I'll play anything. I don't care about pong consoles or anything though. Modern stuff is very very hit and miss but I enjoy some of it.

On proper consoles, SMB/Zelda/Castlevania the same day.
> minimal generation you are willing to go
8 Bit on console, but I like Apple II text adventures.
> social standing then and now: did you have a lot of/any friends, gfs, etc
Some friends IRL, some friends online. All of them have liked videogames since back in the day.
> favorite platformer
Not much of a fan now, for pure platformers for the sake of platforming, probably Super Mario World.
> favorite rpg
It's my favorite genre (almost exclusively japanese ones) and I love so many of them to bits that it's very tough to pick one. I can play even the shitty ones no problem. To name a few I really like, the original SaGa/FFL, the first Lufia, and Parasite Eve, most FF games.
I've also been playing an italian MUD for over 15 years, so I guess there's that.
> favorite action/adventure
For retro, it's a split between Seiken DensetsuFFA/MQ, A Link to the Past, and Illusion of Gaia. To be quite honest, tho, I love A Link Between Worlds as much as I love A Link to the Past, if not more.
> favorite racing
I don't really like racing games, so it's a split between original Super Mario Kart, original F-Zero, and the first Gran Turismo, which are the only ones I actually enjoyed playing.

It's ok. It has more games being discussed that I care about than /v/ and while retro gaming as a hobby is plagued with people who only care about Nintendo, most people here seem to have broad tastes. We do suffer from having the same threads over and over but I am not creative enough to help fix that, and I suppose repetition is to be expected in this kind of situation.

One of those dedicated Pong machines that played Pong and only Pong. After that, the family got an NES.

>minimal generation you are willing to go
Second.generation, at least for the arcade scene. Didn't care for early home consoles like the 2600, but the arcades had some of the most breakthrough classics, like Millipede, Frogger and Gauntlet. I still emulate a lot of these games.

>social standing
I didn't have that many friends growing up. Seems a lot of other guys at the time were more into sports, fighting, FPS and racing. I can occasionally get into FPS and racing, but I can't invest enough time and attention into these games to keep up with my friends.

As for dating, had a few boyfriends over the years, although nothing too serious. Kind of hard to date when you're stuck in a community with a small-town mentality. I don't think any of the guys I've dated were into gaming at all.

>favorite platformer
Either Yoshi's Island or Spyro 2. It would be hard to pick one over the other.

>favorite RPG
Good question, because RPGs encompass most of my library. If compilations are acceptable, then I'll say Final Fantasy Origins. FF1 has so much replayability with its different challenges and class combinations, and I think I'm one of the few guys who actually enjoyed FF2.

Non-retro: Fallout New Vegas

>favorite action / adventure
I'll say Tomb Raider II. When it first came out, it was (mechanically) such a vast improvement over the first game, and it seemed like the level design was balanced specifically for veterans of TR1.

>favorite racing
Ridge Racer Type-4. R4 was a graphical feat at the time, because most PS1 racers were low-poly and were plagued by issues like "pop-up" environments, whereas R4 was basically a proto-PS2 game.

I've also heard good things about Vanishing Point.

I've been coming here since /vr/ first started and it's been pretty consistent. I've discovered a lot of great stuff from threads on here. The discussion is (by nature) kind of redundant, but it's kind of entertaining how that causes a common opinion to gradually reduce to a parody of itself and then finally to a meme no one really pays attention to anymore.

I wouldn't be opposed to gradually extending the retro cutoff, if only for the sake of discussion.

I'm really bad at strategy games usually, which is a shame, because I love a lot of them, Starcraft is a dear part of my childhood, but I could never fucking play it without cheats, likewise for Warcraft 2, huge scrub on RTS, I can just barely scrape by in Age Of Empires 2 legit, and that's because AOE2 has a babby difficulty setting.

I'm a little better at turn based strategy, I can do pretty alright in Shining Force, and you could argue that there's some strategy to Heroes 3, I'm not TOO shabby at that, but games like Advance Wars, it's hopeless after a certain point, the CPU just always wipes the floor with me on certain missions, no matter what.

I think I'm just naturally suited better for FPS and third person action.

A lot of my guy friends play a lot of what's better that year between Fifa and PES, but I'm utter shit at it and strategizing. They actually seem pretty good games in general, and from what I gather, there are modes that are, both online and offline, basically RPGs where your battles are the soccer games. They seem pretty entertaining and deep games, but for me, trying to play them is like trying to play, say, Dwarf Fortress blind.

Also I kinda enjoy FPSs but I'm utterly shit at them in most modes or roles, mainly because I suck at aiming. The only one where I actually felt I could be competitive with anyone was Goldeneye, I could snipe people from across maps with the grenade launcher in that game.

Sports games other than NES ones and NBA Jam. While I fucking love me some Double Dribble, Nintendo Ice Hockey and Super Volleyball and Tecmobowl, I've never liked a single sports game released for any other console ever.
When my family moved to the US in the 90s, lots of guys my age were into sports games and I felt out of place during conversations and playing games at friends houses, doubly so for being the foreigner AND not into sports games.

I don't like the trolls and people who argue with one another ad infinitum because one of them doesn't like thing. I mean... I legitimately detest FF7 and have since it was first released. But I don't go into FF7 threads to tell people I don't like it, especially since I don't have any reason for my distaste for it in particular ("I just don't" is the best explanation I can give). That sews discord unnecessarily.
Other than nerdrage over the silliest minutia, /vr/'s fine.

