Grinding and exploring RPG worlds can be its own trance-like state of contentedness, some people actually enjoy the whole package, people who aren't into them assume that they are played 100% for the story when in reality the story is totally predictable and juvenile and nobody would read a book/watch a show with the plot of the most successful RPGs

Good RPG stories are just ones that are charming in a childish sort of way.

What you said is correct, a combination of graphics, sound, story, and grindan make the genre relaxing and chill. Even if I'm doing an RPG challenge, its still chill compared to an actual action game. When I no-reload challenged Baldur's Gate, for example, there were only a few heart pumping oh shit moments scattered through the entire 7ish hour game.

They require a lot of planning and management to be particularly fun. Sure, you can solve any problem in a JRPG by grinding, but they're much more fun if you do only the bare minimum of leveling.
