Did anyone ever really pay attention to the drifting system in this game?

>> No.3261161

VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It was a pretty big deal, actually.
Now the power slide on Mario Kart 1, that was truly overlooked.

OP here. I actually beat the game and got all gold trophies without paying too much mind to it. I did try to learn about it in the manual but then just said "fuck it" and went with my gut and felt it out.

>> No.3261172

I have to confess that I played this game to death as a kid without knowing about power slide boosts.

I played Mario Kart 64 for the first time ever just a few days ago and man the physics are weird. Didn't get the powerslide at all.

It had one?

What is it about Crash fanboys that they always need to post in Mario threads to make up for their inferiority Poochie complex?

yes, how else are you supposed to go fast? Its like a free half mushroom. As soon as you get orange let go and get another one going.

But playing with friends it ended up getting banned because no one else bothered to learn how.

>>3261156
It's very important in speedrunning, but I was never able to use it. It was nowhere near as refined as the Mario Kart Double Dash system (or maybe I just think that since I'm so used to the MK:DD physics nowadays).

>> No.3261405

Man, I loved Mario Kart 64 when it came out.

The thing is now I can't stand how it controls. It just feels awful to me.

I'd say it's the worst controlling Mario Kart to date (though I haven't played any after the DS game but that is definitely my favourite up until that point by a long stretch)

Even the SNES Mario Kart feels better.

Was a great way to break your controller.

it's essential what are you talking about? mostly because of how easy it was to exploit it for miniboosts

64 really isn't that good. I revisited it, too, and wasn't impressed. My 64 remains a largely F-Zero X box.

Super Mario Kart is legit good, though. More interesting courses and better music, too.

This. I run with a crew of ascended Mario Kart 64 players, and all of our controllers are loose like wizard sleeve in the left right direction.

>>3261156
You don't win if you don't drift with my group. Powerslides make the game x10 better. You honestly should be trying to powerslide almost every single curve.

>> No.3261705

It's very hard to win on some courses without it. But I liked the way there were 2 levels of slides in MK DS better.

peach is considered a lightweight in MK64. There's a video somewhere on YouTube that explores Mario Kart 64 mechanics and it basically comes down to three weight classes: Medium, Heavy, Light. All characters within a class have identical stats (top speed, accel, turning, off road, etc.) except for weight, interestingly enough. Which means the heaviest character in a class is the best in that class.

LIGHTWEIGHT
Yoshi is heavier than Peach is much heavier than Toad

MIDDLEWEIGHT
Mario is heavier than Luigi

HEAVYWEIGHT
Bowser is much heavier than DK is heavier than Wario

I didn't do it until I ran across someone doing it on a Youtube video many years later because I just didn't know how. I knew that you could jump but I didn't think anything of it and thought it was merely a utility move that slowed you down. Looking back, it was rather obvious, but I didn't have a huge amount of experience with these types of racing games yet.

My favorite (on mirror) course in the series. Having literally every vehicle come at you was nuts.

Probably the toughest too. Too bad all the traffic levels that came after it were piss easy.

>> No.3261894

I ignored it in Mario Kart 64, and still do.

I did it in DKR too, until I became an adult, and realized how broken drifting is in that game.

Also just taking break can send you around corners perfectly in DKR and if you're playing a fast acceleration character it doesn't affect your speed.

>> No.3262560

I did because drifting made the letter E come out of the wheels and at 7 I thought that was the greatest thing I'd ever seen.

It's not. MK drifting is so easy and enjoyable, in CTR you have to press another button to actually boost.

SNES Mario Kart had a power slide?
I don't believe you. Me and my brother had a few hundred hours in that.

I always drifted into corners.
Drift a right hand turn, move joystick left then right quickly turning the text yellow, move the joystick left then right quickly again to turn the text red.
Boost away.

I did powerslide, and at corners even. I just didn't bother to learn what the letters and the colors meant.

So that's how it's done? Still managed to get all gold without learning how to do it like that. At least I don't think I really bothered to learn it that well. It's been a long time since I played it.
