How do you guys deal with the fact that you're getting old?

I don't get many opportunities to talk about games.

Communities like these are the only chance I get to discuss something I love with like minded individuals... However, gaming is a time consuming hobby and it's easy for games to be forgotten as people invest their time with new titles and forget the old.

Do you think there's a time limit to enjoying retro games?

Welcome it. I'm way over caring about being young anymore. Got to experience some cool shit and I don't regret it. I just want to play and discover retro-vidya (and new shit that doesn't suck (good luck)) until I get tired of living and kick the bucket.

So no big deal really?

I wouldn't say there is a time limit, you just have to try other things and come back to it at some point, else it gets boring, like everything else in excess.

that said its next to impossible to get someone into retro games these days unless they played them aswell. so you may have to go alone, but at least you get a sword.

Thirded. I spend far less time playing games now than I used to, but I like it better because of that. It makes me more choosy what to spend my time on and I only play something if it's great.

I talk about both modern and retro vidya with my irl friends, many of who I know from high school and we still hang out and play vidya together.

That's why boards like this exist, although "talk" is debatable since most of the times it's memes and console wars.

I started taking my relationships and building a family more seriously now I'm almost 40 and have a house, 3 cars, a wife 15 years younger than I am, a 3 year old son and a girlfriend.

It's absolutely true that I don't get to do my gaming hobbies myself as much now but really that feeling of "getting old" I was having in my early 30s was my priorities subtly shifting. Even in my late 20s, I got just about as much joy from sharing my gaming collection with others and now that those others are my family, it feels right - although I don't get enough sleep since I still need my alone time to expand and deepen my interests.

Short answer - gradually and carefully. They're friends. I got my wife before she ever had her heart broken (risked the old statutory laws for over half a year even) and never hurt her. One of my bisexual exes flirted around with her and got her thinking about threesomes then that happened with this other girl but she was kind of jealous so I put an end to that. Our current girlfriend is super hot but actually more into her than me which mitigates the jealousy but she's actually kind of a pain in her ass and wants me to pick up one that's more into me.

It's amazing what's possible when you turn everything into a game.

Meh, some people think two men or two women is total degeneracy as well. I find the notion that we should all find one person and reserve all intimacy and sex only for them a little outdated. In the same way only men and women being together is a little outdated.

Not to say everyone should be gay or everyone should be poly. Just whatever works for each of us. Degeneracy is a bit of a fallacy in my opinion.

Wait just another couple years. You'll start to feel old, especially when you realize that already (at age 21) you were already out of the loop with people just 3 years younger, and even more out if it with people 3 years their junior. You're not absolutely old, but you're getting there.

As for videogames, unsurprisingly listening to the interests of my sister's boyfriend's 9 year old daughter indicates to me that what's hip with the kids, is, like usual, things aimed slightly higher at teens like Five Nights at Freddies, Undertale, and Minecraft (though I guess Minecraft was originally for 30 somethings). Getting older just means there's going to be more games I've played that young people haven't and a lot more games that young people play that I won't especially since I have a "technical" backlog of physical games in the hundreds.

So how do you deal with getting old? Personally I just do the things I like, like I've always done. I see little use in trying to adapt to new gaming trends just to seem hip to what the kids these days like.

That doesn't sound very healthy either. If she's young then she will definitely have a mind switch around when she turns 30. She's probably going to question herself, why she can't start anything without you holding her hands, why she's wasted her youth with only 1 man who also fucks other women, etc.
And during this crisis, what's "good" or "wrong" changes on a person's mind, that's why I wouldn't be so reliant on how your wife thinks now.

Anyway, it seems you're having a good time regardless of what might happen in the future. I'm kind of jelly but at the same time I'm satisfied with my gf and I think adding a 3rd woman would actually be less fun than it sounds outside of sex.

Two months ago it was my 17 year old cousin's birthday and a bunch of his friends were there along with us family. One of his friends asked me at one point how old I was. I also told him to guess and he said 24. Thus both younger and older people think I look early 20's. And it's true.

