I've been playing the fake pinball version of a machine (Black Rose) I have in my basement but don't know how to repair. It's been sitting down there for years, so it'd probably need a decent bit of work... I've also been trying some of the other fake pinball recreations included in the pirated download, but from either nostalgia or its simplicity I just like Black Rose best. The best way to get points (sinking a ton of ships) is also satisfying as hell, and is only more satisfying on a real machine thanks to the cannon.

Anyone else played it? It's pretty underrated, in my opinion...

I got to agree with you there. Sure, a color LCD can do more, and better, but displaying stuff is not what pinball is about. The display should be just good enough to display information, without distracting. The old DMDs did a good job at that. Also, they're kind of iconic nowadays.
I'd like to go one step further and expand it to all LCDisplays on modern machines. Using physical tricks and gimmicks is so much cooler than playing back a random video

They manufactured hundreds of copy-paste EM machines, then got undeniably left in the dust as pinball got more advanced. Late Gottlieb/Premier is a thing of fucking beauty - if you love train wrecks, that is. Makes me wonder what would have happened if some of those themes they got went to Bally/Williams/Midway instead. to me showing you have good taste is less so having one Pinball machine it's more having a collection that shows your taste
me personally I would collect machines from different eras by different designers that i enjoy to show off my "taste"

When you launch the ball, it goes up the normal path on the right, then goes around the top, along the left side, around another set of turns, and finally up another straight into the playfield, essentially they incorporated a nascar track into the table for the ball to run on, and I think that's cool, even if I'm not a nascar fan. I've never seen another table do something cool and thematic with the ball launch like that, closest I can think of is the one Arabian Nights one where you shoot for the snake.

My father was a pinball wizard and, in the days when you could rack up an infinite number of free games, he'd always leave 99 free games for the next guy to come along.

There was an arcade across from the building where my father worked, and every night after work he'd spend an hour or two there unwinding, playing pinball. He only ever spent a single quarter, and could play as long as he wanted on it. The arcade owner hated him and two went to war. Each day my father would come in to find the pinball game he'd played the day before had been jacked up to a higher angle, had bumper strength reduced, the flippers weakened, and the spinners all tightened. He'd still rack up free games, and the next day the machine would be made even harder. After months of this, every pinball game in the building was practically impossible to play and tilted up so high that the slightest jiggle from pushing the flippers would cause the machine to tilt.

I think it's a really well made set of pinballs. The developer, Fuse Games, is some of the remains of Pro Pinball's Cunning Development. The pinballs in the game are not "realistic", there's lots of moving objects and effects, though mentally I treat them like enhanced video mode. The mechanics are simple, but because of that also quite accessible. As such, I think it's a great example of a portable game. Based on a fairly big console game it sums up the story. Based on actual pinball machines it streamlines the gameplay, without losing entertainment value.
All that said, I really love the whole theme. Metroid, and playing the whole thing as a morph ball was just genius. A beautifuly little detail is that morph ball samus is always aligned with her movement direction. She'll turn, if necessary. Sure, it's just the ball sprite changing, but it fits the theme, and makes reading the low resolution screen easier.
The game's story has 6 tables. Two of them are closest to normal standalone tables, with a theme, and lots of shit to do. The remaining 4 tables are "boss" tables, with at least one central boss, and minimal table design to enable interaction with that boss.
Lots of rambling here, but I think as far as digital/virtual games this is one of my all time favorites, because of that variety, yet focus on a theme, the creativity in interactions, the fairly strong story telling (for a pinball, anyway) and the "friendly" difficulty giving even noobs like me a chance to do something.

Pic is my favorite table. Everything flows so nicely there, including the music (though that's all from the video game, so the pinball can't get much credit there)

That's what I like about pinball video games. No point in restricting yourself to real-world limitations when you're working in a virtual space.

