I always see a "retro review" everywhere bashing this game for "not a fighting game.".

same here... I mean sure, the game is super simple, but what would you have done for a jaws game back then? It's certainly fully functional, and the mechanics, although a bit strange at times, aren't horrible.

It's fun to play and beat in 10-15 minutes every now and then.

I don't know how is the DC version but PC version for this game is actually pretty enjoyable, specially with a wheel. Probably the complains on controls for console version would be solved using the wheel instead the regular joystick

The plot was shit.

Why was I killing jellyfish?

Because they might have shells, and shells can be exchanged for goods and services. It's like you've never even been to the beach. Luckily for you, a marine biologist just happened to be perusing this thread and could inform you.

Because LJN, say what you will about a majority of their library being complete shit, but there were decent games in that stream of shit, at least passable as "okay".
I like Jaws too but will understand if people dismiss it from the LJN logo alone, or screenshots/gamplay looking too simple and boring.

>only marine biologists go to the beach

Surely, marine biologists have to be smarter than that.

>> No.3165326

All of those LJN games were pretty good time killers.

They obviously weren't Mario Bros tier classics, but they're a lot more fun than memesters that watch AVGN and have never even played them give them credit for

Elm Street, in particular, is a decent game. The only thing that really sucks about it is the weird system for entering levels, but other than that it's a solid action game.

Shadow of the Colossus didn't have you trying to kill only one Colossus.

I like Jaws, fun little game.

I also enjoy Hydlide, but the music in the NES version is fucking horrendous. It's also pretty quick to blow through, once you know what you are doing.

I'm a huge fan of Friday the 13th. I hate watching people play it and get killed immediately because they don't understand that the kids have different speeds or jump heights, they don't know jumping increases weapon and item spawn times, they don't pass weapons around, they get lost in the fucking cave because they don't know the fucking trick (look at the fucking rocks in the background, they reveal where the doors are, you don't even need the flashlight), they don't know how to fight Jason...

The indoors music is haunting and melancholy as fuck, I've always loved it

Jaws is probably the only decent game that LJN ever made. The end part where you have to stab the shark with the boat is super lame, but other than that the game had a neat format. I feel like you could make a game LIKE Jaws, with it's random encounter, sea exploration mechanics and but just adding a few little things, actually make a really good game.

Like, if there were more things to buy and upgrade, and more stuff you had to harvest in order to get those things, that would do a lot to make it a lot more interesting. You could add more bosses than just jaws and make it so that locating and defeating certain sea monsters was more complicated than just waiting for them to come get you.

I think there's pretty decent game to be had there.

Exact same thing happens with this game, which is actually pretty similar to the Ultraman game during the battle missions.

Although at least Evangelion 64 has some cult following because at the time it released it boasted impressive graphics, and it still looks pretty cool. But still a lot of people hate it.
