I'm looking to get a good monitor for retro gaming, I've heard there is this insane Sony one that's really expensive. Any cheaper alternatives that don't seem to be the size of toasters?

>> No.3319592

That's a PVM you're talking about, it's a professional monitor. You can get them for like $50 if you look around.

Otherwise just get the standard Trinitron or something like a JVC, Panasonic or Mitsubishi, etc.

>>3319592
So when I start searching for this you mean a Mitsubishi rgb? or something like that?

>> No.3319606

>>3319596
Pretty much. Just look for monitors from reputable brands. I've heard good things about JVC and Mitsubishi's PVMs if you can't find a Sony.

Toot toot...anti-PVM train rolling through. Friendly reminder that retro games were meant to be played on retro consumer grade sets and you can find them for $0-$50 easily...toot toot

>the size of toasters?
you wish a decent crt was as small as a toaster

>>3319608
This is a nine inch monitor. Repeat, nine inches. Smaller than an ipad screen. Keep that in mind.

If you don't want to spend much money just hit up craigslist and get a name brand TV that's the size you want with composite and S-video inputs. Maybe component too if you want to have the option of using like a Wii for retro emulation or spending a fair amount on cabling for legit consoles. Learn to access and use the service menu on your set.

We have an ongoing thread on this topic you know.

This is correct. I got a low-end PVM for free, but I'm going back to a consumer set when it breaks.

No one in the CRT general will give people using consumer sets the time of day and you know it.

I bought a mid-range PVM for 50 bucks shipped and I'd literally never touch a consumer set again.

I'm guessing you're using something that's total garbage like a 9".

>> No.3320374

>>3320230
That's not true at all. In fact, investing in RGB SCART cables and a decent SCART to YUV transcoder with breakout then just feeding that to consumer Trinitrons (or whatever your taste) with good grasp of service menu settings is a totally acceptable option.

OP, I'd suggest doing some research. There is a thread on the shmups forum that might give you some insight as well as YouTube videos. Try not to fall into "people talk about this therefore I want it no matter the cost" trap. Make sure you know of alternatives and make sure buying one will really benefit you.

You'd be wrong, and an asshole. It's a 14" SONY PVM, I got it for free from a television station and it's an absolutely reasonable set. It's more mid-range than low, I exaggerated, but it's no BVM. I've used consumer sets for years, and now after having both, the potential cost, upkeep, and relative scarcity aren't really worth it in my opinion. I'll ride this thing out, and I'm even trying to get it refurbished so I can continue using it for years, but if it dies, it dies. I do have a garbage 10" Panasonic monitor for backup, but it is a huge step down, I've had better consumer sets.

>>3320273
I agree completely; I'm largely refering to people like >>3320273 who think they're CRT savants. PVMs/BVMs are a novelty and status symbol to them, whereas to me and presumably people like you, they are simply excellent tools for playing retro games.

I've had "decent" non-PVM sets before, they're dogshit in comparison to my 20" ex-medical display.

When I think about the price difference if you aren't the kind of retard who spends 200 bucks on a 9" on eBay, I really can't fathom ever owning a consumer set. You just wait a while for a decent PVM to come along, instead of settling for a free consumer TV that belongs in a trash heap.

The only exception is if you want a HD CRT for Xbox or the couple of PS2 games that supported progressive.

PVMs aren't a novelty or some spergy status symbol, they're just the best way to play retro games, and you can pick them up for prices that are lower than dirt.

getting a 36" CRT tv with composite or s-video will be fine for retro gaming. CRT sets get old though. Its not a good investment.

Just track down a cheap PVM and be happy. They're worth it. I have a 14-inch pic related with four port s-video switch box for all my console needs. NTSC and PAL.

What a fucking sperg. His meaningless quest for the best picture drives up the price for the rest of us who actually want to fucking play the games instead of spending 2 minutes jerking off to scanlines and then discarding the monitor because it takes up too much space in his minimalist room.

It's the same level of retarded that leads to retro games being sold for retarded prices by scalpers, while their JP counterparts that sold half as many copies still retail for sane money.

you used to be able to get them for 50 bucks but now that hipster retro gamers know about them they're over $100. The best ones (ive only seen 1 in person and i understand why its worth it now) are $200+

i know a guy that has like 8 of these things, he got them years ago before the hype train came rolling in and snatched them all up. He even has one modded for s-video and rgb I think. I never understood the hype because Im not too picky about my retro gaming, but when I played on one I could see what the fuss was all about.
