What are the best four-player N64 games? Any hidden gems?

I'm having an 'N64 party' on Friday and I have an ED64 loaded with a full no-intro set, so anything goes. I already have the obvious ones planned, like Mario Party, Smash, Mario Kart, Bomberman, etc. I'm just wondering if there's anything else cool out there that I may not know about.

Goemon's Great Adventure has a 4 players mode but I think you need to beat the game first, if you have an ED you might be able to download a save file or something (though I recommend actually playing through the game yourself on single player, it's a great game), the default is only 2 players.

The MP is hilarious and chaotic, you can piggy back your friends and stuff.

I JUST built a PC with a N64 emulator exclusively to play 4 player games. I tried pretty much all of the 4 player titles one by one, though some didn't work. Here's my suggestions:

BATTLETANX (or the sequel, it seems like a fun shooter without being a nightmare to control)

SNOWBOARD KIDS 2 or 1 (if you ever get tired of Mario Kart)

And then there are the amazing shooters, that work very well but have nightmarish controls. I got good at it and it feels natural, but it's hard for newcomers: TUROK: RAGE WARS is amazing (I keep hearing how Goldeneye is amazing but this one seems as good as an early Unreal Tournament game). Also JET FORCE GEMINI (but here the controls are even more nightmarish).
Also DUKE NUKEM ZERO HOUR has a very decent multiplayer.

I am the only person who ever cared, but DONKEY KONG 64 has two different battle modes, and I liked both.

BANJO TOOIE apparently has a First-Person-Shooter mode for multiplayer (!) but I never got to try it.

CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY has a lot of confusing modes that boil down to the usual Deathmatch, capture the flag, etc. but with looser 3d platformer controls. Also it looks good.

WORMS: ARMAGEDDON has a n64 version, and well, it works, and it's the best Worms game.

Also, never underestimate MARIO GOLF, it gives a really long experience, almost a "campaign" feel, and it's throughly enjoyable even for me, and I hate golf.

Want a co-op adventure?
I never managed to get GAUNTLET LEGACY to work, but HEXEN on the n64 has a perfectly functional co-op mode. The graphics look pretty grainy though.

PERFECT DARK is another go-to shooter, but for some reason Turok caught my attention and it seems to be actually the best multiplayer fps on the console.

I haven't managed to try Puzzle Bobble games, or The New Tetris, but I think they have a multiplayer mode for 4. Maybe even Wetrix does (all good games).

I'm sure Mario Tennis is great too but I couldn't get it to work, and F-ZERO is very very fun in single player.

Some of these games really benefit from also having a save file, in Mario Golf you can't even play as Mario without going very far into the game!
Also, when you say "Bomberman", remember Bomberman Arcade, the Japanese exclusive that has several multiplayer minigames (other than classic Bomberman) available.
The menus are super easy to navigate even in their arcane moonspeak.

Posts like this really make me wonder what the point of /vr/ even is anymore. Nearly every single topic that comes up has someone giving a quick, hostile, dismissive response. Have a question about anything retro? "Uuuh, why didn't you use google, faggot? Why are you on the retro board asking about retro things? Faggot."

It didn't used to be this way, either. What happened to this place?

I was referring to Bomberman 64. Didn't even know about Bomberman Arcade. Is that a more classic-style Bomberman?

It is EXACTLY classic style bomberman.
To be honest only one gamemode other than this is worth playing and it's a Tetris-Puyo Puyo style game with falling bombs.

Also, to find the games I used the Wikipedia list and watched the reviews by this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEkgb2KbLFo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFyYcFrqHDk

Checking out his channel made me remember that CHAMELEON TWIST too has a multiplayer mode for 4 that looks interesting, but I couldn't even try.

Good rec, even just two-player multiplayer is fun for this game. I have found memories playing this with my cousin.
>>3167874
Got some good games here. I prefer Perfect Dark's multiplayer out if every shooter on the system personally. I really need to get the GBC version t unlock those extra weapon and cheats.
Also never played Battletanx despite many telling me how great the games are, really need to look into it.

Personal favorites include:
DKR as best kart racer
Beetle Adventure Racing for stupid 4-player battle and fun 2-player arcade racer.
Bomberman The Second Attack is apparently a rare n64 title but extremely fun and wild multiplayer.
WWF No Mercy is stupidly fun, I love the Aki Wrestling games buy this one has the best customization options.
If you want classic 2D fighters, KI Gold is okay and if you're more of a fan of MK, MK Trilogy and 4 are great titles.
Ofc you also got basic essentials like Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros, and GoldenEye.
Also one title I always wanted to play was Vigilante 8 which looks to be a decent replacement for N64 owners who wanted to play a Twisted Metal like game.
I know I'm missing out some games but I'll keep replying to give you any heads up on some good games.

WTF does that have to do with anything? Like all the other boards /vr/ is full of underage shitposters asking the same questions over and over most of which could be answered by a quick google search. You must be really new here if you don't see that and understand it's a problem.
Unlike some other boards /vr/ actually did used to be good.

>> No.3170708

Since when was asking questions a problem here? OP just wanted to talk about good multiplayer N64 games, which is a pretty legitimate retro game topic. What else are we supposed to talk about around here?

I never had any problems making threads just like this one a while back. They always bloomed into friendly discussion, recommendation, and collaboration. But now they all quickly devolve into stupid arguments from self-proclaimed ""oldfags"" like you, eager to shut down discussion and sling insults instead of just let people talk about fucking video games.

>>3167842
To actually contribute to your thread instead of being part of the cancer:

Are your friends into puzzle games? Because N64 is pretty much the best multiplayer puzzle console ever. Four-player Dr. Mario, Tetris, Panel de Pon (Pokemon Puzzle League), Puyo Puyo, and more. Lots of the N64 versions of these games had neat extra modes that were never seen again in any subsequent release.

Since before you arrived, obviously since this is all news to you.

When the first few underage shitposters started a few threads a couple summers ago people didn't make a big deal about it. Now that they're starting multiple threads daily asking questions that could be answered in 10 seconds on google or recommend me some good muhrio gamez threads it's gotten too far out of hand to stay silent.

>> No.3170916

>>3170860
Right, I'm sure YOU aren't the shitposter here, trying to derail an otherwise decent retro discussion thread just to whine about how new everyone except you is.

>recommend me some good muhrio gamez
You know full well that isn't what this thread is. OP already dismissed the obvious casual answers like the Mario games and asked for hidden gems. Every top 10 N64 list you find from Google is nothing but the well-known first-party games and million sellers. So no, this is not something that can be answered with a ten-second Google search.

At least you're bumping the thread with every reply you make, which seems to be bringing in legitimate responses to the topic. For someone who seems to hate this day-old thread so much, you sure are helping to keep it alive.