You didn't say that, but you ought to have said if in preference of saying "I look 24 and prime 21 year old girls find me attractive". Obviously nobody here really gives a shit, but it would at least make more sense than what you did say.

Getting old isn't bad, better to get old than to die young. The only thing you might regret about old age is that you're not as energetic as you can be and there's not enough free time for videogames, but it's not bad to be old, old men can be cool as long as they're not cranky old faggots, so be careful not to become one.

Try rounding out your diet with a healthy dose of seafood in the form of huge battleships. I pretty much dropped out of gaming altogether, except for some old 80's and early 90's systems that I really like. There are many thousands of old games, so it's not like I'll ever have time to play them all anyway.
I guess it's like the mass exodus of elves to Valinor at the end of the third age in LOTR. At least that's how it feels to me. And I have effectively sailed away long ago, since I don't even know what the current games are. Ditto with music, books, movies, etc. I stopped caring a very long time ago.

Many people misunderstand what it means when you say "You're getting old for videogames".

It doesn't mean being ashamed of playing them, or having a hobby, especially in this retarded climate of geek chic and of videogames being mainstream.

What starts to be taken away from you is being allowed to be invested in them. Going to midnight launches, being with 5 people and knowing there's no issue if you spend the next 50 minutes discussing a new title, knowing everyone is going to be on board with it if you're at home and say "How about we play some vidya", knowing that if you go at a friend's he might have games you don't to play together.

They're all things that are taken away from you as you age.
There is teens who will shout "If you let others dictate what you do you're pathetic!", almost as a desperate cry that hopes to be true, but if you live in the real world you know how naive they are.

Even if you 'express yourself', what good will it do? Even if you're charming and your videogame hobby ends up being seen as quirky and positive, it's only going to be that. You're not going to talk about videogames with someone uninterested in them, you're not going to play vidya with someone who doesn't like them, you're not going to express pride in stuff related to videogames to people who think they're a waste of time.

You can keep playing for as long as you like, age won't take that away.
But you will gradually stop being able to share the feeling with others.

I was born in '96 and didn't really start playing videogames hardcore until like late middle school.
I never really got to play the old classics on the NES, SNES, PS1, Xbox, PC98, and so on until I discovered emulators. Though I did play games like EEnE Edventures, Mario Kart Double Dash, Smash Bros Melee, Halo, Metroid Prime, Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, really a whole range of titles.
Now I sometimes kinda wish I could have been born a little further back so I could have enjoyed Final Fantasy I, LoZ, Mario, Quake, Goldeneye, Metroid, and others as a kid and not have to experience them for the first time in my college years.
As for getting old, I usually don't think about it too much, but there are moments of clarity where I just look back on all I've gone through and realize how much time I spent outside of reality, in other worlds. I don't regret a single second of it, but I do realize that the real world sort of left me behind, and now I'm trying to catch back up as I go through college and transition into adulthood.
I want to make videogames, and I've got the artsy fartsy classes out of the way and now I'm moving on to more tech oriented courses. I've played around with MMF2 and now I've moved on to Gamemaker. Before that I screwed around in Python, and before that I must have made a hundred maps on Halo 3 and Reach.
What I've noticed about these games that I played as a kid, and the ones others enjoyed in their youth, is how honest they are. There is no ulterior motive, there is no monetary favoritism. It presents to you a story, a world, people and places to get lost in because, well, real life just isn't really enjoyable at the moment. I want to figure out how these games of old created that wonder, captured the imaginations of thousands, I want to emulate that. That sense of "Wow, this place is pretty cool. I could stay here for a while."
Kind of off topic rant, sorry.

