3DO - Atari Jaguar - CD-I, Amiga 32 and other early 5th gen consoles. Are there ANY games worth playing on any of these consoles? Can they all be emulated?

The niche factor of these consoles kind of fascinate me

Dunno about the others, but 3DO can be emulated via 4DO, which works perfectly for most of the library at this point.

Check out Lucienne's Quest if you like jrpgs.

Amiga CD32 can run regular Amiga software. It's the only one of the four that I don't have but Amiga is emulated more or less perfectly. I'd still like to own one though.

Interesting that Amiga 32 runs regular Amiga. What are some notable originals/ports on regular Amiga? I'm American and never had experience with 80s-early 90s computers.. had more experience with IBM PCs.

An Amiga CD32 is just an Amiga with some components missing and the ability to autoboot CDs. CD32 games can just be run directly on a real Amiga and vice versa if the CD32 gets a keyboard, mouse and floppy (and maybe an hdd). Hackers have custom made CDs with hundreds of Amiga floppy games that can be burnt and run in a CD32.

A console is a dedicated machine that plays games. Is it not?

>> No.3228210

>>3227592
They did in fact market the thing's ability to play games. Was it entirely for playing games? No, but it was indeed a platform that had a number of games. If it couldn't play games well, then they shouldn't have allowed games to be developed for it.

A lot of people used their PS2 as a DVD player and at the time that was a big selling point. It was a DVD player and a game console.

>A console is a dedicated machine that plays games. Is it not?
That's not what the CD-I was.

>>3228210
>They did in fact market the thing's ability to play games.
Closer, but it was designed as a video media machine with interactive features, similar to what you also see in interactive DVDs. The push to market it as a gaming machine wasa re-imaging attempt after it had already been released.
>A lot of people used their PS2 as a DVD player and at the time that was a big selling point. It was a DVD player and a game console.
This comparison only works if the PS2 hadn't been the successor to the PlayStation, which was a gaming console, and if the PS2 were marketed as a media player over a gaming machine. It wasn't.

Go back to youtube, both of you.

Did you know that "CD-i" actually referred to a FAMILY of machines? The early models could support games through the interactivity of the machine, but it wasn't pushed as one until later.
>there were other models?
Yeah, if you weren't such arrogant, stupid newfags, you'd know this. The CD-i wasn't marketed as a "console" until the 400 series of models. This information is readily available through even two seconds on Wikipedia, but watching youtube videos is much better suited for your mentalities than reading, I'm sure.

Also, take a look at the manual for one of the early models:
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/776658/Philips-Cdi-210.html

You can count mention of the word "games" on one hand, and even then, games aren't even at the beginning of the list of features (media playback is).

So you're saying that at a point during the CD-i's life as a retro system it was indeed marketed as a game device. Congrats on contradicting your own argument that it isn't fair to discuss it as a gaming platform. Or whatever point you're trying to make. Go watch the infamous infomercial about it and they sure as fuck advertise gaming.

In the end, though, what is your point? That CD-i games shouldn't be discussed on here? Or is it a "PSX IS A VERSION OF THE PS2 NOT A PROPER PS1 NAME" level of showoff... thing?

See >>3228454:

They simply CALLED it a gaming machine after the fact. Imagine if Texas Instruments decided to sell their graphing calculators as handheld gaming devices. You can actually play games on them, but I doubt you'd seriously buy into that angle.

Try to actually read this time:

http://www.videogameconsolelibrary.com/pg90-cdi.htm#page=reviews
>At its launch in 1991, the system was not even displayed in stores with the other video gaming systems of the time (Sega Genesis, Nintendo SNES, etc.). It was promoted within its own area, closer to the personal computer section.
>Early CD-i systems did not come with a standard gamepad, but were accompanied with a multifunctional IR remote
>With dwindling sales and the videogame market doing well, Philips decided to reintroduce the machine as videogame console. The Phillips CD-i 450 was designed to look more like a console and included a pack-in game called Burn Cycle.

http://www.philipscdi.com/history.htm
>The 16-bit CD-ROM based system was not promoted as a gaming platform. In advertising, Phillips highlighted the multimedia applications
>By 1994, with low sales, Philips decided to alter its approach to advertising the CD-i. It was finally marketed as videogame platform. The console was redesigned to more resemble a standard gaming system. The price was lowered to $299 and a pack-in game named Burn:Cycle was included.

3DO is the only one with enough decent games to buy.here is work on forcing 240p, has rgb mod available, has drive emulator available. You can get the mpeg/vcd expansion and watch movies on it.
Jaguar is neat because it's the last Atari, play one and the competition back to back and it's no surprise why.
CDi is a joke as a console, it might be a better cd player than an early ps though not sure.

PFDs were the shit. 3do was badass and still very playable today, the original 3 button controllers suck though.
