I'm not saying every Let's Play has an inherent value, but the concept isn't without merit. People tuned in to watch Bob Ross because the dude was seriously good at painting and in a short amount of time, using rudimentary tools, likewise, people check out shooters performing impressive feats of marksmanship on YouTube, as well as seeing someone speedrun Doom 2 in roughly 20 minutes

Sometimes it's cool to see someone who's really good at something doing their thing, and there's no reason that video games is detached from this.

I really like Stop Skeletons From Fighting (formerly HVGN). Derek is a cool guy and he likes to do a lot of research for his videos. Recently he started a series called punching weight, where he covers weird and ambitious games, it's been pretty fun.

I don't want to be that guy who posts his own channel here, but I'm trying to make something fun to watch, without trying to attention whore (not showing my face, not video blogging or making the channel about me).
And I know that while there are 10 people who make let's play channels where they only want attention, there are 1 or 2 that honestly want to make enjoyable content. I've come across a few that focus on the games being discussed.

So, I know 90% of youtube are people who want attention and money, but please don't just trash the other 10% who try and make something enjoyable to watch. Give it a chance, if you don't like it that's fine, but don't assume they are all after the same thing.

That's how I do my Let's Play for a certain PS1 game, because I recognize that my voice sucks for broadcasting.

Other than being able to toggle it on and off (which is great) it's good also because you have a lot more time to think up a good commentary and fix any factual mistakes after publishing.

This is harder than what retards on /v/ would think, ad revenue is incredibly fickle and unreliable, and YouTube takes like 90% of any ad revenue you make.

Unless you have a sizeable audience and viewership, you're not gonna make any money.
If you run a channel with roughly 10 000 subscribers and you average views somewhere in the ballpark to match, ad revenue is at the very best going to be small change, good luck at earning even $50 a month.
Patreon has grown in following because of this (and because of general online panhandling), as it can let a small channel like this operate and do things it couldn't afford to do, even if barely a tenth of your small audience give a few dollars a month, that's more than what YouTube itself would give you, and can eventually amount to a channel to explore projects that both the creator and audience really want to see.
Like, speaking for just general channels, they can be starting out with a shitty camera or microphone, but funding from it's followers can eventually help them get a better camera or mic, which is a direct benefit for the audience.
Depending on the type of channel, it can be used to cover expenses, gas money, travel costs, ammunition, paint, tools, what have you, things that ad revenue would never have been able to do for a small channel.

My point is, if you want to be able to make a living off YouTube, you need a reliable audience of a few hundred thousand, as well as content that you'll actually be allowed to monetize.

If you want to get rich, you need a PDP or RWJ sized audience, which more often than not, entails a lot of whoring and pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Most people who monetize their videos are either gullible fools who thinks they're gonna get rich or make easy money, or someone who just wants to make the kind of content they themselves would want to see.
