I was a Nintendo kid, but I want to try what other companies had to offer, so I'm thinking about buying a Mega Drive (Genesis).

I looked through the libary, watched videos, read descriptions, looked at screenshots, etc. for everything that sounded interesting and came up with the following:

>Sonic the Hedgehog
>Phantasy Star II
>Outrun
>Mutant League Hockey
>King of Monsters
>Altered Beast

Ist this a good list for starters?
Anything good I'm missing?
What's the maximum I should pay for these games?

My only experience with Sega are their offerings on 6th gen consoles after they stopped making hardware and playing a MD once with a friend who rented one. Some Turtles side scroller (anyone know what I'm talking about?)

>Phantasy Star II

Personally I'd start with PS4, unless you like grindy RPGs

>Sonic the Hedgehog
Get 2 and 3 as well

>> No.3176471

I was also a nintendo kid, but i recently discovered gunstar heroes and have been playing the shit out of it. it's a bit pricey if you're buying physical copies, but it's a truly awesome game.

Altered Beast isn't that good (I like it but I have to be honest), especially compared to the arcade game.

King of the Monsters is cool if that's your bag, I would bet the Neo Geo version is much better gho. Never played Genesis Outrun but I figure it can't hold up that well compared to the arcade.

Conspicuously missing: Shinobi series, Streets of Rage series (all good games, don't start arguments about best one).

If you're buying actual carts, consider the Sega 6-pak.

Of course opinions and personal taste factor in, so... do your thing

>> No.3176481

Super nintendo games are very beatable for the most part. But sega requires you to git gud. I would suggest getting 6 pak and beating every game on it

Sega 6-Pak sounds great, but apparently not available in Europe?

>>3176481
I got the impression the SMD was much more arcade-y than the SNES, is that true?

Semi related:
Their cheesy but awesome ads.
They tried really hard with that "cool alternative" image, huh? Kinda clever, considering their main competition was Nintendo.

Yeah definitely more arcadey

Looks like Mega Drive has Mega Games 6 ad there are 3 volumes, if they are cheap go for it. 6-pak is great because collectors don't really like it so you can pick it up in the US for like $6.

Found this one for 10€.
Mega Games 1 is a Moto GP game, a soccer game and a puzzle game from what I could gather from a picture.

Gunstar Heroes
Golden Axe
Revenge of Shinobi
Streets of Rage (1 and 2)
Sonic & Knuckles
Earthworm Jim (slightly better than SNES version)
Alisia Dragoon
Castlevania Bloodlines
Toy Story (again, slightly better than the SNES version)
Batman Returns (completely different game to the SNES title of the same name. Probably the best batman game released until Arkham Asylum in 2009)
Shadowrun (completely different game to the SNES title of the same name)
ToeJam & Earl (best way I can describe this is a roguelike)
Bonanza Bros (especially if you have a buddy to play it with)

gunstar heroes is necessary.

I recommend Phantasy Star IV over II.

And CD if you score the Sega CD add-on.
And Spinball if you get it for cheap I guess.
And Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine as well of course.
And the Power Base Converter if you want to play the Master System games.

That's really limited for starters but I'm guessing they're a bundle deal or you're picking them up pretty cheap. As others have stated, PSII is grind heavy so you may want to swap that with PSIV if possible.