So I get to be a huge manchild. I play games from all eras, basically just playing whatever I'm in the mood for that day. I have noticed that a lot of my gaming friends that have kids, have been introducing their kids to retro gaming. There are a lot of retro games with mechanics that are simple for kids to grasp. It's a good entry point. In 2 weeks, one of the dads is going with me for a day trip to an Arcade and a night of drinking. Should be a good time. Dealing with aging in general is difficult for a few reasons.
1. The fear of death, obviously.
2. Reaching an age where you're shamed for having basically any hobby.
3. Still being devoted to things that "the mainstream" has already forgotten.

These things aren't really so bad however.
1. The fact that anything exists, including the physical laws that insist things must exist, demonstrates how limited human understanding of reality is as our causal understanding of the universe completely falls apart when you try to imagine its ultimate origin. While Jesus and shit isn't real, reality has a first cause that exists in some way outside of causality. The point is that while there is no promise of an afterlife, shit is way more complicated than religious sheeple or fedora-tipping atheists want to admit. You might get peaceful oblivion when you die, but you also might experience something more. There just isn't a way for us to know.
(Sorry for long rant, this is just heavy stuff)

2. As you get older, you should stop feeling shame. Instead of cringing at old men at comic conventions, admire that they didn't bow to societal pressure to abandon the things they love.

3. "The mainstream" just means "the current generation of 15-35 year olds". The generation that loves the stuff you love is still around in places like this and in the real world. Places like reddit, /v/, tumblr, twitter, etc. will naturally be full of young people, but older people are all as alive and well as you and share your interests.

Basically just don't worry about anything. This life is temporary so devote it to the things you love. All time is wasted time. All actions are, from a limited, human perspective, pointless. Just do what you want to do and be happy.

Now I'm in a new area trying to make all new friends and I'm finding it very difficult honestly. Talking to others about vidya seems kinda farfethched now but something I'm kind of content to live without. I tried to get my Ex into retro vidya and all that but she pretty much was only into dota. Infact I think those efforts strained things.

Then do it and use all your experience more than she has to teach her her lesson the hard way. Get yourself some girls lined up before you ever let your girlfriend have any indication that you're thinking about breaking up then once the dominoes are in place, actually press the issue when she makes whatever comment is making you think she's regretting the possibility of only ever being with you then show her why in a no-holds-barred social structure it's supposed to be ideal for the girl to only ever be with one man i.e. the prince charming fantasy. Dump her, hard - making her feel like it's entirely her fault for having that honestly irrational idea that somehow it would be better to be with a bunch of guys even after she was actually lucky enough to find a nice guy she was attracted to her first time out. Immediately start fucking those other girls you have lined up and make sure she sees the indicators of it. Don't rub it in her face or anything just seem happy in the company of other girls on your Facespace or Instatweet or whatever. Guaranteed she'll be addictively creeping on it. Likewise, use your superior male willpower to refrain from looking at hers. Hide her feed but don't block her, remember you want her able to see what you're up to while you seem unconcerned with what she's doing.

Since you didn't start with a Disney princess from the beginning you may have to later deal with her having hooked up with some douchebag who was the most aggressively on her shit but guaranteed he'll be a huge asshole and she will hugely regret her dumbassery if she even makes it that far before she crumbles and begs to come back after learning her lesson.

If it wasn't obvious from this advice I'm the guy you were initially asking for advice from even though you were quoting the guy who viewed the issue as an inevitability.

>I never heard of anyone being shamed for having a hobby. Since when?

Since never, he's full of shit. Bridge, gardening, fishing, cryptic crosswords, golf, shooting game clubs, are full to the brim of old people wishing younger people took them up. What's interesting is how you assumed a random person on /vr/ would have any grasp of reality.

I also like how he then awkwardly tries to bring in comic conventions as some sort of normal adult thing to do, or something that people on /vr/ would be interested in doing as an adult. As if it were some sort of natural similar interest.

I have zero interest in comics and have a really negative view of comic conventions. You're on your own there. /vr/ is a normal hobby that pretty much anyone would enjoy on some level, frankly comics for an adult is a bit weird. Go ahead and do it if you like.

