Me? I would say around 2006. I got the Wii at launch, and that would remain the most contemporary home console I would ever get (never got the HD twins). Never got any DS or PSP games past 2007 (with the exceptions of the DS Chrono Trigger port and borrowing Kirby Super Star Ultra from a friend).

I did end up getting the 3DS, but I only own around eight games for it.

During the second half of last generation, when I got the Wii, is when I started looking more and more toward the past because contemporary stuff was interesting me less and less (Wii itself was basically just a continuation of the Cube, so I was fine with it). I got lots of titles off the Wii's Virtual Console and PSP's PSone Classics.

I also bought Super Nintendo games, PlayStation 1 games, Game Boy Advance games, single Nintendo 64 (Dr. Mario 64 of all things), a single NES game (Zoda's Revenge), a single Game Boy game (Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters) off of ebay during the HD twins generation.

Prior to my slide retro fagdom, I used to buy NES and a few SNES games from GameStop during the the first half of the last decade. I also got the Virtual Boy of all things.

I like old shit, and I can't talk with anyone my age because all the normies are getting married or having full time jobs, and all the people who still play games grew up playing games with a high definition than my TV. Freaking Wii is the most recent thing I have, and no one in the wild has played that in years, and the only ones playing the 3DS still are those that play Waifu Emblem 1 and 2 and other animu shit.

So when did you become a retro fag and why did it happen to you? How do you cope with the fact that almost no one likes playing or discussing oldshit in the real world?

Nah, I just did not have much interest. I still play a few things from current-gen but its all 3DS stuff. With last gen, the only current gen stuff I played was with the Wii. I also played DS and PSP stuff, but I stopped with those consoles after 2007, and the PSP became a replacement PS1 for me.

Had the NES and SNES growing up, but the PS1 Rpg's have always captivated me. I've never really gotten over them, despite always playing new consoles up to 7th gen, it's just the ps1 Rpg's are always what I feel like playing.

I mean, I was actually alive back when 3rd and 4th gen consoles were relevant, so I guess I never "became" a retro fag.

but if oyu ask when did I consciously wanted to play retro games despite owning modern systems, that was around 1996 or 97. Had PS1, N64 and Saturn, but I went and bought a NES again (my old one got lost or something).

>> No.3177393

If you are an actual "retro fag", you never left retro games in the first place. Your favorite childhood games will always get played every now and then.

>> No.3177395

One thing to mention is that although I play a lot of software from stuff from the 90's, I am also fond of a lot of GameCube and GBA stuff (particularly the latter) even though it technically isn't considered retro around here (even though both of those consoles stopped receiving support nearly 10 years ago).

>> No.3177402

Tricky question. I've always played games on whatever console is current so I guess i never really became a retro game player, I've just always played games.

However, since moat consoles have their cool exclusives, i usually kept them around, so I've always had my Saturn plugged in sitting next to Ps2/3
I play them about equally I guess.

what are your favorite gamecube games? I just got one recently and am unsure where to go beyond brawl, mario party/kart, sunshine, wind waker, and timesplitters 2

>>3177417
I think you mean Melee. Brawl on the Wii was crap (unless you get yourself a 2GB SD card and download Project M, in which case Brawl becomes better than Melee).

As to other software to get, get Metroid Prime 1 and 2. If you have the Wii get Prime 3 as well. Probably the best trilogy ever in gaming.

I would also get Resident Evil 4 if you have never played it. For this I would recommend the Wii version, waggle actually does greatly improve this game. But you can't go wrong with Cube version either (although it lacks the lackluster Separate Ways found in the PS2 version, it has better graphics than it and better controls, but the Wii version has the best of both worlds).

Twilight Princess is probably the inverse of RE4 in that I prefer the Cube version over the Wii one (TP was originally supposed to be just a Cube game), but the Cube version is pricey.

Speaking of Zelda, Four Swords Adventures is massively overlooked. Its an extremely fun game even if you play it by yourself, and nice throwback to a A Link To The Past. However, you are going to need at least one friend, two GBAs, with two GBA-GCN link cables if you want the most out of this game.

This segues into another party game. WarioWare: Mega Party Games is a criminally underrated multi-player game. I had many fun times playing this one with others.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is probably the pinnacle of Mario RPGs. If you enjoyed the original Paper Mario or even Super Paper Mario, this game is a must.

