What are your thoughts on map aesthetic detailing, /doom/?

I find as long as a map has decent texture use, varied lighting, and a layout that isn't simply a bunch of random shapes, its good enough. So I'm generally accepting of 90's era visuals, outside of bottom of the barrel stuff in D!Zone.

It is quite a treat when maps are of the Darkening E2/Scythe 2/Suspended in Dusk/Back to Saturn X style of detailing, though. It looks great, while still feeling like it fits with Doom's graphics.

But then theres stuff like Knee Deep in Zdoom, ZDCMP2, Bloody Steel, etc, where I fell they overdo it with the detailing, to the point where it just ends up being a cluttered mess as a result.

Would it be in my benefit to use slade3 to make e maps as well as change the music, or is doombuilder still top dog in the map making world?

GZDoom Builder is perfectly fine for making vanilla maps. I'd actually recommend it over Doom Builder 2, as it still gets updates.

Slade 3's map editor isn't the best. Generally better to use it for adding in lumps and what not.

so turns out that making enemies that gib from close range shotgun blasts is pretty simple and straightforward

an enemy with a gibbing death needs one new state
death.shotgun:
tnt1 a 0 a_jumpifcloser(distance, "xdeath", 0)
goto super::death

and a puff fired by the shotgun just needs the appropriate damagetype
doesn't get in the way of balance like the whole 'solid corpses' and 'shoot a high-damage, short-range invisble attack prior to actual pellets'

Not really what I mean.

I want more source ports that do the original resolution 320x200 (or double it, 640x400), stretched into 4:3, and then scaled 2-4x, so it keeps the pixely look all crisp on higher native screen resolutions.

PrBoom+ has a screen multiplier, but I have to use 4:3 pixel resolutions to have 4:3, as the engine will not stretch the original resolutions which are 16:10 pixel resolutions into 4:3, not even an option., Unfortunately with 4:3 pixel resolutions, the graphics look more noticeably distorted the smaller the resolution (320x240 looks completely fucked).

I have noticed people didn't like how long the last pastebin was so I have created a new EZESTQUAKEPASTA for Quake's 20th birthday. First of all, as of right now, it only focuses on getting the game up and running with singleplayer, online, and modding. There are no mentions for config or mapping for example. I also put all the files for the respective games into one download to make getting set up even less work for the uninitiated. That said, I also added Quake 2 and Quake 3 downloads with addons, music, ingame movies, and links to my favorite sourceports for each. Appended at the end of this new paste is the last QUAKEPASTA for those who want more information which I will try and rework to include information for Quake 2 and 3 so it can be removed from the OP and replaced with this.

that means scroton's disgusting piece of work for shoot'n'boot is no longer necessary for samsara

it also means the SO's dual weapons can be done so much more easily, hell, maybe even the M1 alien weapon (have one overlay state running counters and firing, the main one running animations)

hell, ranger's thunderbolt could loop properly as well - have one overlay layer play the thunderbolt sound every 18 tics while the fire key's held down, and it won't have to cut off when you let go of the trigger (that's bugged me ever since I made the thing, I'm serious)

and A_OverlayOffset means you could actually move the layers around independently, something A_GunFlash couldn't do

this isn't even going into *other* mods.

zdoom *needed* this.

It's not that I don't like Quake, it just hasn't really resonated for me like Doom has. It just feels like Quake is Doom, but with more bullet-spongey enemies that feel more tedious to fight.

Is Quake intended to be "pistol-started" (well, shotgun start) the same way Doom is? That is, was every level designed and playtested with shotgun start? Is there a way to easily play it like that?

Do YOU think he cares about the 8BDM community when he just did this >>3310253 a few hours ago; and also when he wiped clean the entire ban list of cheaters, undesirable individuals and hackers?

Do you think he cares about less than ten guys out of the entire group of users who actively used Best-Ever and genuinely couldn't care LESS of this petty drama?

Do you think he cares more about keeping alive a single Doom mod who have seen better days years ago than getting people on his side and overthrowing "da evil staff" from zandronum?

I'll tell you this, I never thought Best-Ever was gonna go in such a bad note. What usually happens is that the server admin runs out of money to maintain the servers, attempts to get donations to keep the servers alive but fails to do so and ends up shutting them down. From what I read and perceived, this dude is more pissed about dealing with the fact that some people are still around in the community and "don't do their jobs" more than wasting 3000 dollars in BE. In the first post he flat out told people to move on to another server host (TSPG). He doesn't care. He's been blinded by his grief.

I ran a couple of servers in BE, nothing out of the ordinary stuff. And of course /vr/ had a long history of using their service to host servers to play. And not just servers, mods as well.

You have a point and it's definitely a petty thing but I don't think it's exactly as black and white as you make it out to be. He is not the only one who tried to get these players banned, apparently it has been a problem for years and nobody has done anything about it. Seems like he stayed out of it for the most part and just recently got sucked back in.

At least the servers are back though, I don't really care about all of this drama but I'm glad that he didn't choose to take down the servers.

