>Streets of Rage 1
Rough around the edges but still a great game, perfect embodiment of 80's action movie, good music, great level design, art is gritty and contrasting which fits the theme of the game perfectly.

>Streets of Rage 2
Bright and colorful looks more like a 90's Saturday morning cartoon than an 80's action movie. Rushed out the door in under a year after SoR1 blatantly unfinished, some stages are missing bosses and enemies/bosses are copy pasted multiple times, level design is poor with most stages being nonsensical with the feeling they were just thrown in with no rhyme or reason just to fill a checklist, many features are missing such as 2 player team attacks, stage hazards, pitfalls, weapons, fat enemies can be thrown like normal etc. Combat is very slow and infinites are rampant, game is horribly unbalanced and extremely easy even on "mania" the game also has many game breaking glitches and exploits such as getting infinite lives and random crashes.

>Streets of Rage 3
Return to its roots, more gritty and darker than SoR2, game-play and combat is the best it has ever been its fast fluid and has more depth than the other games, level design is also great with branching paths, multiple interactables, stage hazards. 2 player team attacks are back and fat enemies can no longer be thrown like regular enemies, most of the missing weapons from SoR2 also return. Bosses are all unique with interesting and unique mechanics making them very fun to fight against, the game has multiple hidden extra characters and bonuses and the game is very challenging. SoR3 actually pioneered a new genre of music

SoR3 is a fucking masterpiece, too bad people only judge it based on its butchered American release.

you're literally thinking of sor 3

also sor 2 "stole" it's music from actual dance music tracks just like sor 1 did, sor 3 on the other hand used an innovative algorithm to produce unique-sounding detroit techno

that said I agree that sor 3 is definitely faster and more radical than any of it's predecessors, even without the polish than sor 1 and 2 received it's still a fairly decent and underrated game in it's own rights

>None of those have stop and go moments like belt scrollers that scroll after you beat everyone up, or the "3D" field that is longer than it is wide.
They all have stop and go moments, and they are all longer than they are wide. They also allow you to move in eight directions just like "belt scrollers" do. Ergo, they're "belt scrollers."

A 2D platformer has stop and go moments. A 2D platformer allows you to move around the screen. A 2D platformer has levels that are longer than they are wide.

A horizontal shmup has stop and go moments (boss fights that stop you and then typically scrolling seamlessly resumes afterward for the next level). A horizontal shmup allows you to move around the screen. A horizontal shmup has levels that are longer than they are wide.

A soccer or football game with a horizontally oriented field has stop and go moments. A soccer or football game allows you to move around the screen. A soccer or football game has levels that are longer than they are wide.

According to the incredibly nebulous definition of "belt scrollers," these genres all apply.

Or you could just cut to the chase and let people know exactly what style of game you're talking about by saying "beat 'em up" since "beat 'em up" is universally understood and recognized.

Beat'em ups can mean also sidescrollers, pic related - it's Bad Dudes, a beatemup, and also a sidescroller.

In fact, that is relatively common - many beatemups like NES Kung Fu, Splatterhouse, Altered Beast, Dragonball Advanced Adventure, One Finger Death Punch, Shank, Karateka, 90% of Battletoads... sidescroller beatemups were and are still popular. So, clearly, we need some different term for those ones with 3D gameplay and 2D graphics.

So yeah, you're retarded.

No, the term caught on with a very small group of shitposters that have been persistently trying to force the term.

Loanwords that fill in as a word for something that doesn't have a specific word or phrase for it is one thing, trying to force a loanword on top of a pre-existing phrase is another. This is the latter.

Hack'n'slash is an RPG subgenre with minimal story and focus on combat (Diablo, Titan quest etc.), not necessary melee, can be magic as well. Term comes from tabletop RPGs.

Slasher is a 3d person action game with focus on melee combat, and melee combat diversity (combos and weapons). (Die by the Sword, Severance, Rune, Enclave, DMC series).

Action RPG is action first, RPG elements second, think System Shock, Deus Ex etc. Story often plays somewhat bigger role than in H'n'S, even if it's strictly linear.

Hack'n'Slash has much more emphasis on stats and random loot, also much less of a story.

Also I never said anything about how Capcom promoted DMC, I said how inept journos labelled it, disregarding that prior Hack'n'Slash was a very specific subgenre with defined characteristics: Stats, lots of activateable skills, random loot (not necessary though), story is just a backdrop for putting character into a combat scenario.

From there, many journos labelled DMC-likes as "Hack'n'slash" to the point where uneducated population accepted the term, the fact that there were very few actual hack'n'slash games at the time furthered the issue.

Straight from the wiki

>Hack and slash made the transition from the tabletop to video games, usually starting in D&D-like worlds.[2] This form of gameplay influenced a wide range of action role-playing games, including games such as Lineage,[3] Xanadu[4] and Diablo.[5]

>Distinct from hack and slash role-playing video games, the term "hack and slash" began being used to refer to early weapon-based beat 'em up action games, such as Golden Axe.[6][7] Journalists covering the video game industry often use the term "hack and slash" to refer to a distinct genre of 3D third-person, weapon-based, beat 'em up games, including titles such as Devil May Cry, God of War, Darksiders and Bayonetta.[8][9]

tl;dr: journos called DMC H'n'S, then arcade beatemups too. Dumb masses caught on. No one referred to arcade beatemups as HnS prior,

Personal experience. Again, vaguemness of a definition stems from people who don't know about generes but try to tell others which thing to call what.

The term originated from tabletop RPG's, transferred to videogame RPGs by proxy, as every other RPG term and stayed that way until the beginning of 2000's, and some jock decided "Hey, in this game you slash things with a bigass sword! This must be the thing they call hack'n'slash!"

No reviews from the 90's applied the term to this kind of games. Ill accept being proven wrong, but please link me to the magazines that did so then.

/vr/ doesn't appreciate Technos beat-'em-ups as much as they should. I'm guessing it must be a millennial thing, since the first Double Dragon came out on the arcades in the mid 80s, while Double Dragon II and River City Ransom (the company's two most successful beat-'em-ups on console) were for the NES.
