If you copy and paste the brutal doom starter pack shortcut and then edit the file names in the shortcut properties it's really easy, that's what I usually do then you have the shortcut ready for when you play it again plus you can drag and drop things onto the shortcut folder. You can also create a folder named skins and put things in there so it doesn't have to be reloaded every time you start so it goes faster.

Step 1: Download the .zip file from the link provided previously
Step 2: Unzip the .zip file
Step 3: Open ZDL.exe
Step 4: Go to the "Settings" tab in the ZDL window
Step 5: Add your source ports (G/ZDoom, Zandronum, Chocolate Doom, etc.) by hitting the "Add" button under the Source Ports/Engines field
Step 6: Add your IWADs (doom.wad, doom2.wad, chex3.wad, etc.) by hitting the "Add" button under the IWADs field
Step 7: Swap back to the "Main" tab in ZDL
Step 8: Use the drop-down menu to select your source port, then select the IWAD you want to run from the list
Step 9: Hit the "Add" button at the bottom of the External Files field to select your mods of choice from wherever on your computer you keep them
Step 10: Hit the "Launch" button in the lower-right corner of the window to start playing

Mods are loaded in order from top to bottom; select a mod and use the Up/Down buttons to re-order them once they're on the list. If you have multiple mods that you like to use together (DRL Arsenal+Monster Pack, Colourful Hell + LegenDoom, Smooth Doom + Smooth Textures, etc.) you can save them together as a .zdl "playlist" to make future sessions easier (check the "ZDL" button at the bottom of the ZDL window)

You are editing sprites with commands that are put into TEXTURES lump.
Basically put you tell that Texture "SQUIZZY" is a part of texture(or sprite) "XYSSI" cropped from x1.y1 to x2.y2
Then you tell that texture "SHIZA0" is a "SQUIZZY" pasted over texture "BLURRY" at point x3.y3.

tl;dr: TEXTURES lump is a way of frankenspriting and combining textures by issuing commands to the engine to copypaste instead of copypasting yourself. It is more limited in use, but looks like anons got a hang of it. You can also swap colors there. SLADE can be used to visualise and simplify the process.

I love this idea, but I have no place for it in Blastmaster.

If that guy who made those wonderfully absurd weapons, like the bonesaw and the flamethrower, is still here, he needs to make his normal shotgun fire spinning chainsaw blades, it'd be pretty simple to make a low arc flying floor bouncing ripper projectile, then take the chainsaw blade from the pickup sprite and make it spin around really fast.

Also if you wanna make the punching attack of the bonesaw look better, take the punching animation and mirror it, so it looks like the revenant is throwing left and right haymakers rapidly.

You also need to make the altfire of the bonesaw fire a mini revenant rocket

good-looking map with decent interconnection but the gameplay is frustrating, apparently intentionally.

nice textures, a combination of every popular nineties wad's themes makes it still Look Like Doom but expanded a lot. i thought having a light on COMPTILE to throw it into relief was particularly effective.

unfortunately i had to cheat through the part with the three archviles, two pain elementals, and eight cacodemons. this made me lose enthusiasm for playing the remainder of the map.

a small map in which you must berserk punch 38 imps, 8 demons, 4 spectres, 4 hell knights, 3 revenants, 2 cacodemons, 2 lost souls, and a partridge in a pear tree. this takes place in a duo-textured maze, and an outdoor courtyard with a cage in the middle. then you go up some stairs and find the exit. there are no secrets other than the sector containing the exit. there are a number of slightly annoying sound effect replacements, especially the punch which you will hear a lot. it requires the gothic textures to be loaded.

Making some progress on this casltevania shit. Fooled around with the whip most of the day.

I checked out the mega-math example whip wad from last thread, tested it out and decided I wanted to do it my own way: with DECORATE

Making a whip attack throws a missile chain link, which spawns a whole lot of chain links behind it, then dies. The chain links then quickly warp back to the player (this part happens to fast, I need to slow it down so you can see the whip being retrieved.)

It seems to work pretty well, and you can aim in different directions, fire on the move, and its extremely simple, no ACS or trigonometry required! just 2 actors in decorate and a couple of sprites.

Even whipped up a shitty title screen

And I don't think building management would like me a lot if I started running water down the stairs just to see how it behaves so I can copy it in a doom map.

It's one of those things I've probably seen a million times, but never truly watched/observed, cliché

And I get what you mean with the blocky thing. That's "just engine/visuals limitation", whereas the liquid is a matter of how much effort you want to put into making it "act realistic"

So since making an RNN that creates actual Doom maps is a bit beyond the scope of all my skill, I figured I'd try an already existing RNN for music and train it with Doom music. To me, the bit of reality is interesting to me. Alright, so in the HOXAR website people reported seeing BLACKROOM sims in real life. That means that either BLACKROOM affects your brain, or you're trapped in the simulation and don't know it. That's super cool to me.

