ITT: Games you play and beat over and over again without thinking, you just know every nook and cranny from playing it so many times that it feels natural for you.

Genesis version, right? The SNES game is too linear and repetitive to have much replay value.

I just can't get enough of this game, I have absolutely no idea why.

It's definitely fun to play, but there honestly isn't a whole lot to it. I'm pretty sure that if any of the devs knew how many hours I put into it they'd be shocked that I was able to find enough in there to entertain myself for as long as I have.

Megaman 2-6. I do play 1, but only occasionally. I probably re-beat them all at least once a year.

SMB3 as well.

X-COM. I don't know why I keep playing X-COM, I've already played through so many times to know the optimal way to handle things and nothing so out of bounds happens to me anymore that I have to veer off the optimal path very much. Secure the skies with plasma cannons, farm E-113, slowly build a Cydonia team.

There are many retro co-op games I played using online emulation with a thread, used to learn to rock some of them together.

We've played Double Dragon 2 (NES version) and Streets Of Rage 1 and 2 more than a hundred times each. After a while, we'd usually just quit straight away if either of us would happen to lose a life, because that would mean that the current playthrough isn't worthy and we'd stopped having fun anyway.

As for singleplayer games, as a kid there are 4 NES games I'd play and replay ALL the time : Duck Tales 2, Tiny Toons Adventure, Astérix and The Smurf.

Then came Duke Nukem 3D, Resident Evil 1,2 and 3.

Duck Tales 2, RE1 and RE3 I have played a hundred times each. I could probably still draw you a full map of Resident Evil 1 by memory alone, including enemy and item placement for both characters.

I assume you're playing Ironman Superhuman (ideally in OpenXCOM for automatic enforcement of Ironman rules (I've seen some people pretending Geoscape reloading is allowed) and non-glitched Superhuman) already. If not, do that. Next challenge I recommend is Single Base Only, this greatly increases difficulty and makes base defenses much scarier.

Single base reminds me too much of modern X-COM. I'm actually looking for something that focuses more on the overall geoscape development.

I started to plan a mod, but I don't know enough about modding open X-COM to do it all. The changes were:

Much smaller detection ranges and operational ranges of craft.
Increased speed for craft such that normal interceptors can keep up with more types of craft.
Interceptors are tougher but do less damage -- using multiple interceptors is encouraged.
Enemy UFOs have more difficulty retreating in combat.

Localized research: Researching something in an American base for example doesn't grant it to other bases right out, but gives them a research speed bonus.
Locational bonuses: Different tech trees for different regions, for example, Russia has different small arms and weapon platforms than Australia. All regions get a few designs unique to themselves.

Aliens have to complete several missions over a longer period of time to cause a country to leave the project rather than a single infiltration mission.
Aliens never forget the locations of your bases once discovered, but send mostly terror ships on a one to three month basis with the occasional battleship.

Essentially, it's like playing several games of X-COM simultaneously with unique fronts that have various technological phases. The equipment available to each region also changes how each base plays, and the more regions you keep in the project, the more unique equipment you'll have to use for base assaults and Cydonia.

I think I have never beaten it without cheats, as I was getting shot down every minute or so. I think I made it to that beach mission before I started using infinite lives. Maybe I should try it again some time.

When I was a kid I would constantly replay Yoshi's Island. It was practically automatic, I didn't even have to think. 100% all the levels, start a new file, do it again. If I didn't like the game I rented that week it was always back to Yoshi's Island.
Haven't played it in years though, it'd be interesting to see if there's any muscle memory left.

That reminds me, I never finished MMZ2. I beat the first one, got halfway through MMZ2 and kinda stopped. I planned on beating them all in a row but ended up playing other shit, that was years ago now. I better get to it soon.

Also is it just me or is it really hard using the whipchain thing in MMZ2 to swing off of shit? It took me a long time to get used to it, especially with Castlevania 4's whipping and whip swimming mechanics stuck in my head.

I know! The hardest part of zero 2 was the chain hook. It took the fast pace game and slowed it down to a slow methodical stop. I'm sure for puzzle games it would be cool but not a mmz game

Final fantasy tactics always gets a play every year, since it's by large and far my favorite game. Everything else is on at least an every two year if not longer wait to be replayed.

If they could just make direct offshoots with the original FFT for me I'd be a happier human. Yes, I'm the same fag that always gushes about the game.
