I think, if a game has a previously unseen concept or design or otherwise, and then shitloads of games after it never adopt it, but then it sees a revival and popularity later, that can be seen as "ahead of its time."

Or, perhaps, a game that was too ambitious for its resources, that might be trivial to do today. It's truly the "idea" that is ahead of its time, I think.

1) It seems many forgot the huge backlash the game got, and is still fair, heck I was listening the other day giving his mind about it Romero, mentioning how predictable he was and that's just one thing.

2) Sadly, is actually better than many modern FPS that came before, no regen health, no cinematic bullshit, (well sometimes it happens though) you can carry all the guns, you can run more than 5 seconds and the map while being mostly linear it still carry that vibe of being in an actual place you can freely explore to a degree.

'ahead of its time' implies that people didn't get the game at release but it was understood later. neither of these really apply to doom as the game obviously was hugely successful when it came out. the original game does have a niche following now but the number of people playing it is dwarfed by fans of modern AAA fps games like COD, Destiny and what have you. furthermore, doom's legacy is sustained by its source code release, modern source ports and modding tools. if you could only play the game at its original settings (320x200 and 35fps) without source ports and mods there would be even fewer people still playing it. you show the majority of modern gamers doom today - especially in its original form - and most of them would find it extremely archaic, 'old and busted'.

was it a hugely influential and important game? of course. did john carmack's engines shape the entire landscape of FPS games? no shit. but ahead of it's time? not by definition and it's retarded to say that. the doom style shooter had its time and place but it's obviously not the standard anymore and it hasn't been since like '98.

The thing is, Daggerfall worked because they actually attempted it. No other developer, including present day Bethesda, has the balls to actually do it. Daggerfall is the ultimate template for a computer RPG, where the computer takes on the role of a DM, instead of a narrator. Conceptually Daggerfall is very simple, and I'm quite sure even code-wise it's not exactly deep. I can not imagine a scenario where a company attempts such a game and does not succeed to some degree. It's just that nobody is attempting it, which is really frustrating.

How is exactly Majora's Mask "ahead of its time" ? The only thing he does more than OoT is the NPCs and their schedules, which not only isn't exactly something that became a norm in video games, but was done by La Abadia Del Crimen in 1987, a decade earlier.

And even as far as OoT is concerned, its 3D isn't "ahead of its time", but rather on par with its time, and pretty much everything it does was done by other games before, it only borrows plenty of cool elements and put them in the same package.

Just stop it with OoT and MM. You can say that you love those games, but that doesn't make them groundbreaking, and claiming that only shows how closeminded your "console only" perception of retro games is.

Since EA killed Sim City, I kinda wish there was a grittier and more obscene version of Sim City, with gun stores, liquour stores, strip clubs, red light districts, the chance to partake in political corruption.

Not in a grim and serious way, but more of a 2000AD manner, like, the Saint's Row of city simulators, where really dumb and silly shit happens.

Yet ironically, it got retooled into what was basically a Doom 2.7 due to Romero's meandering and them deciding to just rush into taking the safe road they knew to meet the release date.

In terms of style and gameplay, Quake is much closer to Doom than Duke.

And at that, Doom clone was just a dumb phrase used before First Person Shooter entered the general vernacular, Duke is an FPS in every sense of the word.

If you want to see a game which is quite literally a clone, look at Gloom for the Amiga, THAT was a shameless ripoff of Doom

For new doom, the Revenant was really the focus for like a year, before we saw doom guy, I read here somewhere that it was another sign that the devs were centering on doom memes but I dont remember that one (about the revenant). Brutal doom got some good coverage on gaming sites so that one wasn't all that surprising. I wonder if there are any more.

This is not true, the FPS genre was pretty much split in two with Quake on one side and Duke on the other. Build games kept being released after Quake and were doing very well, up until the end 1998.

Also Build games, and Duke in particular, had the advantage of demanding lower minimum specs requirements. You needed a recent computer to run Quake, not everyone had it.

Finally Duke's multiplayer was huge, both online and in internet coffee places, the ones I knew had Duke in lan, not Quake.
As for CTF, AFAIK it was not "Quake" which invented CTF but Quake modders, which makes a pretty big difference. I could be wrong but, AFAIK, the first game with an official (non mod) CTF mode was Shadow Warrior.

As far as FPS are concerned it innovated by incorporating real life places you can project into, while keeping the Doom-era level design and gameplay.

But most importantly, it was the interactivity that mattered in Duke and which made it stand out, on top of all the cool effects you could trigger or witness in the game. Seeing huge explosions that take down entire buildings, sectors moving in crazy ways, being able to take a piss or play pool, was amazing for the time.

In comparison Quake's levels are completely abstract (the add-ons are better in that regard though), the game was barebones, and there isn't even an "action" key, which says it all...

I wouldn't say it was ahead of it's time, I'd say it was exactly in its time - after Wolf3D and before Quake. First System Shock would be a much better example, that or Gun Buster - which is first FPS that let you freely aim using "twin stick" control scheme (with separate controls for moving and aiming), released in arcades like two months after Wolf3D, and years before Quake when separate controls for aiming and walking would become standard (mind you, it wasn't exactly mouselook - you were basically playing Wolf, and used a light gun to shoot anywhere within what you were seeing on screen - so kind of like a cross between a Wolf3D clone with a light gun shooter, that allowed you to freely choose your viewpoint).

Oh, and it also had fully texture mapped walls and ceilings, and animated sky textures - a year before Doom.

Yes, it's getting a lot of critical praise for being fairly good and not a generic modern military shooter.
The game kind of springs off from Doom 64 of all things, and it takes a bunch of good cues from older fantastical shooters, it isn't perfect, but it's a hell of a step in the right direction, especially given that expectations from long time fans had been mixed to low.

Personally, I barely expected it to be better than Doom 3 (which I thought was kind of ok), but it"s way better.

The multiplayer seems very lukewarm though (I haven't tried that), but snapmap is surprisingly not too shabby as console software (it remains to be seen if we'll get real modding tools).

I haven't played the absolute latest one, but I'll name some things.
The sound design is really bad, everything sounds unpleasant or awful.

The code is an unoptimized mess, and the silly gore is taxing on the already poorly optimized GZDoom engine, if your machine isn't high end, it'll run like shit.

A lot of things as how they work are crude hacks, 3D models used for blood spots in crushing ceilings will not adjust to height for example, and they'll overlap over steps of stairs and platform so you have them floating partially in the air.

The aesthetic design is good in some ways, and really bad in others, a bunch of it clashes.
The abuse of particle effects and smoke is fucking annoying as shit and doesn't look good, I hate how the explosions look.
The shotgun has this really silly and awkward looking reload where you put in each shell in a cartoonishly rapid fashion.
The Aliens muzzleflashes are honestly not very appealing.

The gameplay has some neat features, and some annoying features.
Half dead monsters making noise or crawling about is annoying and a waste of my time, this detail almost feels disturbing in it's inclusion.
Shooting the gory remnants of dead enemies is pointless and sometimes the gore gets in the way of what you're trying to shoot at.

Basically, for every one thing it does well, it does two or three other things not so well or outright terribly.