Luigi's Mansion is fun, but short. Its probably not worth the price even back in the day. However, it was definitely fun.

Pikmin 1 and 2 are also great fun real time strategy games.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is probably the best game in the series aside from the first internationally released one. However, unfortunately, its extremely expensive now, and copies start at around $90 now. I feel fortunate I was able to get a copy back in 2006 for only $15.
Got spoiler tags wrong.

Anyway, here is the remainder of my recommendations.

Animal Crossing is a very fun game, and has a certain charm that the later installments lack. It also doubles as a NES compilation, and there is a total of 19 NES games that can be acquired in it. However, four of them (Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., and Ice Climber) can only be accessed via an Action Replay unfortunately). The other 15 NES games are:
1. Donkey Kong
2. Donkey Kong Jr.
3. Donkey Kong 3
4. Donkey Kong Jr. Math
5. Wario's Woods (the last NES/Famicom game Nintendo ever published, its an extremely underrated game, and something that is very overlooked)
6. Punch-Out
7. Balloon Fight
8. Excite Bike
9. Clu Clu Land
10. Clu Clu Land D (the last game Nintendo ever published for the Famicom Disc System, and the only release this game has ever seen outside Japan. It also never saw a re-release on any of Nintendo's Virtual Consoles).
11. Pinball
12. Baseball
13. Soccer
14. Golf
15. Tennis

There is also F-Zero GX which is not only the pinnacle of F-Zero series, but arguably the best racing game of all time. Its a masterpiece that has flown under the radar for most people. Its challenging to unlock the AX pilots, but aside from that this is probably among the Top 5 best games Sega has developed since going third-party and it was surreal seeing the Nintendo and Sega logos alongside one another back in 2003.

If you are using the Wii as your GameCube. There are also a few recommendations I can make here. Aside from Metroid Prime 3 and Resident Evil 4 as a I mentioned earlier, be sure to check out Project M if you have Brawl, probably the pinnacle of Smash Bros.

Speaking of pinnacle, the two Super Mario Galaxy titles are the apex of 3D platformers. New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Kirby's Return to Dream Land are also both great as co-op 2D platformers and you can even get your casual friends to enjoy them.

>>3177475
A few more Wii recommendations:

Mario Kart Wii is a good title to get if you enjoyed other games in the Mario Kart series. Some say its weaker than other games in the series, but its by far the highest selling installment in the series.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves is also great fun, and the last proper game in that series. The same goes for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, its the last game of the classic Fire Emblem series (discounting the DS remakes), and its good, though like Path of Radiance its expensive (though not greatly as so with PoR).

Super Paper Mario is also worth checking out if you enjoyed the first two games to the Paper Mario series. However, like WarioWare and FE, this is basically the last solid entry in this series (along with Metroid, why did so many Nintendo series decide to die in 2007?)

Last thing to mention is Xenoblade which is probably the only "great" JRPG released on last gen's consoles (PS3/360/Wii). Its a great game, though as with Radiant Dawn it is pricey to get.

I hope these recommendations help.

The problem is that even though there are good modern games, they primarily exist on consoles I don't own or don't appeal to me. An example of this are the modern FE's. They appeal to the "muh waifu" crowd and now have overt fanservice in their games like petting and stripping for the onsen. Contrast that with something like Thracia 776 which was a Super Nintendo title made in 1999 whose focus was packing on new strategy elements to the series.

Also, Frog Pride World Wide. REEEEEEE

When I was 3 or 4 my dad brought home a work computer for a night or two. He let me play around with it a bit and after that I got obsessed and kept asking for a computer. As a compromise, my parents bought me a ZX Spectrum for very cheap from the classifieds in the local paper. This was in 1992 or 1993 so the Spectrum was pretty much retro when I got it.

I guess that's where my love of old games started. I'd go through the stack of copied games on poorly labelled cassettes that came with it. Even when I was shit at a game (because I was 4) I could throw in another tape and still have the novelty of seeing what was on it. It could be blank, it could be an awful game, it could be Jet Set Willy backed with the best of Madonna. I eventually got a 486 for christmas a year or two later (probably another PC my dad got from work) but I still have fond memories of that Spectrum

Lower class as a kid, so when I got into vidya I asked for the cheaper console, which means I was always a generation behind. So, I've been sorta retro from the beginning.

