Yes, real hardware is the best, but if you can't even remotely understand the appeal of emulation then I have to call you an autistic elitist bitch. Plus it's not like you can just throw emulation into one big category, every one has a different setup, some are terrible, laggy, shit controllers, shit laggy monitor, but some even use crts for emulation.

A few exceptions in my opinion.

For stuff like 2600 I'd argue emulation is better. Fuck those controllers.

I'd argue that NES emulation is better if you plan on doing RGB or HDMI mods. That's too drastic a change to what the console was in my opinion.

emulation is better than the ancient hardware these days. You can't run ps1 or even ps2 games in HD and then there's money and save states of course. EMulation is so good that we can even emulate current gen hardwar (cemu)

No. I just spend money in an intelligent manner, hence why I'll be fully retired in less than a decade(31 right now).

Blowing that kinda cash on something I can do for nothing more than the cost of the electricity I use is dumb as shit. There's no justification for it. I don't play these games for nostalgia either. I play them because modern games are baby-piss easy and I want challenge. Also, older polys/sprites are cool-looking, especially upscaled in pure form on my PC's IPS displays.

I DO have a collection of old consoles, but only because they're dirt-cheap and I never use them so they'll never wear out except for dried-out caps which I can easily replace in an afternoon of soldering. Really, it comes down to two things: time and money. Since they're basically the same thing, we'll collapse it into just time. I simply do not have enough time, with a wife, child and full-time job, to collect and assemble original hardware, create an area to enjoy all of that in, collect the games, and enjoy the actual games. I choose to emulate because I can get up and running quickly and cheaply, save my state when wife/child needs me, and pick back up where I left off when I get more free time. When time is at a premium, you're hard-pressed to beat the benefits of emulation.

It really isn't super expensive. You don't have to collect all your games and keep them. You can buy a game, play it as much as you like, and then just resell it at the same price. Physical consoles, games and peripherals and screens take up a lot of space. If I had all the stuff I emulate actually in my house, I would basically be sacrificing an entire room, just to play games that I can already play quicker and more easily on my PC

3. Money

Ties in with space somewhat, but yeah. I'm not going to drop hundreds, thousands of dollars on stuff I can do for free, and do more conveniently for free.

And this is before we factor in things breaking - which is again, time and money to fix.

4. Controllers

A lot of the original hardware fucking sucks and you know it. The NES controller is beloved not because it's a great controller, because almost everything before it fucking sucked, and so did a number of things that came after it.

If I never hold another N64, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, or any of those shitty spectrum/atari/commadore joysticks in my entire life again, that'll be just fine with me. An xbox controller or some logitech knockoff of a Playstation controller will do a better job anyway, and I'd sooner use my PC keyboard over the clunky shit from the 80's.

The biggest reasons I advocate emulation are-

1. As I said earlier, my retro self would have killed to play emulated Genesis games. Sega Genesis w/ $30+ carts vs. emulator with dozens of titles instantly accessible. My 4yo self would take the emu any day of the week. I remember very clearly what it was like having limited cash for games in the 90s, having a shitty CRT to play them on, having the consoles glitch up whenever a contact lost contact, etc. There's nothing warm and nostalgic about any of that faggotry. If you guys were so concerned about accurate experiences, you wouldn't use video monitors on RGB on HD sound. You'd use one of those shit RCA televisions with a mono speaker like you had as a child, connected through RF. With a sticky mangled controller.

2. Emulators and roms are the only way we're likely going to have to play these aging games in the near future. The consoles and carts are going to start losing their transistors due to electron wear, and unless someone makes new exact copies of those old systems, emulation is what we're stuck with, so I wanna see it get done better and better.
Oh, and CDs? They rot too. Their polycarbonate layering starts to break down, causing warping that distorts laser beams and messes up disk reading. Eventually, even disc-based games are going to be kill. And this isn't too long off. 20 years or so. If that.

Consider the future before diving into the past. It'll save you time and money.

i emulate frequently on my laptop, wii console, tablet and muh phone. Its just so damn convenient especially when you can hook up usb cable or hotswap an sd card and transfer your progress to another device. You can get the peripherals you need if you want to feel that side of it, a SNES pad here, an XBOX pad there... i still play a lot using the arrowkeys and A,S,D. You have plugins galore, save states, online co-op/multiplayer servers for various (non-online gen) games,
the whole back catalogue of abandonware, hacks and of course your own "backup copies" available at any instance.

Dont get me wrong, if it was viable for me, if i had the time, space, to kit out a proper little mancave with some little museum pieces, then yes i would have those BUT the truth is i would only look at them, they would be in LED lit perspex cubes.. They would be talking points. Occssionally I would indulge 1 of my kids curiosity and introduce them to a console, engage them in some "back in my day" conversation about gaming and maybe (even let them play the damn thing) nah all joking aside I have enough comfy personal nostalgic memories from the periods when i owned and played them originally that emulating them is enough... I lived through that era. Unfortunately for fucktards like you I care about how I spend my cash and I remember how awful gaming could be on original hardware.
If anything, my PC and its emulators make those old games feel more arcade-like than the consoles that had to water the games down to play at home.