Also, the spooky mansion photo for the haunted mansion holosim on the HOXAR website was of a mental institution noted for its Ha-Ha walls, which are walls that don't look that tall, and look like you could just climb over it and be fine, but what you don't see is the huge ditch on the other side making it like 20 feet tall. So there's this illusion that they aren't imprisoned, and I'm sure that has a lot to do with the game.

Plus, the game will allow you to control the environment, like remove a crushing ceiling, and I KNOW that it's going to take that away to incite panic and show what's really in control. You still have agency, it's just you're much less powerful than you thought.

It can be really cool I think.

DemonSteele isn't in a happy place right now, with the input bug refusing to cooperate and not giving me any leads whatsoever.
I've been basically following a pattern in the past couple weeks of "opening up the ACS, looking at it, staring at the code, tweaking a few values, compiling, testing in-game, yup seems fine to me, send to a friend, yup it's broken for him, go back to staring at the code, close it and work on something else".

Considering how nobody on fucking Zandronum plays it, I've honestly been considering just bumping up the next release to Zandronum 3.0 so I can bypass the input bug completely and use a dedicated special attack button.

I'm going to support the Kickstarter, even though I am disappointed that it's just Romero pitching a concept (although with some cool art by Carmack). I'd say it'd be good for everyone to give a little bit of cash to it, because the possibility of this neat a concept existing is better than the Kickstarter failing, and the whole thing never existing at all. I believe in Romero, Carmack, and the whole team enough to give them a good chunk of my spending money.

I haven't even looked at any doom code in almost a year, except for making a small test pk3 to ensure that I had GDCC working correctly.

I still intend to finish the platforms, unless ijon and synert complete a version that meets all the goals of the project before I get around to it. This would actually probably be the best case scenario as ijon is much better equipped to test it in multiplayer than I would be. Is that good or bad? I've never cared about other kickstarters, but I really hope this gets funded and turns out to be a good game. It's got all the oldschool elements I want.

you have reduced the issue to a black/white either/or and left out of consideration the important issue of quality control. in other words: we are "on board" with "modding mods" as long as the result is not awful to the point of ruining the reputation of the original work by its association with it.

Okay this one took a bit of time to finish.
Gameplay wise it draws enemes to the beam which collapses and explodes after a second or so.

If you're here kegan, do you think you'd be up for a quick gameplay test of what I have so far? I'll need to really focus on the ACS/Hud now if I'm ever going to finish this in time. And you have insight about balance and stuff.

Not enough info for me yet. Nothing bad can come of hitting the 700k mark without additional information. John's heart seems like it's in the right place from watching the stream. He's just not getting anything from me without a more concrete sample of what he and his team have in store.

One thing I don't think has been mentioned here he talked about on stream was the actual production cost of the game. 700k isn't enough and he knows it. He's testing public interest so he can bring investors onboard later. I think Yu Suzuki used the same approach to get Shenmue 3 off the ground.

Yeah I think the failures of some major kickstarters to deliver, such as Star Citizen or Tim Schafer turning himself from the prince of adventure gaming to Video Game Hitler, have started making people gunshy over kickstarters. I mean Overload just barely squeaked past it's limit, and it has a playable demo and a all-star team of people including the president of Volition, so not some fly-by-night studio.

But hey if funding slows down, Romero can always sell .jpgs of demons to nerds!

Kickstarter is inherently a very risky platform because investing is inherently a very risky platform. Kickstarter just changes the hands from big corporates to the people, but the risks and problems with investment still are prominent.

You have to gauge whether the project looks good, is worth investing in, and whether you think the delivered promise will be worth as much or more than the spoken promise.
In several ways, the fact that people have been seriously burned over Kickstarters and that people are so wary about things is a VERY GOOD thing. People need to work hard in order to make their product look like a feasible product, instead of promising empty dreams and writing down plans and ideas that might not happen.

I found this picture a long time ago on a random google search and I love it, because it perfectly captures the risks and potential with investment.

Problem is: No gameplay, even prototype, and all Romero had said are just meaningless buzzwords.

Also "unique feature of hacking/glitching the world itself" is not really that unique. Especially if it will be (and it will most probably be) contextual - that's literally Bioshock Infinite. Also Wash Dogs.

The closest i've seen to glitching/hacking the world around player was in Axiom Verge (amazing game btw), where you could scramble your environment, and most pieces/enemies reacted differently, while it all actually looked like the game had really bugged out (shuffled and broken sprites, switching color palettes, appearing compression artifacts etc.). For instance you could turn rockets fired at you by certain enemies into health.

So, it all ammounts to: Bullshit and Backstory.