>> No.3226023

>>3226007
it's a mixed bag. A huge part of the appeal of pinball machines is their physicality, and even the video games tend to simulate (more or less successfully) a lot of that physically. The angled playfield, the flipper arms, the bumpers, slingshots, they all behave "physical", and they give the player a sense of that they're playing a digital variant of a real machine.
To me, Metroid Prime Pinball did good again due to the way they added the "unrealistic" bits.
Like the already mentioning alignment of the Morphball. Unrealistic as fuck, but super fitting for the theme, and not distracting from the table at all.
The wall jumps (upper third on both pics) have Samus act in her traditional humanoid manner, but only very briefly.
The color coordinated phazon multiball is unrealistic as well, but it feels like a careful enhancement again, because it's still a fully table dominated game. It's just, the targets are put on the field out of nowhere, randomized, and color coordinated, so you need to hit the right target with the right ball.

I guess what I'm saying is, these additions don't sound like the developers feeling restricted by the physicality of pinball and letting all loose. It's more like the developers envisioning not-yet-possible things for actual tables, and then letting them interact on a virtual table.

What's deviating from this is the combat mode. Both tables have a circle pad bottom center. When combat mode is enable, and Samus rolls over that circle, she becomes humanoid for a short fight section. She stands in place and autofires. Flippers just change the direction she fires at. The whole thing is over aver a couple handful of seconds. That's why I kind of treat it like video mode, and I'd dare say, it could even be done fully in video mode.
There are a few other brief features that stray, and I have to admit, I kind of don't like some of them, because of that.

And after all the MPP rambling in >>3226023 I have to add, I played some Zen Pinball tables, and they didn't appeal to me as much. Mars was a freebie, and that shuttle was just so annoying. It didn't feel like a cool toy or feature, it felt like it's getting in the way of the actual pinball. Some of the other tables were not doing any better. Sure, you can do all these things, sky's the limit and all that, but, to me, pinball is a bit of a finicky kind of game, that does not handle well when it's pushed to the side lines, because a toy wants all the attention.

Are there any good multiplayer pinballs? I don't mean hotseat scoring, unless the actions of one player affect the other player somehow. Someone mentioned a two player cocktail design in a thread a while back, but that's just one ball for two players, which does not sound very pinball to me. Is there anything else? Machines where you can play duels, like a score chase, affect the playfield of the other player somehow? So each player has a ball constantly in play, has their own table, but is still player with/against someone else.

not if they affect each other. Say, there are moveable barriers on the table, that pop up on one table, when targets are hit on another. These can be negative barriers, that keep your opponent from scoring, or positive barriers, that protect your co-player's outlanes or make a ramp shot easier. Or you do a score race, who gets faster to a certain score, with parts on the field changing based on anybody reaching a certain score, so, for example, a certain bonus is only available to everyone playing, as long as the player most ahead has fewer than X points. Or co-op tables, where any one player can trigger objectives, but the objects can only be completed together. A cross table combo, for example, where a player does 3 ramps on their table, which lights up a ramp on the other table, that the other player needs to shoot to continue the combo and so on. Or a multiball where one player can provide additional balls to the other one, by shooting certain sink holes during the mulitball, which "pass" the ball from their table to the other one.

or plain shooter death match between up to 4 players/tables. Targets and ramps on the table select gun, ammo and what player you're aiming at, fire the weapon, etc. Quick targets pop up to dodge. Health is tracked as a stat for all four players, maybe prominently on the playfield. If any player is killed, their table behaves like a tilt, with flippers not reacting and the only ball in play draining. Last man standing wins. Machines may even have different layouts and rules for different fighting styles.

car themed table with an actual race, where players need to shoot ramps and targets to speed up, change gear, bump nearby opponents, shift down and brake to not spin at a turn, and so on. Tables again react to each other. So you got to brake (hit the right target) on a timer when the car in front of you brakes, for example.

There's not much to draw really. Any of the connected machines can change gameplay state and move physical targets based on input from one of the other connected machines. Ideally the tables are specifically made for that kind of play, so the rules "make sense". I mentioned a few such theme/rule examples in the two posts I quoted.
For existing tables it's kind of hard to convey to the player why the kid next to them started the multiball for them.
However, the table itself would look like a fairly standard common single player table. It's all in the rules and theme, no special playing field.

Yeah, definitely no frankensteined machine. Each player has their own playfield. All multiplayer interaction is through the rules. After all, you still want all the things that come with good pinball tables. Comfortable size, solid layout, ability to nudge and bump, and so on.