Question for map editors:

I know how to make a 3d floor (eg: bridge with water under it), but is it possible to do this with gravity?

Eg: Bridge with 1 gravity on top, and 0.5 gravity under it?

Doesn't seem to work the way a 3d sector does, sadly.

>Is it a message by the id employee who made it, or a hint at how Doomguy got his job?
Here's the down low: that skin, like most of the skins in Quake 3, was made by Ken Scott, an excellent texture artist who worked there at the time. The "nepotism" message is in reference to Paul Steed, a now-deceased modeler and artist who also worked at id Software back then. Paul was a... let's say "serviceable" artist though not an outstanding one, but he also had an incredibly toxic personality that made him nearly universally loathed among id Software employees. His one strong supporter within the company was, oddly, John Carmack, who appreciated Paul Steed's work ethic, and Steed was smart enough to not antagonize JC (not to mention that the two didn't really have much reason to do a lot of personal interaction).

So basically, the "nepotism" message in that skin is a passive-aggressive jab by Ken Scott towards Paul Steed. It doesn't strictly make sense because nepotism, by definition, only involves family members, but Ken Scott was an artist, not a writer, and was using the looser and more colloquial definition where "nepotism" basically meant "keeping one's job due to favoritism from the higher-ups".

Not long afterwards, the other id owners fired Paul Steed anyway, despite JC's objection, and that saga in id's history finally drew to a close.

To be more specific, set gravity higher in the sector that the slope or stairs are in, then have a jumping script.

The jumping script should be an enter script that continually loops and checks with getplayerinput to begin the second part of the script on the first tic the player presses the jump button. The second part of the script should loop every tic, and in the loop it gets the sector gravity and then sets the player gravity to a value which when multiplied by the sector gravity equals 1.0 (eg sector gravity is 4.0 so player gravity is 0.25), and checks if the player is still in the air and if so continues looping. When it exits the loop it sets the player gravity back to 1.0 and returns to the outer loop to check if the player has pressed jump.

The constant looping during the scond part is so that if the player changes sectors during the jump things don't get wonky. The check for height relative to sector rather than a set amount of time is in case the player jumps off something or onto a higher

I can already see an issue with this, see pic

you could instead try to Spawn() something underneath the player and see if it spawns, but there's only two ways you're gonna be able to handle wider/narrower players

1. +NOINTERACTION the player and spawn a copy of the player 1/65536 unit below where he was standing (just do "- 1" instead of "- 1.0")

2. spawn a *fuckton* of Radius 16, Radius 8, Radius 4, Radius 2, Radius 1, etc actors to fill in the area underneath the player. don't recommend this at all.

both of those can still probably be fucked up by being inside a monster, and if you're standing on a monster it'll consider him a stairstep this way

it's gonna be really annoying to get this working no matter what

I'd say something like a stalking doppelganger SA-X kind of thing would work the best.
After having it's armor destroyed it would have the horrifying demonic monstrosity underneath.
I imagine it as an amalgamation, LEGION kind of thing.
Maybe the reformed souls of all the slaughtered demons.
Having the head of the Icon Of Sin.

Actually I'd love to see that too.
A full sized Icon Of Sin with it's own behemoth metal clad body.

I don't see the point in going for 100% items. It counts health potions and armor helmets, so in some maps you end up having to pick up hundreds of them, which is tedious, especially considering it can be easy to miss them. And thats not even going over the fact that you'll have to collect them, even if you have 200% health and armour, making it feel wasteful.

Honestly, its no wonder speedrunners generally agreed to not have it required in Max runs.

Sorry for the late reply, was sleeping.

I agree the first method is probably better, and both would be prone to issues regardless. However I think it would possibly be acceptable in this case because when it fails, the outcome is that the script stays in the inner loop and the player has normal gravity, which isn't a game-breaking bug, but only disables the stair effect. Also using your method for loop end detection, the only cases in which the script would produce undesirable results would be if the player were standing on an actor on the stair sector, and even then that wouldn't be undesirable behavior since you would want them to have normal gravity in that instance, so that they would fall normally when they walked off the actor.

Also couldn't you use z velocity to determine if the player was standing on something and no longer falling? You would have to use that in conjunction with other detection methods because that would definitely end the script too early if they're standing on an actor. Maybe shoot a projectile with the same radius as the player directly downwards and see what it hits first?

>>3312017
>That would be problematic on steps with ledges above them, so that would need a work around, too.
Since you have to make new maps for this method, just don't put ledges above your stairs? 3D floors that don't have ledge over stairs would be fine though.

Maybe instead of sector gravity, have sector script that sets player gravity to a higher amount if they're in the sector and within x distance of the floor? UDMF supports custom sector properties, you could have a script that runs on the player instead of the sector that checks when they've entered a sector with the stairs property and apply gravity as mentioned above, in conjunction with jump script.

