Which version was better?

>> No.3317862

The MSX game? I don't know man, it's more like it's own thing.

Castlevania because it didn't require you to get through the entire thing with only three lives.

what's the score for in Castlevania? From what I can tell the game doesn't keep high scores

Gotta have a score in games, what are you gonna aim for after you've beaten the game several times?

Gotta agree with the other anons, that's pretty fucking bad. It feels like they sat down and played the game, then tried to re-create it. The amiga was capable of far better than that, dunno why that port was so shitty.

I gotta say, I prefer Castlevania to Vampire Killer. VK is cool and all, but the bosses seem easier while the levels themselves are full of bullshit. It's neat being able to explore, it's not really enjoyable to whip every wall looking for the hidden key to get on to the next level.

You can use the Game Master cartridge for infinite continues and stage select, but even with that the MSX Dracula is just not that good of a game. It feels like the designers knew they were never going to match the Famicom version, so they threw in everything they could into the MSX version to see what stuck.

The game is literally impossible to play without a manual or reference guide, since a lot of power-ups have obtuse input (like the holy water and time freeze) method or passive effects that are hard to figure out on your own. How am I supposed to know that the black bible raises merchant's prices if I didn't know that first hand? The flip screen also don't lent itself well for intense action either.

The only good thing about the MSX Dracula is that some of its unique ideas were put to better use by Castlevania II.

>>3318352
This. You get your first extra life at 30,000 point and additional extends for every 50,000 point until you reach the score cap (which is easy to do during the Dracula boss fight).

>In English a term of contempt (1750s) before its use as a general term for "native of New England" (1765); during the American Revolution it became a disparaging British word for all American native or inhabitants. Shortened form Yank in reference to "an American" first recorded 1778.

Someone fill me in on Vampire Hunter? More screenshots would be awesome too.

Vampire Killer was an MSX game developed alongside the original Castlevania that came out a few months later. It had the same basic story and a lot of the same art assets but the stages were Metroid-esque mazes where you hunted down keys and items to reach the next area.

Also despite the phrase "Metroid-esque" the two games were in development at the same time and came out within months of each other.

I thought it was just a different name for essentially the same game.

But I was wrong I guess. Sounds really interesting. Was it any good? I guess I'll watch this thread to see what people say.

One day i hope I can achieve this level of programming mastery.

I am glad that the game had the courtesy to inform me the player, multiple times, 12 stages in, that yes, I am in a castle.

>> No.3319682

>>3319639
This is misleading, in Japan they had the same name so the game was supposed to be the same. Any design changes in the MSX were not due to them being different games, but just trying different approaches.

Like seriously, who the hell thought pressing left/right while jump was a good idea for an input method for throwing holy water?