Just imagine the frenzy at an arcade when three connected RPG-themed machines are playing together, one player opens the door to the end boss, all machines play the boss theme unison (maybe some light animation across all machines, that relies on the way they are positioned in the arcade), and a 4-ball per machine multiball starts, with all players together draining the health of the big bad boss on a timer. Hell, you'd get shouting matches between players "shit, he paralized my upper left flipper, can any of you two spare a potion? (sink hole, select inventory item with flippers). Followed by a couple more seconds of target rampage to hit that boss and then high fives all around because 3 players together fulfilled one common objective.

After forcing them to make him a pizza and making demands for $100,000, getaway transportation, and a copy of The Widow's Son, Noid surrendered to the police.[4] After the incident ended, Police Chief Reed Miller offered a memorable assessment to reporters: "He's paranoid."[5] Noid was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, extortion, and possession of a firearm during a crime. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Noid spent three months in a mental institution, and eventually committed suicide in 1995. This incident caused Domino's Pizza to discontinue advertising using the Noid as their mascot.[6]

not every machine needs gimmicks. Even in the present you can design machines that have no ramps, no video display, but still have a wonderful flow and cool opportunities for combos to rake up the points. That flow and feel of the table is more important than lots of gimmicks and video mode. It's why people still play, and enjoy, the old machines.
Also, deviating from the modern ramps + slingshots + two flippers design that's so commonplace nowadays is a nice change of pace.

I'm digging the widened flipper gap with the snake head inbetween that thrusts forward

I like how if you fail to reach the ring leader the wire form drain for ring 3 doesn't feed the ball softly onto the flipper for an easy mystery wheel, and sends the ball off into a dangerous tracjectory
adding an element of danger to failure

and having the figure suspended in air by aerial silks? that moves around is neat would be cool if you could give it a high five for something during a mode and get extra points , but the arm would break much sooner

[Jersey Jack's secret Pat Lawlor abortion is] titled "Dialed In" and is a game where a cell phone located on the game calls you and the guy tells you what shots to make. A robot's arm stops a shot on the upper ramp when lit. Pat is using his 4 magnets again to throw the ball around the playfield below the cross cross ramps. Lit inserts move toward the player and you must stop them before they reach the flippers. There is another lcd display that has 2 way mirror that you have to shoot at like pin 2000. His 3rd flipper on the right middle shoots the ball up a ramp. Pat has moving target in the middle playfield blocking shots to the jets. Pat is directing this narrow game to the engineer like he did with us at WMS using someone named Wally and some Mexican as a cad drafter. I guess Jack will have to get some more investors to produce this game......as we all know of the delays from Hobbit. They are more than 4 months behind and still working with the same 2 year old white wood. Don't look for this game anytime soon.

3 new games Jack has in the lineup are Muppets, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Toy Story. He has the Disney license for them now. The Muppets is a poor choice as is only one of many Jack has made with JJP.

no doubt about that, but they're all made in the past. Nothing against that past, but I think pin designers learned a thing or two regarding good flow, placement of toys and so on. EM is, more so than SS, and whatever the current tech does, an engineering feat. It's the toy equivalent of an Analytical Engine. And just like purely mechanical watches are not only alive and kicking, they are getting constant refinements and improvements, I'd love to see the same happen to EM pinball. Just pushing the envelope of what you can do with a couple cables, cogs and a shitload of patience and creativity.

Medieval Madness does has Green in the top left.

Interesting! The table I played definitely had red lighting for Medieval Mayhem. It was the first time I had ever played it, so I just assumed that's what it should look like.

ZCIV happened just last month and its the reason I've been lurking in the thread. I never really had an interest in pinball until I started talking to people who explained the rules and modes of the different machines and how stacking bonuses worked. I got to play a ton of machines and have either played or seen most of the ones in this thread at ZC. I bought my first two tables on Pinball Arcade that night, but they're pretty expensive so I'm waiting on a sale to get more.

Bride of PIN•BOT is my favorite one because the advancement is permanently shown on the table and it kind of tells a story. I like the feeling of getting in the zone and shooting the heart ramps consecutively. Overall it's a fun table with neat gimmicks that's has rules simple enough for a beginner like me to remember.