History is fun to read about and admire, but I don't live in 1993 anymore. I live in 2016, and my PC has a GPU with more memory than 60000 SNES consoles. I can play any SNES game that matters from start to finish with little to no inaccuracy, using a controller that's essentially like the SNES controller except it fits my adult hands properly, and I can play translated versions of game that never saw daylight here in the US.

And all I'm missing is a bulky blurry CRT generating noise and heat, and some bullshit about "clicks and switches" that mean nothing to me because I don't get an erection by powering up consumer electronics.

OP's thread quickly became #HardwareFagsTheTriggering

as said in a previous post

if you still own your own slightly yellowed sticker covered console(s) from way back when (the time-frame of that gen) if you still have a few dusty dog eared labeled cartridges or cracked jewel-cases and surprisingly untarnished disc based media that was buried somewhere in a crate with a load of RF leads and dusty 3rd party controllers more power to ya bro
if you had the personally had the foresight, maybe hoarding parents or just plain luck to have these things still box fresh in a basement or loft space then that's great
if your spending some quality time and introducing your own children to gaming through these things KUDOS 2 YOU SIR
you grew up with these things, this is your childhood and your memories
>YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY OVER 30 AND WILL POST A TIMESTAMPED DL
>YOU WILL PROVIDE A LINK TO A RESTORED VHS/??mm VIDEO OF YOU UNBOXING AT THE APPROPRIATE XMAS/BIRTHDAY
>FAILING PROVISION OF SAID VIDEO YOU WILL DELIVER A LETTER FROM THE PARENT/GUARDIAN/OTHER RELATIVE WHO BOUGHT/GIFTED YOU SAID CONSOLE/HOME-COMPUTER ALONG WITH GENUINE RECEIPT OF PURCHASE
hell even if you can borrow 1 of theses said consoles from your childhood or play a buddies that fine
if you personally and therefore subjectively like the aesthetic and style of the console thats all well and good

NOW
if your buying retro consoles, vintage carts, novel peripherals and CRT's to spend some quality time and introducing your own children to gaming through these things and share in what you did as a child AGAIN KUDOS 2 YOU SIR
if your buying retro consoles, vintage carts, novel peripherals and CRT's through genuine interest in the medium, or novelty factor or you are/were a poor fag buying that console your family could never afford and being good to yourself i hope you're content

HOWEVER
if your buying retro consoles, vintage carts, novel peripherals and CRT's for the purpose of dickswinging and/or perceived "investment", if your seriously trying to claim some kind of superiority over the emulated gaming community through your no doubt comprehensive knowledge of latter 20th century electronics and extensive personal library mass produced grey/black plastic in expensive boxes then your ego far outweighs your intellect
you're missing the point of emulation
the purists and autists will no doubt always justify and rationalise the exorbitant amounts of money paid for these consoles and out bid themselves into oblivion while looking down at emulators as casuals, heretics and unclean etc
again your missing the point of emulation community and what that brings to the table in the form of the netplay community, that should be self explanatory. readily available hacks and translations from the mod community, Are you gonna spend the time to learn the simplified chinese or kanji to play that game that wasn't released in your region???

And then there are the benefits of the actual emulators in and of themselves. save states, built in gamegenie/actionreplay features, the incredible amount of plugins to customise your experience, record your gameplay to stream on your channel or post elsewhere, the ability to play the same game on your PC, console, tablet and your phone and update your progress from the last device.

Utilizing the processing power available now in even your mobile phone to emulate a bug free flawless version of a system you 1 time owned and loved or getting to experience a bug free flawless version of a system you wanted to own while sitting on the bus, the train, taking a shit!!!!

IS THIS NOW A CRT THREAD?

there are those people who use the aspect ratio button of their tv remotes and switch to 4:3 aswell
you can talk about color accuracy and whatever else, you can be melodramatic about the authenticity of your experience as much as you like
not everybodys eyes have the same degree of natural accuracy in focus or even color definition
your red isnt neccesarily my red and so on and so forth
the same logic can be applied to the audiophiles too
and on that token what about those physically impaired gamers with differing needs and peripheral that only work on pc OS add quick button mapping and boom emulation

but anyway i have recent ditched my decades old 32inch CRT and the only reason i kept it so long was it was comfy (also it weighed a fuckton) lol

i play the same games on various flatscreens round the house and of course i see the difference, i dont find it too bad desu 1, if anything the slight alteration improves some games, 1 tv inparticular makes the games look very washed out but i can compensate and color correct. And if im emulating thats before ive applied any plugins and filters, etc etc

