Pretty sure there's still arcades in major cities. I don't know about the diversity of their games though, I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are focused on Street Fighter V with a House of The Dead cab in the corner.

Plus there's always barcades, if that's your thing.

Last night. And people still get together in person. I would take a lan party over arcades any day, and that's coming from an oldfag. I always liked the games but never the atmosphere of arcades though. Noisy, cramped, often having to wait to play what you want. And the business model of shilling out every time you play sucks. All the normie vermin stayed in their seats playing on their touch devices so I had the arcade all to myself.

It was great playing 1941 in a quiet dark room undisturbed by noisy crowds or sound from other machines.

>When was the last time you had a warm body next to you when playing a multiplayer game?
This is asking for a bunch of shitty "lel muh gaymer gf" replies. It wasn't so much "warm bodies" as it was having a location that stocked new games most people couldn't afford. So you went there with some friends, or alone, and had some fun, though the social aspect was always secondary to the awesome games.

Obviously the convenience of being able to play everything at home, buying games online without having to set foot in a shithole etc. is great, but the irony is there are no good games to buy nowadays. When arcades were around arcade developers HAD to make the games good because they were sinking huge amounts of money into big cabinets and distribution/promotion and people would fuck off after 1 play if it wasn't any good. Nowadays people pre-order garbage and there are no distribution costs so devs have gotten lazy and corrupt. Why wouldn't they, given their audience are fucking retards sitting on a couch with a credit card.

See, it's not the same anymore because most of them are "barcades" full of hipsters there for the wrong reasons, not to mention arcade development itself has stagnated so there aren't really any must-play games people flock to that aren't available in some form on a console. The first thing that jumped out at me was HOTD2 which is from the 90s. And pinball machines are ok but mostly for fucking around when you're bored at a bar. That's why these pics are always empty and most places are shutting down unless they do the barcade thing in which case they're making money off alcohol with old cabs sitting around as little more than interior decoration accent pieces.

I went to a local arcade not too long ago. It was alright, but iirc some of their monitors definitely needed attention. They had food and drinks I believe, but I don't know if it was really a barcade.

Generally speaking, if you are going to run an arcade as a business, you should have your monitors properly color/brightness adjusted and looking as close to new as possible. If the monitor is worn and incapable of being properly tweaked, either repair it or replace it. People don't want to go to an arcade and have to look at some bargain bin shit that you just bought off craigslist or at an amusement auction and immediately put up on the show floor without any cleaning or other necessary attention.

Also, the idea of a barcade just seems like it would inherently attract hipsters. Having an emphasized bar aspect seems like it would drive away what I consider to be the primary arcade demographic (kids and nerds) and attract those who want to drink some craft beer while idly chatting about how much they love some obscure arcade game that they've put maybe 3 credits into.

The only thing is kids and nerds are already gaming at home on tablets/mobile/PC/consoles so the only thing that could lure them back would be experiences not available on those platforms. The VR thing might work, but then again there are no fucking games for it. Considering the fact that even the home market is slowing down it might be curtains for video games in general, not just arcades. I'm just happy I got to live in a time when they were extremely popular and constantly innovating and expanding.

Arcades certainly had more of a mystique back then, with graphics that generally exceeded what you'd find on home consoles. To offer a unique experience nowadays you need to go for full-on 4Dish immersion type stuff or redemption/kiddie gambling crap.

That it does. I'm 34 years old and I go to a Barcade in Columbus Ohio called 16 bit bar. Most of the people there weren't even born when arcades were actually a viable business model.

You do have a couple of cool old guys though. 50 somethings who were playing in arcades when games like Robotron and Vector graphics were the new hot thing. Those dudes can give you a slice of history if you're free with a drink and some time.

Your opinion on the arcade business model may vary, but what I feel has damaged video games was the fact arcades were no longer relevant. Dreamcast is the very last console to be designed to deliver an arcade experience at home, while everything after it was designed to be more like a computer than anything else. Hell, the other 6th gen consoles literally used computer parts (CPUs by IBM and Intel, GPUs by nVidia and ATi), and from that moment forward all consoles were mini-PCs.

Another important factor arcades supplied was technical boundaries being pushed, and encouraging console makers to find ways to replicate it. However, technical boundaries don't get pushed at all unless they're funded specifically by Sony or MS, and PC has nothing to show off its technical superiority like it did in the 90s.

>go on vacation to same beach with my family every year
>place has 4 arcades along the boardwalk
>used to all be top tier with classics from the 80s and 90s
>now all of them have nothing but games where you win tickets

It hurts.

same thing happened last week with my family
it's just a little mini golf / gokart / arcade place but I used to want to go there just to play Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and play as Dan the man Hibiki and constantly taunt

now it's just ticket machines and one of those stackers

fun fact the grand prize on the stacker now are fucking fishing reels. i shit you not.

Pic related is 15 minutes from my house. There's no bar, and it's a little expensive (pay by the hour), but I love it. Mostly because the games are in excellent condition, and the owner is very friendly and knowledgeable. They also have 7 pinball machines not seen in the picture.

It was just before closing on a weekday night. I wanted to show the games, not a bunch of people. There were about 20 people in earlier that night, and they are packed on weekends.

Is it true that most arcade cabinets only had mono audio?

This would make sense considering that cabs had to be narrow to fit many inside a room so you wouldn't get much stereo separation. Also, arcades were filled with all kinds of noise so you wouldn't be able to appreciate the directionality of the sound anyway.