I'd like to find other tables like Pin-Bot, Pub Brawl, or Medieval Mayhem where I feel like I'm advancing a story.

Zen Pinball for the 3DS is a port from a system with a single widescreen. All assets, camera logic, models, etc, are made for that viewing angle. The tables are designed to be viewed as a whole.
Meanwhile Metroid Prime Pinball is specifically made for the DS. The tables contain no gameplay-relevant elements in their middle, because that middle is covered by the gap between the two screens.
The only way Zen Pinball could take advantage of the two screens is by designing tables specifically for that layout, and, well, they just can't be bothered.

When I was but a wee lad, I was taken to my local arcade with my family. I didn't really get the chance to play much, but I did try a pinball table. I don't remember the name or anything, just vaguely that on the table itself was a large graphic of lots of money and maybe a guy in a suit.

Set one of two ways, most ops go for the computer controlled option where the programming will move the replay score up or down depending on how players are doing. 7 mil is kinda low for Elvis so I imagine a whole load of people had poor games (like 1 or 2 mil) so it was set low by the computer.

The other way is the replay value is always a set score, so for example it would always be 7 mil, and then there might be another one at 14 mil, but again this is completely changeable in the settings.

A little question regarding pinball machines.
I was on a trip to Germany for a week (the city of Bad Hersfeld) and the pre-last day I went with the family to their friend's enthusiastic pinball machine club.
I played quite a few of the pinball machines, but does someone know about these? I asked the guy and he said most of them were pretty rare:
Corvette (Chevrolet Corvette)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
an AC/DC machine (said it cost him €20000)
Black Knight
Time Machine
and that Pin Bot thing people talk about.
They also have a completely mechanical pinball machine. (And also plan to make an all around cocktail table emulator machine - their 25in1 and a Defender arcade just don't cut it anymore.)
(Excuse my English, I'm a Czech person)

AC/DC machine could have been one of the limited editions like the Luci or the Back in Black edition.

Corvette is a George Gomez Williams game. Never seen one in the USA so it might be rare.

Terminator 2 is one of the least rare machines ever, 17,000+ made.

Black Knight is another big seller, many made (5 digits). Would have sold more but Steve Ritchie's CAD designer went over to Bally and stole his layout.

Time Machine is Data East's first machine from 1988. Not bad.

Pin-Bot isn't too rare but is precious. Has a bagatelle table on it as a feature. Designed by a Romanian expatriot. Symbolizes man's fusion with machine, finger to flipper. Also the Voyager space program.

are there colored DMDs? Sounds like a nice middle ground between the old orange and the LCDs.

I personally don't want to see LCDs on pinball machines for a simple reason. Pinballs are physical entertainment. Their appeal is in mechanics, physical interactions on the table. As such, video mechanisms should be as minimal as possible. Video is still useful to convey more complex rulesets, countdowns and stuff, but a DMD is sufficient for that. That's my primary reason to not "improve" on them. They get the job done, and going beyond that is distracting from the actual machine. I do not consider that distraction an improvement

Like those DMD mini games you get on tables like Creature/Getaway/Star Trek. They could be far better on a screen, full motion video/animation instead of 20x16 clips from the 90's.

You could have the full rules viewable and easily displayed on the screen etc etc

What do you mean you don't have time? You could walk up to a machine and press the flippers a few times and read the rules nice and clearly page by page before putting in a coin. You can do on certain tables on DMD but one agonizing line at a time.

>> No.3266512

>I guess it isn't pinball in Creature from the Black Lagoon where you have a fist fight on the DMD
it's not. Pinball is that physical thing with the balls and flippers and other gadgets that's sitting idle while you stare at a video game.

>What do you mean you don't have time?
balls are moving, timers are counting down. I don't need an in-depth explanation of the rules, certainly not when playing a machine for the hundredth time. What I need is be able to tell at a glance what game state I'm in. Pattern recognition on a monochrome display is pretty good for that

>You could walk up to a machine and press the flippers a few times and read the rules nice and clearly page by page
that sounds messed up. Rule summary belongs on the flyer or the machine, everything else can be mentioned in-game. Also, how do you read the rules while someone's playing on the machine?
