What's your favorite game of 1999?

I think it was such a cop-out that Q3 didn't have a proper single player game.

There were more great games released in half of 1999 than this entire console generation.

R-Type Δ
A near flawless transition into the 5th gen era, and a prime example of how to do cinematics in a game without disrupting the flow. Easily one of my favorite PSX games, period. <3

Revolutionary at what? Making gameplay obsolete?

There's already a simulation experience out there, which allows you to walk around, and buy plastic toys from mechanical vendors.

It's called life.

I still think that part of the sticky could be done in a more informative way regarding PC. People seem to just assume a hard 1999 on all PC games, because of the platform being a bit different to consoles in how its hardware releases work. But you look at PS1, N64, and DC, and they have plenty of games released in 2000 and 2001 that are permitted here.

Holy fuck, I remember going in blind getting this game off of the PSN as a PS Classic a little less than a decade ago and being amazed by it.

they don't assume, that's what the sticky says

problem is, pc hardware advanced in that time. pc games from 2000, 2001 and onwards are a whole different beast. cutting off pc software release dates at 1999 was the alternative to denying pc altogether, because of its continuous hardware nature

I dunno, 2000 had plenty of PC games that were not demanding of new hardware. Thief 2 and Deus Ex both use dated engines, and could run on older hardware, but are technically not retro because of being released in 2000. But eh, whatever.

include 2k for PC releases and you got to include 2k for system releases, so you got a whole new set of systems included suddenly.
PC releases do behave a bit different to console releases. The rules in the sticky are a compromise. Not ideal, but getting the work done

You're making this assumption because the Unreal engine was released in 1998, and you never played Deus Ex at release.

Deus Ex is super CPU heavy, like way more than any other Unreal 1 game. It's not even 100% stutter-free 60 fps on a Pentium III Tualatin S 1.4 ghz, and this is an incredibly powerful pre-Netburst CPU.

If by fine you mean 10-15 fps. Read the posts in this thread.

Probably Wipeout 3, which is criminally under-rated. I am trying to find an eboot of Wipeout 3 SE (which contains the original Wipeout 3 plus 8 remastered tracks from Wipeout and Wipeout 2097) for my PSP but without much success.

Yes. A lot better. Super is tied with Final as the worst R-Type game. Don't avoid the rest based on that poor first impression, it's a fantastic series otherwise.

On a related note, the arcade version of Super is called R-Type II and is some real hardcore shit. Start with the original, then movie onto III & Δ afterwards.
