There are no retro games that have all the qualities of the Souls games but better across the board. However, if you like the Souls games there are numerous retro games to check out

The King's Field and especially the Shadow Tower games have very similar mechanics and atmosphere being the direct ancestors of the Souls games

Severance has very similar graphics and physics plus it actually is a bit more actiony and has better gore

Many action 2D RPGs e.g. Zelda 2, Faxanadu, Ys 3 etc offer very high challenge levels with the same flavor as Souls. Many retro games in general demand much much higher skill levels to complete

The remakes aren't different. OoT was specifically made as a face-lift to the N64 version, keeping every non game breaking glitch.

Majoras Mask is almost the exact same with much needed improvements on top of the face-lift.

The remakes of ocarina is only different in the increased texture/draw distance and being a bit brighter to compensate for the handheld hardware, they play identically and have the exact same geometry and gameplay. It does have a hint system though, but it's completely optional.

The souls games are a hybrid genre. There's nothing wrong with that, but comparing them to an RPG game like Phantasy Star IV or Baldur's Gate is just silly. They're totally different games, only sharing a few traits like character progression and detailed inventories.

Good to see /vr/ only got more retarded since I last dropped in.

It's already been said, but King's Field *is* classic Souls. It's the foundation of the entire Souls series. Albeit, Souls expands on character mechanics, but it's generally the same gameplay style, theme and atmosphere. Except KF didn't suffer from tons of shitty faux early English writing.

KF's graphics are unusually dated, though. Even when the series first came out, there were PS1 games leagues ahead of From's 3D modeling skills. It can take awhile to get used to all the bland textures and square environments.

That said, KF2 (or KF1 in the U.S.) was probably the highlight of the series. KF1 is a simple dungeon crawl, but KF2 steps it up with more vast environments, including outdoor areas that were absent from KF1. KF3 feels like more of an afterthought to KF2. It's a great game in its own regard, but doesn't necessarily improve upon what KF2 already accomplished. I also didn't think the environments were quite as memorable as KF2's.

"Fun" is subjective, but I enjoyed it. If Souls' difficulty didn't put you off, then you shouldn't have any issues with KF, aside from maybe the dated graphics.

I thought KF2's progression and atmosphere were infinitely better than anything I've encountered in Souls, but I'm more biased toward retro games. You have to give the game a fair shake, though. It does take awhile to get beyond some of the first few areas, some of which seem to extend more than they should. It's really not all caves and barracks. There's quite a bit of grinding and backtracking until you get to a comfortable level to start exploring at your own pace. At that point, you get to see more of the diversity present in the game.

I'm playing through King's Field (KF II US) for the first time right now and I'm having tons of fun with it. Going in blind without a walkthrough so I can really discover what the world has to offer. The combat (while slow) is really engaging and fun, especially for an RPG.

They are Action RPGs. Building your character affects the game SIGNIFICANTLY, differences between spellcasters, melee characters, using light or heavy armor, archers - are huge.

Also, game allows proper good old roleplaying by having quite a bit of kind of bizarre moral decisions influencing the plot.
