No, but I bought every new PC Gamer (US) mag I could, when I was actually lucky to find them. Absolutely loved the mag and its editors, not to mention the discs.

>> No.3173787

Game Informer in the 2000's but that's not retro.

I did purchase tons of Nintendo Power over the years, mostly from 1998-2002.

I got GamePro from 2000-2006 (a bit after the point where they fucked it all up iirc). Their 200th issue spectacular or whatever was what inspired my interest in retro gaming.

>> No.3173885

Never bought them, but I used ot get given bags full of them 2-3 times a year by a friend of my Mum. Her son subscribed to pretty much everything going, even a couple from the US (britfag here) so I ended up knowing pretty much everything, albeit a couple of months behind.

I remember one UK PS1 mag did not give a fuck and used to post topless fanart of Lara Croft etc.

>> No.3173947

In Hungary for some reason all the major gaming magazines started to attach a full legal games to each issue. I started to buy since then, later I subbed because of the lower subscription price. Surely those games were not the newest ones, but it was very cool back then to get older game+magazine for a low price. For example in the PC Guru in 1999 Fallout 1 was attached. When I got broadband internet connection years later, I cancelled the sub. It was a magical era, I miss it.

>> No.3176153

I consumed a wide variety of gaming magazines as a kid actually. I subscribe to Nintendo power from like 1999 until it ended comma and I even had a subscription to Nintendo Power Advanced for its three issues. I had a Game Informer subscription from I think 2001 to 2014, but that isn't retro. I subscribed to Game Pro for a few years I think in like 2004 to 2007? And I had also been a reader of Tips and Tricks and so I received the big codebooks in the mail. My parents bought me a variety at newsstands, EGM, Pocket Gamer was a big one in the GBC days, Official PS Magazine during the early 2000s and the official Sega magazine during the DreamCast era.

>> No.3176156

Nintendo Power's the only gaming magazine I've ever subscribed to.

Sure was shocking to see it finally go.

There was no subscription for it, but I used to buy this PC magazine every issue.

Every 3 months it would come out with 3 CDs : a disc with around 70-100 playable demos, a disc with HUNDREDS of sharewares of all sorts (including games) + maps and mods for games (useful when you had no internet connection, played tons of DN3D maps that way), and the last disc would have 3 (older) full games.

This was the shit in the mid to late 90's. Made me discover HUNDREDS of games. We eventually stopped getting it because our computer wouldn't keep up.

I mean get a load of this, that first discs had the demos of : Witchaven, Terminator Future Shock, Rayman, X-Com, Warcraft, Fatal Racing, Destruction Derby, Mortal Kombat 3, Megaman X, Mech Warrior 2, Descent 1 and 2, BC Racers, Little Big Adventure, Command&Conquer, Body Count, Cannon Fodder, Putty Squad, Tek War, Earthworm Jim, Fifa 96, Wipe Out, Need For Speed, Micro Machines 2, Hexen, Screamer, Sam&Max, Terminal Velocity

HOLY FUCK my mind is still blown by how cool this stuff was. And that was JUST the demo disc of the FIRST issue, okay?!

>> No.3179638

EGM in the early 90's, and Gamefan from start to almost finish. I loved the enthusiasm from Gamefan, but they thought a little too much of themselves and once the main guy was ousted it was downhill after that. In the end they started hanging out in our chatrooms and took our "retro" gaming (16-bit and arcade boards, at the time) a little too seriously and started incorporating that stuff into their mag, probably not the best decision on their part.

Incite Magazine until it died, then GamePro for a while, then Play Magazine (US) until it died. Currently subscribed to Game Informer because, as shit as it is, it seems to be one of the better magazines out there.

Lets see I was subscribed to...

EGM.
EGM2.
Expert Gamer.
Game Now.
PSM.
OPM.
Game Players.
Ultra Game Players.

Never was a fan of Gamepro. I use to buy Nintendo Power off the racks at book stores, along with UK gaming magazines like Total and N64 Magazine.

Favorite writers from my magazine day would probably be...

Chris Slate, Bill Donohue, and most of the people at EGM/OPM/Expert Gamer.

Back when Myspace was young, I actually got a chance to chat with Bill Donohue. (No-one knew or cared who he was, except me.)

I sent him a message and told him I was a fan of his 800 pound gorilla bit from PSM. (Remember that?) He told me something funny. He said the inside of the gorilla costume was very itchy, so whenever they made him wear it, he would itch like crazy.

Bill was super nice to me, and honored that I messaged him. Nice guy.

I really really liked incite. It sucked when they went under. They really got me into PC gaming.

Other than that, Nintendo power and EGM where my go tos.

>> No.3180883

As I noted in >>3180875, quite a few.

Tips & Tricks, Playstation Magazine, Play, Nintendo Power... Shonen Jump and Newtype had pretty great game sections, as well.

I also had a quarterly that was specifically about RPGs, but I can't remember what it was called. It was cool, though. It only had three or four issues.

All of it's gone now, though.