You are going to have a tough time with that because reading map geometry through decorate and acs is a bitch.
For instance, if there's a small drop after a ledge that the player needs to cross, the small drop will get read as a stair and then the player falls too fast when they run off the ledge.
The issue is that on top of reading map geometry, you also have to guess at author intent, and there will always be cases that will fuck everything up. While this only working on maps made for it is a huge limitation, it completely sidesteps both those issues.

not really, because of flying, no-gravity areas, and weird circumstances that'd have your trajectory flatten out for more than a single tic

3D floors wouldn't actually be an issue I don't think, because GetActorCeiling/FloorZ adjust their results based on the lowest ceiling above you and the highest floor below you

Well in the case of flying and no gravity areas it shouldn't affect anything for this purpose, since flying disregards gravity iirc and sector gravity of 0 multiplied by anything would still be 0. And the map for these stairs isn't any existing map, but one with the effect in mind. If the script running off the player and setting actor gravity based on sector properties was used, the failure for it in both cases would only result in the player having actor gravity of 1.0, which shouldn't be an issue.

Ideally you'd use it as one part of detection, not rely on it by itself.

In the instances of trajectory flattening out for more than a tic (I assume at the apex of arcs and if the player is sliding across ceilings after being thrust) could checking the distance to floor fix it? It would have the same issue as the the ledges, but in those cases you'd want them to have the normal gravity.

I think the script running off the player and checking if they're in a sector with the correct sector property and within a certain distance of the floor before doing anything would solve most of the issues, as it would mean that for most of the cases where it would otherwise break, it wouldn't have changed anything to begin with, so not changing the "no change" wouldn't break anything.

Also can't you check for flight powerups?

I hate to give the generic answer, but "When I'm done" is really the only thing I can say.
I'm assembling it now, and it's surprisingly tedious, but it's much faster than DUMP 2's so it shouldn't be too much longer.

>>3312550 is right, it's fucking mammoth.
The maps will probably be done first, and I'll post it here so everyone can fiddle around. HOORAY FOR OBVIOUS FAVORITISM
Then come the weapons, which I'll post here next, and then I'll post both at the same time on the ZDoom/Doomworld forums.

Because when speedrunning handedness changes a lot. You have to use left/right/middle to successfully pull of some shots and jumps to save time.

But then the player is still dropping faster than normal off certain ledges, and if the map needs them to cross a gap with such a ledge where the ceiling is low enough to get in the way of jumping, they're stuck.

Well damn I don't know. Actually what I'm working on has Unreal-style dodging that would be useful if this exact scenario came up... but with normal Doomguy movement I have no idea at that point, I think jumping into a low ceiling makes you fall faster than if you ran off the ledge, right?.

Doesn't it apply friction while on contact with ceiling though?

Either way there's still the case of ceilings being placed that the player hits the upper wall when trying to jump across, stopping them entirely.

If you think the ssg is op you dont play difficult enough maps.

Most people seem so picky about their weapon preference they never relax and wing it on a pistol start. You will begin to learn every weapon has its situation and more importantly, what the map calls for.

>> No.3313021

Lemme add that my point for the first part and my earlier post were not that hitting a ceiling makes you fall faster, but that it lowers your horizontal speed meaning the horizontal distance traveled before you fall is decreased.

Ah. Well then there's still the case mentioned in >>3313018 and the fact that the player running off of ledges would fall one speed off of most ledges and another off of some ledges.

IMO doing this in a project with maps designed for it (or modified for it) would be pretty easy and bug-free but doing it for all maps is going to be a headache and present issues that can not be mitigated.

Thief 1-3 are on sale on Steam right now, but I only have $4 in my steam wallet so I can only afford the first two

Also for future reference, is player positive z velocity preserved when hitting a ceiling or is it set to zero? This isn't applicable for this scenario but I am curious for comparison to unfettered jump distance.

No fucking kidding, Colorful Hell is the most absurd example of it I've experienced so far and boy it shows.

DoomRLA, probably the only real other mod I've played with randomizing as a core element, has some bullshit with item distribution and its monster addon's variants can be nasty, but most of the time it's pretty reasonable. Colorful Hell on the other hand makes almost all the enemies on the map overpowered in some form with no worthwhile reward, and the only way I can see anybody enjoying this mod would be with an overpowered weapons pack like Combined Arms or something. It's masochism otherwise.

The concept is fine but the powerlevel by vanilla standards is just bonkers, the author might as well throw sic a Doom-ified Rajang at you while he's at it. And why doesn't something like this have a script that controls the randomization depending on how the player is doing overall?

on the *other* hand, BE was invaluable to those who simply wanted to test their shit online quickly

there's quite a few situations where you simply can't host, all of them involving not having administrative access to the router/modem you're connected to, and for those (and for those too lazy to mess with ports and shit) there was BE

I still think this is just to keep the drama train rolling.

>>3313292
Sort of this

Basic weapons like the chaingun are stuck with reloading and you may only carry six weapons, but even basic assemblies are generally quite powerful and serviceable to deal with the monsters introduced. What you can make is going to depend on the mapset and how long it goes for, as well as making whatever compliments your class.

Worst-case scenario, Samsara? Since everyone is rebalanced around Doom 2.
