3221896 No.3221896 [Reply] [Original]

So i just played Quake for the first time and it's really fun.
But when I watched some youtube video about it, I realized that the graphics look kinda different.
Did all the vids I watched had the same graphic options, or does my game really look different.
It's pirated btw.

Looks a lot blander than the original

There are many different Quake clients, many of which have different lighting, effects, etc. Along with many mod packs for high res textures as such.

You've got a highly modded copy of quake there.

Ok.

Are controls/gameplay usually modded in the clients too?

>> No.3221948

>>3221937
Often yes.

Original quake was mostly just keyboard. There is mouse controls but they were hit/miss sometimes.

If you want the true vanilla experience, grab the dos version, it runs fine in Dosbox. If you want to run it in Windows but still want a more vanilla version, get WinQuake or GLQuake. Both are ID official ports.

But either way, play the game the way you enjoy it, Quake is a fun ride.

Also, forgot to mention, you may get more responses from the Doom general thread on /vr/. Not uncommon to see Quake 1 mentioned in there even if it's not the primary topic.

what? no way
mouse control was common, although crosshair and mouse look weren't enabled by default it's easily added.

It's the darkplaces mod.

What? No. Quake was the first game to have mouselook as a standard function. Here's a video from 1996 when QuakeWorld launched a few months after the game came out, you can see most of the players are using mice.

Wow, holy shit, no. We used to laugh at people like you. In fact, I'd like to laugh at you right now. Are you also one of those guys that insists that nobody was using kb+m in DOOM in 1994, too?

>If you want to run it in Windows but still want a more vanilla version, get WinQuake or GLQuake. Both are ID official ports.

Wow, holy shit, also no. Get quakespasm and darkplaces and see which you like better - quakespasm is probably the best sourceport for vanilla Quake.

Like I mentioned its, there but it's hit and miss. Most mice in dos that were serial or supported the official Microsoft PS/2 Dos mouse driver or the Cute Dos driver do work, but not always. And AT mice are messy but most PCs that can run Quake at the time had PS/2 ports.

Kinda take for granted the mice "just werk" these days.

I knew that mouse options were available in Doom when it was new but I couldn't stand how when you moved the mouse forward and back it moved you forward and back, with no options to disable this and just have it for turning and shooting I just used a keyboard, along with everyone I knew (anecdotal). Thank god this changed in future ports of Doom though.

STOP USING DARKPLACES ITS SHIT, DARKPLACES SHILLS FUCK OFF.

Quakespasm is the best singleplayer source port.

don't call it pirated. quake didn't need a cdkey or had any DRM whatsoever so you could borrow from a friend. besides, world 1 is shareware

You probably can but Quake was the game that pioneered mouse+keyboard controls - it had them on as default, iirc.

I know for a fact that Doom 2 allowed joysticks, and so gamepads would work as an extension.

Technically, no, it wasn't default at first, but they changed it shortly after release.

>> No.3223570

>>3221996
That is best, but before that was widespread knowledge people would hold a button or key (usually mouse2) down to aim. Or even use the keyboard look. Of course default sv_aim settings always screwed up your aim so it didn't even matter where you were looking.

Bots as in multiplayer? Why would you do that? Get some friends or something, really
>>3222196
Yes, you can, but it's not very comfortable, especially when you play it on Hard/Nightmare

>> No.3223594

>>3223582
'Cause you can really rely on friends to play when you want to and not to generally have shit taste in games. Quake's a dead game outside of hardcore rapists with whom casual players cannot mingle. Surely you understand why somebody might want to get a tiny idea what multiplayer Quake was like without presenting their bum for easy fucking.

>>3222193
There are old bot mods, frogbot and frikbot. Expect dumb but cheap bots that aren't much fun to play with. Dunno if there's anything better. Read the readmes.

>> No.3223669

>>3223594
Yes, I get that Quake's multiplayer is pretty much dead for casuals but that's exactly why I'm telling him to get some friends as noobs as him to play a little.

It's not even that hard to convince them, you just gotta give them time and patience to not freak out or something. Get GameRanger (or Hamachi/Tunngle, but that's maybe too much) and start fragging.

Didn't Duke Nukem 3D and Heretic also have ability to look up and down? I mean, Heretic was running on Doom engine.
