Stardust Speedway is the only song in the whole game I like. I especially like the Bad Future music on the US version.
I've just never really cared for that style of music in games, but I can understand why so many people like it.

I grew up with the US soundtrack and loved it. It wasn't until I got into emulation that I discovered the JP soundtracks and I think I'm kinda partial to that one now. It just fits the colorful theme of the game a lot more than that US soundtrack.

The difference of the OSTs for this game really show how differently both countries viewed and portrayed the characters and the franchise.

The boss theme in particular makes it really blatant.

The US boss theme is actually a nicesong, but it just doesn't fit for a Sonic game. Most other songs are really boring and make the game seem really dead, whereas the JP soundtrack is really intense and upbeat all the time.

It was changed because SEGA of America just built a new music studio and they needed something to do, but the more popular explanation is that they thought it sounded too "European" for American audiences which I believe is total bullshit.
I like Spencer Nilsen's tunes but his Sonic CD stuff would have fitted better for something like Ecco the Dolphin, just listen to the boss music for example.

The JP soundtrack is better as a collected product since the US one didn't bother to change the Past music, though personally I think a few of the zone tracks in the US version blow the JP version out of the water.