>so you're saying that half of the team that made doom reuniting to make an new fps is not newsworthy?
hello, newsposter and >>3166457 here. what i said earlier was borne of a desire to avoid repeating the experience the threads had with doom4. you may remember the newspost used to feature doom4 frequently, but i stopped this abruptly a few months ago, as discussions of it would quickly descend into fights, ruining entire threads.

i realised i was giving implicit permission "you can come shitpost here about this subject" by having constant updates about it in the news post. i couldn't stop people talking about it, but i decided i would encourage them to come here no longer. (a few weeks later we started to see mass post deletions and even entire threads disappearing.)

thus we find ourselves in the situation today. the reaction to romero&adrian's game announcement has been mixed, and the announcement itself controversial, to say the least. the game is emphatically Not Retro and i don't think /vr/doom wants to go through another two years of speculation over little concrete information, with all the inevitable trolling, baiting, and shitposting that comes from being on 4chan.

nevertheless, you make a good point, i think i was too hasty earlier in suggesting the news post would not mention the new game at all. i think what i really intended was that i would not feature every single little bit of information that surfaces about it over its development period, as i had done with doom4 over the latter half of 2015. i think there's room in the news post for the occasional non-retro non-doom-related item of sufficient noteworthiness and interest to an audience of classic doom fans, without turning it into a non-retro game's development blog.

I played some Hell Revealed with beautiful doom and I have mixed feelings about it. One the one hand, I LOVE the sound effects. Special shout-out to the *thwap* sound you hear when the beserk fist explodes an enemy into gibs. I use a separate sound replacement when I play with smooth doom, but beautiful doom's sounds are better. The SSG having doomguy pop both shells into it is great too. I also like what the author did with the fireballs and shell casings.

Now for the things I don't like. Some of the cacodemon deaths make their eyes go wide. I wasn't sure if I'd killed them or not.

Next, the rocket launcher appears to have an explosion sprite similar to smooth doom's duke-style explosions feature. I don't like it because the impact sprite is too large to see the enemy behind it. This is especially important when fighting goats, because with beautiful doom, it isn't always clear when they're winding up an attack when I'm rocketing them. The explosions cover it up, whereas they don't in vanilla and default smooth doom.

I just got back from playing E1 of Back to Saturn X, and I'm guessing that it's the lack of atmosphere, but the gameplay doesn't even feel that satisfying, and the maps' ambushes feel predictable and everything so far. Does it suddenly get a lot better afterwards ? Or does it remain long ass 300 monsters map with little to them ? It's a good WAD so far, but I really don't get what makes it so fantastic. You bet! As I detailed here (http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37064&start=420#p902881)), Pillowblaster has redone the shotgun to be more in-line with the rest of the weapons. DoomNukem originally did the idle frame but since lost the model, but PB came to the rescue!

I will be squishing the idle frame just a tiny bit, thanks for the feedback!

Yeah. IMO, doom newbies really need to play through a few maps from the top 100 (covers maps from 1994-2003) before delving into modern stuff, so as to get an appreciation for the older eras of the community. Otherwise they'll potentially end up falling into the mindset of "doom mapping was never good until 20XX" because of being only used to modern standards, and finding anything different too alienating.

So, you want to make a custom PLAYPAL?

Have I got some mildly interesting news for you.

http://3dlutcreator.ru/demo/3DLUTCreatorDemo.zip (In the demo you can't save, but for this it doesn't matter at all)

Open the Grading-Guide.png in the 3D LUT Creator. You've probably noticed that it's just a bunch of Doom screenshots, but what you may have missed is that it's all software and that the Doom palette is in the bottom right corner.

Adjust the colours using the options under the tabs for Channels, Volume, A/B, C/L, Curves, 2DCurves, and Mask. You can click and drag on the image to adjust the colours as well.

When you're done, zoom in on the palette (viewing 1:1 doesn't always show you every pixel for some reason) in the bottom right, screenshot it, crop it in Photoshop or a similar program, resize to 16x16 (nearest neighbour), flatten it, and save as Photoshop Raw.

Bam, new PLAYPAL.

Maybe you'll want to create your own Grading Guide with screenshots that feature more colours, this was hastily made.

You can find some tutorials for 3D Lut Creator on YouTube if you want to do more than dick around.

Oh I'll probably upload a beta here on thursday or so, but a large part of the mod is still yet to be implemented (but just a bunch of acs basically so it'll go pretty smoothly) so I'd rather wait with a public (beta) release until it's more representative of what I want.

In the meantime I'll pm you a link today if it's okay?

I'd use whole-image offsets to fake a bit of recoil though. Can even do it in the DECORATE itself without touching TEXTURES.

Do you faggots think developing games is free, or that money grows on trees?

If there's no publisher that's interested, or there's no publisher that wants to do the game on their terms, then crowdfunding is the only realistic option.