When I finally had a cheap computer that could run emulators, I could binge on all those games I had missed. It was a truly awesome period.

Now, while I could buy any game I wish, I'm just no longer into it. Life is unfair.

I don't play games specifically because they're retro, I play games because I think they look good or know they're good. Playing a retro game I missed out on now is no different to me from playing a PS3 game I missed out on five years ago. I was in kindergarten when everyone else was playing Quake and DN3D so many retro games in the 90's were before my time, and I thought nothing of it. It wasn't until around 2012/13 that I started to pay attention to older games. The sprite-based 2.5d graphics interested me and eventually I got round to playing half life, then DOOM and it just flowed from there. Now everytime I play a modern shooter I keep trying to circle strafe and jump over enemies etc and I now realise that modern FPS games kinda suck

Do any of you have friends that play retro games? I don't know anyone who is genuinely interested older games, they get put off by the graphics

By that guideline, the mid 90s, then, when I discovered emulation. I was never into consoles newer than Playstation until DS came out. Then wasn't into that anymore when Android phones came out four years later and people started making emulators for it.
On my DS, I mostly played emulated games, though I admit that I did enjoy a few obviously non-/vr/ DS titles.

Well, got the Atari 5200 in 1983. Next was NES. Bought SNES myself as soon as possible to get the sweet All-Stars sendaway. Had to get that N64. Rented Super Metroid in 1994 but had to hit it again in 1998 via emulator. Had to buy Zelda for N64 since I didn't have Voodoo power. Pirated every single game for Dreamcast since it used GD-ROMs instead of CD-ROMs and I knew how shit CD-ROM based game systems were (low resolution FMV isn't gaming). Fat PS2 on release so I could play Playstation 1 games and see what all the fuss had been about. Got an XBox when I was wrongly informed that it could emulate properly to a TV, put every single retro game and system on it. Wii is the real deal for this purpose. Never went back to collecting dusty cartridges because that's a pursuit for impoverished individuals and Somalians with no money. Somewhere in the last 10 years I became uncool for having always been into "retro" games while others became cool for embracing them of late.

When the N64/PS1 generation of consoles came out and was mostly complete shit.

Yes. 20 years ago. Saw the horrible shovelware PS1 garbage and the bland Saturn stuff and was very wary of the future of gaming, then took one look at Mario 64 and the near-universal acclaim for that pile of shit and wrote off gaming's future for good.

And 20 years later, despite trying tons of games released since, I have yet to be convinced I am wrong.

I'm probably echoing a lot of the sane sentiment here, but the late 90s when emulators such as NESticle, ZSNES and Genecyst dropped and I was finally able to play the games I missed out on growing up with those systems and even games that never left Japan courtesy of fan translations, though I already had the bug in me, always asking if I could try any outdated system gathering dust when I was over visiting family or mates.

I was just a general computer and video game enthusiast up until then, but at the outset of the 3D era I got sort off miffed that 2D gaming (and animation for that matter) seemed to be on the way out along with the arcades. I thought back then and still think that the over emphasis on graphics and gameplay emulating the third dimension is a tragic mistake that cost us entire genres of interesting gameplay trends and philosophy and, if you couple that with the loss of the arcades, it sort of feels similar to the state of 2D animated films these days. Or, if you prefer, how film has all but been yanked away from film makers in favor of digital without the studios bothering to ask if that 's ok with them.

That all said, instead of just jumping onto new trends like most of my more casually inclined friends did, I hung around online on sites featured on classicgaming.gamespy.com and the like, delving further into video game history, emulating all those arcade titles I had not real access to and eventually, I started to fall back on the systems curve because I was having more fun playing trough the likes of Bahamut Lagoon and all those Neo Geo classics (remember Neo-RAGEx?) than Gears of Duty or whatever.

The last console I bought was Nintendo DS, and I keep meaning to R4 it, but already wrestling with a backlog the size of two or three life times, I'm not in any hurry to.

Pic related is the first "system" I ever got. Wish I still had it.