I've tried finding a download for the nipnong-language MD remake, but can't due to searching "phantasy star" and "mega drive" turns up only ps2, ps3 and ps4 rather than the remake.

Haven't you read the global rules? 4chan is an 18+ site. Merely announcing that you're underage (on any board) results in a permanent ban.

Just because we have blue boards doesn't mean those boards are open to underage audiences. The boards are marked for worksafe and non-worksafe content. But a lot of good that does since there are shitty hentai ads everywhere.

You have some pretty good taste for your age, like things that were already old when you were a kid, do you have older siblings who would show you the cool stuff they liked?

Like, I'm 24, but my brother would just show me cool old movies he had, Army Of Darkness, Terminator, Halloween, The Thing, etc, things that were old and wouldn't be shown on TV around here, things that I probably was sometimes too young to see

See, freedom is about doing what you want to do in life, but at the same time, freedom also hinges on you not being a victim or making others victims, you don't have the freedom to take away someone's freedom, because otherwise you're not free.

There can be some great discussions on here, certainly more than /v/, but overall people have gotten a lot more confrontational on here over opinions after the past few years, much like most of the boards. That, and people get baited far too easily. There's no need to respond to obvious trolls, its what they want you to do, but so many topics get ruined by people not understanding this.

It was amazing when it started out, and when the Dreamcast was allowed to be retro, it helped to make this board a bit more broader and less shitposting about "b-b-b-but it's not retro". I frequented it in 2014 and occasionally in 2015 These days when I do come back to browse, it feels like there is a lot more shitposting and I'm assuming /v/ has leaked in because they're tired of shitposting on /v/ and want something new to try related to video games.

It's still a great board.

Honestly, /vr/ has never been that great. There's either too little or too much moderation, so you have your choice of being banned for arbitrary reasons, or having to wade through shitposting to find any serious discussion. I'm one of the more regular posters on this board who tries to push on-topic discussions as much as possible, but even I've been banned as a result of the retarded over-moderation we had just months ago. There were a few times I gave up on the board.and moved on to other things. I rarely bother to post here anymore.

Well, >>3293507 here, I do genuinely think SMB2 USA is a good game, I think it's unfairly shat upon sometimes for being retooled from another game (which was designed kind of like a quasi Mario game anyway)

>> No.3317014

>>3315508
Personally I liked it and I think it's a great game, with nothing in particular that stands out as a bad mechanic either, and for sure, I played it to death. I just don't feel it's the one platformer that comes to my mind when I have to think of a favorite. I have to say that having 4 playable characters does make the game pretty fresh to play, the way you tackle levels is often completely different. Also, I like that you can do a lot of stupid shit in it moving around blocks and whatnot.

To be honest, tho, platformer is kind of a weird genre. There's a fine line between platformer, run and gun, and action/adventure and sometimes ARPG or Metroidvania.

For example there's an awful lot of platforming in the original Metroid or Kid Icarus.

>> No.3317108

It is a platformer game, albeit with minor RPG mechanics thrown in.

Metroid is action-adventure though. Action-adventure games usually certainly contain platforming elements, but also have adventure elements like collecting key items (or power-ups) to advance to new areas.

I'll never get why people throw this term around. It tells you nothing of the style of game at all. SMB2US, Magical Chase and 720° all have RPG elements and they're three fantastic games from three completely different genres.

Run-n-gun is just a subtype of platformer, no?
Ya can't be RnG without being a platformer, too.

Think of it like taxonomy: 'platformer' is the order which is then broken down in the 2d and 3d families while 2d is further broken down into single screen or scrolling subfamilies and scrolling broken down even further into the action/adventure, run-n-gun, puzzle platformer etc tribes which might then even be broken down into genus and species (which, for the sake of this analogy, genus would be a particular series or engine and species would be a specific game in that series/running on that engine itself).

I love the more serious threads like the pinball and CRT generals. I get tired of the console wars stupidity. There are decent games on every system. Play the good ones, and leave the crap behind on each console. In an era of flashcarts and emulation, there's no reason to get hung up on any one system.

My favorite games have always been turn based strategy, which you left out. For those, I'm going with HoMM3

I'll play anything, but I won't commit to anything that came before Nintendo Entertainment System, and I haven't bought a 'new' console since my 360 crashed back in 2010.

I made friends easily in elementary school. I had some trouble in middle school, but still had friendships, and that situation played out pretty much the same into high school. Once I got to college I had a few girlfriends and some friends I hung out with every day. My life pretty much barrelled out when I turned 25 though, and I haven't been cool since.

/vr/ is up there, but /lgbt is the easiest. Everyone there is so mad at everyone else that anything you say even if it's not meant to be trolling will be taken that way by at least someone. Makes /pol/ and all it's ragetards look like a hugbox by comparison. Good times if you want to see people fly off the handle at silly shit though. It's pretty dank.

I was unaware he was meant to be a carpenter. That makes sense. Overralls and hammers and all that are carpenter's stuff, not plumbers.

They destroy everything that is good in the world. She likes retro games and is pretty good too, so its win/lose at least. I always have someone to play with, unfortunately that person is a succubus. Everything is cool until you have kids, just don't.

8bit maybe a couple of exceptions into older stuff if they catch my attention somehow.
>social standing then and now: did you have a lot of/any friends, gfs, etc
Then: a couple of friends but none of them were too much into games
Now: most of my friends are into games but we have really different tastes so we don't play together too much. Ex-gf is only into casual shit.

Nice to visit it from time to time, but some people make impossible to have a decent thread about some games/franchises (like Castlevania)
