If you don't understand Japanese I'd recommend to get that out of the way first. The few translated ones are largely crap and even with the decent ones you have to deal with poor translations or inferior versions.
Yu-no is probably the best option since the translation comes with a patch to create the definite version by combining aspects from the PC98 and Saturn on an otherwise poor Windows port.

Don't fall for the temptation of playing games without reading the text either.

He just wants to have fun anon. Visual novels are a shitty medium made to compensate for an inherent lack of resources, there is only one answer to questions like "Why not make it animated? Why not write a book if it's about the writing? Why not make it truly interactive or program some sort of gameplay if you're gonna make it a game?"

The answer is a lack of talent. Not that there's no talent, there just isn't -enough- talent to make it what it really should be.

The best way I could excuse what a visual novel is is to make it in the style of a manga that draws the next panels based on your choices, because at least then the frames would actually have to be drawn and make some fucking sense in terms of flow and pacing. Even then though, that would require an artist with actual talent and instinct rather than just get a fucking character designer and call it a day.

While I understand it's probably a 'can't go back now" deal once you know the language, translation accuracy doesn't seem like it would be a big deal in an old eroge. For something like YU-NO a bad translation would completely butcher the whole game but for your random waifu simulators decent English and distinct girl personalities is about all you need to cover.

If there's one thing in my eye that's a sign for lack of talent it's ero quizzes.
With adventures you need at least some competent writing and strip card game/RPS/etc need some AI but with a quiz you can just cram some trivia into conditional branching, add CG and call it a day.

They're also extremely difficult to clear without cheating since you're not just dealing with Japanese text but also Japanese trivia from 25 years ago.

I agree to such a degree that I own two copies of this game just to have an unopened one. I still have to agree that I think that in terms of game design they are kinda lazy and playing them in 2016 is frustrating as hell. They make a nice time capsule of stuff everyone will have forgotten in another 30 years.

You're not gonna like what I have to say but I usually put eroge and visual novels under the same category.

These things masquerade as video games. Video games and what I described are both colossal wastes of time but there are much much easier ways to get off.

Kichikuou Rance is a good strategy game with a massive cast, decent art, and great music.

Difficulty is pretty damn high, it's a step above Sengoku Rance and that game was quite difficult in its own right.