At least 75% of the posts in this thread demonstrate a very tenuous grasp of reality.

>I don't get many opportunities to talk about games.

what more could you possibly talk about when it comes to retro games, assuming you're actually "old" like, say in your mid thirties. What is there left to talk about, really.

plus, your only chance of talking about this shit is with people who know nothing about it, 'cause they're the only ones who'll sit through your ridiculous and specific hobby they either never had or are too young to know about, a good reason a lot of asshole manchildren hang around geeky kids, 'cause anybody else got over vidya a long ass time ago.

this happens with everything, you' can't go around having discussions about the beatles unless you're a kid or hanging around kids, it's part of life, you get into other new or old shit that you've never done and then when you're done you go on and on and on until one day you 'll be ACTUALLY old and all you'll talk about is the past 'cause you can't deal with the present anymore.

I don't remember saying you should care, in fact the gist of the whole thing is that you shouldn't and feeling old is just a matter of perspective and you'll never be as physically young as before. In my case I actually have to deal with it since they foist entertaining the kid on me whenever convenient and I gotta deal with bad FNAF and Undertale OCs. I don't think her having "retro" interests would make child behavior any less cringey.

But I thought this was an age and gaming thread but it's turning into fuccbois, pedos, and grandpa whining.

1.Try to find a retro gaming club in your area.
2. Don't give any fucks if you're the oldest fuck in it
3. Try to give a shit about modern games. You don't have to play them, but like, know what people are talking about. Then you can segue into games you give a shit about without it being branded as "grandpa storytime"

Turning 30 next month.

I'm close to giving up videogames, not because of some silly notion like I've outgrown them, more then I have so little time to sit and actually enjoy them. 30 minutes just feels like... whats the point. Not enough time to get anywhere, or even enough time to, well, decompress.

This is coming form someone who even ran a videogame arcade for a few years (protip: unless you have a liquor license, don't).

I'm not really sure what to do with my hobbies anymore. No kids, but a wife, job, bullshit, time feels like it evaporates faster and faster. Guess that's what happens when you're in a routine.

You're like this guy I know who constantly complains about not being able to meet new people then plays MTG online when there are weekly sanctioned tournaments at our local shop.

>Communities like these are the only chance I get to discuss something I love with like minded individuals.

"Communities" like these are politically-charged shitfests. I can't get five sentences into a discussion without some /pol/smoker derailing the thread into "Hitler was right!"

If this is how my generation thinks, then I want nothing to do with them. I'm just as content to stick with my single-player games and never discuss them with anyone. Although I'm sure there are younger generations who get into retro gaming.

>How do you guys deal with the fact that you're getting old?

Possible health issues aside, I don't mind. As far as the atmosphere with current gaming developments is concerned, I just ignore what I'm not interested in. There's still a wealth of retro games I haven't picked up, so I'm sure there will always be something "new" to discover as I continue to get older.

I'm a confirmed bachelor, so I've got all the free time I want to sink into my hobbies. Still, I find myself going back to replay games I've already completed, especially RPGs. Doing challenge runs breathes new life back into the game.

I drive hand way to Melee beach to stay in my much younger wife's family's beach house and eat pic related to unwind from the stress of driving for eight hours

So yeah what's up with this thread? Are we still on topic? I've got one of my Dreamcasts in the trunk with aVGA adapter, a fishing controller and a copy of Sega Marine Fishing. That represents my entire contribution to this particular vacation. Any of you remember last summer when I said I was gonna do that shit? Well I'm making good on it. Maybe this thread will still be up long enough for me to post a pic of my nerd bird 17 year old sister in law playing it in the game room.

Seriously there's no excuse for not playing you guys' lives with the same skill you play your retro vidya. Retro is harder even.

Pic related is the view from our hotel balcony of my rented FiST. Just kidding it's just a regular Fiesta. Not that anyone on /vr/ gives one fuck about the difference.
