We are talking years or decades here for that. Even the poorly hand-calibrated laser I'm using has several years clocked on it now.

And for every single Saturn I bought so far as "broken, can't read disc", I just had to tweak the laser for a few minutes, and they could read discs fine after that.

I think I only got two dead lasers in a Saturn, ever. And out of those, one of them I ruined myself (slipped my hand and fell down, didn't read anything afterwards).

Electrolytic ones, sure. But he was suggesting solid state/tantalum caps, which cost quite a lot more. I don't think the Saturn had terrible load times at all.

A few games do. But I don't think the Rhea helps them?
It's primarily the RPGs with special moves.

Any game where you normally hear the motor moving the disc as it loads, that part is completely cut away from the loading times with Rhea.

The more excessive loading a game does, the more this will help. Stuff like RPGs will benefit from it since they do frequent loading, but even games using CD Audio will load faster, since the games have to first move the laser from the CDDA to the Data track, and then back to the CDDA.
Some games load instantly with Rhea because all they do is moving the cd laser around.
I remember some games even starting the music too early than they'd otherwise do.

It's a minor gain but it can make a lot of difference in some games.

I think for me the "what's the point" is more about preservation of the unit. It's nice to have one less thing that's likely to fail and expands the survivability of the hardware. I also own 3 so converting one isn't a big deal.

Does anyone make something like this for PS1 or PS2?

I have a couple laying around with ded lasers, it would be a fun experiment if they exist.

I know you can use Free McBoot on a PS2 to do pretty much the same thing, but it's fussy with compatibility and shit in some cases so it's not perfect.

I've never had any issues with free mcboot.

I load all my ps2 games off an hdd plugged in via the ethernet/hdd adapter. I even played Yakuza 2 in its entirety off a usb thumbdrive while waiting for my hdd adapter to come in.

Is there a good tutorial for getting started using Free Mcboot? A friend of mine gave me a pre-made memory card with that, but I'm having trouble figuring out what it can do and how I can use it, either to back up my games or play downloaded ones. He couldn't help me because he got someone else to set him up with his PS2. I got a random 500GB IDE HDD from an old PC and plugged it into my network adapter on my PS2, but it didn't seem to make any difference to the software, I can't figure out what I need to do to get the ball rolling.

I've looked up guides, but what I found seemed either based on old versions (I have 1.96) or they're written with the implication that you have a certain baseline of modding knowledge already.

You're probably looking for the wrong thing. It's Free Mcboot not FreeMcloadwharez. You'll want to look into configuring OPL to play your wharez.
Also not retro.
