You don't have to dig very deep to find a hefty share of Sega ads that were vulgar, insulting, and rude. Its the reason why I have no sympathy for them losing the console war in the end.

He's fucking right though. Nintendo has the worst marketing of any console manufacturer ever and always has.

Sega's marketing on the other hand was arguably the best in the history of the video game industry. Most of the reason the Genesis sold at all was because of the brilliance of Sega of America's hype and "XTREME!" style marketing that was typical in the 90s. That's why it never made a dent in Japan where that marketing was a non-factor.

Sega officially licensed the Game Genie, after Nintendo sued to prevent the NES from being sold at all. Nintendo also altered the cartridge port on the NES Jr. in an an attempt to stop the Game Genie cart from fitting (Galoob released an adapter for that model, though).

MK2 was after Nintendo had become a laughing stock over the MK1 fiasco. They allowed blood in the SNES version because MK1 on the Genesis drastically outsold the SNES version. The Genesis was the primary development platform for the MK1 home port because the devs couldn't have blood on the SNES, and as such MK1 plays superior on the Genesis than the SNES version, which ended up being an afterthought. The SNES got better attention for MK2 because Nintendo finally allowed blood on the system, but that was only because Sega forced their hand.

Nintendo spent years trying to litigate their games out of video stores, and they ultimately failed but not for a lack of trying. They were major scumbags about it, and in Japan they actually succeeded. It's illegal to rent any games in Japan specifically because of Nintendo.

Weren't they developed by different companies. I'm sure Sculptured Software did the Super NES versions, while the Genesis versions were done by Probe.

The Yamaha sound chip in the MD/Gen technically produces music closer to the arcade version but I find myself still preferring the SNES port. That could just be nostalgia though, as I owned the SNES port in my childhood and only played Sega's version recently.

I turn 30 this year and am thinking about getting myself a fancy modded blue Game Gear with one of McWill's screens and VGA out. I'm torn though as to whether to pay someone else to do it, or do it myself. If I pay someone else I'll end up spending like $200, and I just bought a new solder station and can probably do it myself just fine. On the other hand, it's my birthday and it'd be nice to have someone else do it.

I guess I'll have to see how I feel after I recap my childhood Game Gear. If I find the experience of working on the board to be thoroughly unpleasant maybe I'll hire a professional to mod a blue Game Gear for me, so I guess I'll have to see how it goes.