but in the end with the gaming it doesn't matter what your doing or how your doing it
its WHY were doing it
we love dem games

so what if i dont experience something or for that matter anything precisely and exactly the same way you do

blah blah qualia

also go ahead and buy a 4k/8k tv you blind muther fuckers lol

Sometime's people need to know there is consequences for their actions. Free will means a person can say what ever they want and a person can hit whoever they want. There may or may not be consequences for either of their actions. Someone probably won't get that upset over anything someone says or does. And a person probably wont be able to identify an average person with no piercings or tattoos well enough for the police to do anything about it. If they even bother with a simple assault. Exactly. If you assault someone because you didn't like their youtube channel or something you should know you're going to face consequences. Because that's not an appropriate way to act.

>that's how they were INTENDED to be played, you fool.

Holy fuck the games look just fine without scanlines and CRT flicker. Besides, it's not like you can't emulate using a CRT; I do. Now if you're saying people playing SMW using ZSNES stretched on a LCD TV should do something else I agree, but other than that all anti-emulation fag arguments ever come down to is:

"look guys this really hard to trigger glitch on this real obscure game produces this super minor effect not present on real hardware! Emulation is for faggots!"
or
glitches are/are not present on emulator thus making game harder to speedrun, speedrunner faggots cry a river of tears and curse emulation and all who use it
or
muh authentic experience

Some people emulate, that's fine. Some people don't, that's also fine. What's not fine is collectors and retro hardware enthusiasts constantly fucking bitching and degrading the emulation community because they aren't willing to shell out the cash for overpriced games and abandon the other benefits of emulation like save states(which have more uses than save scumming), filters, and other things. All because anti-emulation autists can't stop sperging out and bitching that it's not 100 percent accurate. 99% of the time you could play a game normally and not notice anything different from the game on real hardware.

As >>3140193 said in response to a claim people that emulate aren't retro enthusiasts, shut the fuck up.

I prefer emulation, even if I have the real hardware for pretty much every game I play. I just find it more convenient to hit a button in my PC and emulate it, and the differences, at least for the systems I own, are so small they are barely noticeable.

But that's not the point you see. If you want to buy real hardware, buy real hardware. If you want to emulate, emulate. If you want to do both, do both. I don't see why there's any reason to make a war about this shit. Live and let live, I just don't see the point of policing what people should or shouldn't do.

It goes the other way too, you know. I can't count the number of times I've seen a thread along the lines of "which game should I buy?" or "Are flashcarts/repros worth it?" and people respond with "Just fucking emulate, you autistic faggot."

I'm not the guy you replied to, I pretty much agree with you. I mostly play on original hardware, but if you asked me for a concrete reason I wouldn't have much of one besides "Emulation's just not the same!" I have no problem with people emulating either, and I do for consoles that I don't consider it worth my while to get, like the NES (having a good NES/famicom experience in the PAL region seems like way too much hard work) or N64 (I only really like Mario 64, F-Zero X and Wave Race 64).

But both sides of the emulation vs real shitshow are just as unbearable and and both sides tend to come out of the woodwork to ruin threads where nobody asked for their opinion.

It's not like you can't just emulate on a CRT and get great results, and if you go and buy a PVM and fuck around your PC to get output from it you got the ideal solution to the whole looks issue for literally any pre 5th gen arcade/console/PC game (5th gen/dreamcast emulation is garbage).

As a person who builds rgb cables and is planning on building an rgb to s-video circuit as well as having invested quite a bit in original hardware as a collector, I would still argue that emulation is just as viable an option for playing most games and you really won't be worse for the wear. Heck, even if you have the original hardware you can still be left with second-tier or lower fidelity even with the right equipment because you have a lower grade version of the hardware than some other revision.

Of course, I'm not actually writing this post in reply to the OP specifically since OP is just a standard troll post, but I would like to get these opinions out in the thread in between my swimming sessions in the sea of A/V cables and equipment that fill my room.

I don't even emulate but you sound like you need to chill. I can understand the idea that devs should be compensated for their hard work, but if you go and buy a game off of eBay or craigslist or wherever you do nothing to support the developer. That cartridge was already purchased 20 years ago. The only person you're supporting is the guy who sold it to you, and it's not like he put huge amounts of effort into taking a photo of some old junk he doesn't want, or worse, actively ruining the second hand games market by scouring flea markets for good deals to resell.

Even if you buy games off of GOG or the virtual console, I doubt any of the original developers get much from it. Chances are it's just a quick extra buck for the publisher and the people who actually did the work aren't being rewarded for their efforts.

As I said, I don't emulate, but in most cases I really fail to see any moral issue with doing so. I can see it with current stuff, but for games that are out of print you're not really "supporting the industry" or anything.

