There is a big pack in Underground Gamers for the FM Towns (like 74GB). Then there is another big pack in Nyaa for the PC98 and X68000, Underground Gamers has some rare shit in individual torrents too.

As an open plattform is almost impossible to know how many games there are... but if you wanna look some of them Tokugawa has a lot of screenshots from these games. Also note that you can request games there if you know the title.

not really. It's similiar but basically in the PS1 version the game is just displaying a JPG image of an animation cel. The PC98 version is actually drawing the stuff with godtier pixel art. I would still wholeheartedly recommend playing the game though, the presentation is still very very impressive on PS1(and has anime cutscenes). But I'm kind of biased, I love the game.

It's based around DDR clone of Z80 and sports up to 256KB of RAM. It's dedicated CP/M workstation with green-on-black display and great keyboard. Two 5.25" drives and optional 8" drive, modem and printer. Basic models had text-only display since it was meant as office computer but even then it has some cool games like Frogger and Ladder (Lode Runner clone). You probably can't get one outside of Europe but in Germany and former East Block countries those were so common that you could easily pick one up with tons of extras for 100EUR.

Good hunt, that particular model is Robotron 1715. There were several variants differing in amount of RAM but that's it. For basic graphics support you need ROM expansion but it's only used by some CAD software so it's probably not worth it. All games are ASCII only and since it's CP/M almost no software uses graphics. Has great keyboard so if you get WordStar and printer it's still a decent typewriter.

Yeah, but the complications would arrive from the computer reading it having to have sufficient power to interpret and convert that analog data into digital while playing I'd think. Easy with simple playback, much harder with complex algorithms. That's probably why great looking but as simple as pong in gameplay games were the norm with the format, but I'm far from knowledgeable on the subject.
Could also just have been a precursor to that horrible FMV boom in the mid 90s where "hip" and "down with it" publishers all but forced developers to make shitty interactive movies instead of actual games, but I actually prefer what the Laserdisk era produced to much of that.

Keyword: later. Those developments take time. It really wasn't that long after the laserdisc that the first CD systems started coming along. A large part of it could've been the manufacturing cost as well - laserdiscs weren't cheap and would never had caught on for mainstream gaming purposes. At least when they were just video they could cut a lot of costs by using existing laserdisc video burning and reading equipment.

Yeah, it was also the question of the hardware catching up to it I think. The technology to do similar things with the Laserdisc as it was later able to do with the CD simply didn't exist in the 80s.
But as to FMV gaming, that actually predates the Laserdisc. Pic related, an arcade game from the early 70s that used 16mm film and featured Dragon's Lair type gameplay, albeit with a break and a steering wheel.

The PC remakes are translated (At least the first and second game). They are pretty boring but it's worth a try if you're interested.

from a document I used to set up Anex86 for Policenauts(which is also a CD game):

>- Also download the CD-plugins anecdxnt.zip (for WinNT/2000/XP) or anecdx9x.zip (for Win9x)

>- Extract the rars to a place on your harddisk. You should now have several floppydisk images and 1 harddisk image and a directory with the CD image.
>- Mount the CD image with your Virtual CD software.

>Extract 'anex86e1.zip' and the CD-plugin zip to a directory on your harddisk.
>- Go to tab 'CDX' and select the (virtual) CD drive which contains the Policenauts CD.

So, I'm in the process of collecting the Japanese versions of the Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest 1 and 2 were released for MSX computers, and I don't know a damn thing about them other than a lot of companies made computers under the MSX standard. I'm looking to find out if anyone could point me in the right direction, or help me understand what exactly I would look for if I wanted to buy a MSX computer that would be compatible with these games...even though I will probably play them only for a short time...if they even still work/I can hook them up.
