Hypercuck made a demonstration of a "Smart Boy" last year(?). It's a contraption you hook your smartphone into and it acts as a gamepad with a classic Game Boy form factor.
The thing itself is a meme —they expected you to use your own carts— and they didn't release it to my knowledge, but in my opinion the idea is still good. Does a similar gamepad exist? Where2buy? Would be perfect for emulating.

If no thing like this exists, could a USB OTG gamepad be modded so you could fit the innards to a 3D printed harness or something? I really don't want this idea to fade into obscurity.

You'll be much better served by just getting yourself a quality controller than by chasing after something that will replicate the game boy experience but if you absolutely must, just buy a broken game boy and modify it yourself using a bluetooth gamepad diy kit

Why don't the damn thing just be a gamepad for roms? I know that Kyperkin won't because of piracy but what about those other 3rd party developers who make those vanilla controllers to hook up to your phones charge slot but instead of making a standard controller with a cord just use the design that Hyperkin did.