Take /out/ for example, they talk about what gear is good and what gear is bad, but at the end of the day their message is the same, "just get outside"

This board, however, is comprised mainly of elitist, closed minded people that are obsessed with keeping the board to themselves and not allowing for any kind of community growth. These people dont want anyone to play the games they love unless they follow their rules to a T and in the end all they accomplish is making themselves look like assholes.

I own a pvm and love the way it looks, but I also emulate the games I dont own and still enjoy them for the gameplay.

via emulation I've discovered some games that I could call my favourite, like Shadowrun and Super Metroid.

It's there, it's not as open anymore. Haven't seen BDSM general around much, though.

Also, the only thing about pictures isn't the board's ire, it's the mods. They seem to come down on threads if they don't have enough pictures in addition to the talk. There's actually a lot of modding that's been going against the users of the board in the recent past, as well.

If I get home late, did he get nervous? How did it impact his anxiety levels? If I roll a 1, he had a mental breakdown and needs 10 devoted minutes from me stroking him. If I can't do it, I shave 5 months from his life. If I roll a 2, he made a mess of the trash. If I don't punish him, the trash event occurs at 6 or below when late, but if I do punish him it stays at 2 but his anxiety levels rise and his trust and love for me diminish.

how fucking old are you? Are you a 3d gamer baby?

I swear this is why we need id checks on /vr/ to be exclusively 30+. Discussion will be far better and will actually comprise of people who GREW UP with what they're shitting on or raving about.

Why are you even on /vr/, kid? Fuck off back to /b/ or something. go watch pewdiepie or whatever kids watch on youtube.

I'm 21 but all I've been able to play for about 6 years is indie and retro stuff. I'm pretty sure the most recent game I've played lately is Diablo 2, and then Deus Ex. I haven't grown up with those but I can't play anything else right now, and I don't think I'd play newer AAA games if I could anyway.
And I don't watch let's players or whatever on youtube either, ffs. Am I not allowed to enjoy and discuss older games because I didn't grow up with them ?
Also, back on topic, if I could, I sure as hell would get some consoles back if I could, and make myself a battlestation, with gloves for my controller allergic hands idk.

I'm 19 but that doesn't mean I didn't grow up with /vr/ consoles. When I was a kid the only consoles we had were a Mega Drive, Game Boy and Playstation, and the first games I remember playing that stick out in my mind are games like Duke Nukem 3D and Dungeon Keeper.

I have a PVM and lots of old consoles. I also have an extron emotia which converts a 480p signal from the PC into 240p for the PVM. I still find that the best way to play old games is to emulate and output on a 20 inch PC CRT. It's much easier to have everything consolidated to the same display and output, rather than playing some consoles through RGB, some through S-video, emulating arcade games, etc. I actually sought out two PC CRTs of the same model(and two PVMs of the same model) for rotating. Nobody can say that I'm not dedicated to this shit.

Also I'm 23, and most of the old games I own were bought over ten years ago when I was more into old game collecting than I am now.

I wouldn't fault anybody for not going to the lengths I did. Most people would be far better served getting one of those 4k OLED TVs and using CRT filters. Old hardware and CRTs are just getting rarer, more expensive and more worn out. Old AV shit is a hobby in and of itself.

There's one simple reason why emulation is better than actual hardware
Two words: save states.
It's ridiculous how much better a game gets when you can skip all the faffing about with menus whenever you need to retry a difficult part

> It's not authentic. It's not real.

Well that's the point, isn't it? The past is gone, and before long most of the old hardware will fail, discs will rot, and it'll all be lost except for an incredibly niche reproduction market.

Emulation is an attempt to experience what you couldn't have, or what has been lost to you. Whether by your context, or the experience itself, it won't be what you want it to be.

Hardware doesn't last forever, data can as long as someone keeps one copy. Eventually the only consoles, Amigas and DOS computers will be in museums. It's important to perfect emulation on every platform to keep games alive. Maybe it's not "pure" but I'd rather be able to play a game imperfectly then not play it at all because it's too old or rare. Honestly I think every console manufacturer should release an official emulator like with what Sega's doing with the Genesis.

I play old games because I want to play old games, not because I'm an autist who thinks gameplay is diminished when I'm playing on a computer, when in fact it's usually enriched by the greater options available.

Reminder that playing a retro game now will be a fundamentally different experience than playing it in it's proper time period. While the game is the same, the world around it is completely different, you've experienced more and are different too, and a game you would have loved in '96 would be just another game in 2016.

I agree that conversation would be better if everyone was 30+, but growing up with with /vr/ games is less important than having played the games before newer ones existed, if you know what I'm saying? Like, if you're 50, you didn't grow up with a NES, but at least you'd have played the games in the 80s and 90s, before you played PS2 or something?
