/vr/ - Retro Games

Nothing but good memories with Mother games. And fairly recent memories because I first played the series in 2009, played them in release order.

Actually got into the series because of the music composer (Suzuki) and Itoi, as both of them wrote a song (Suzuki the music, and Itoi the lyrics) that's a favorite of mine. I went into the series without knowing of its cult following until some time after.

Weird seeing there's still people who haven't played mother for the first time.

I just recently played mother. I started with earthbound but i just played a little cause my little brother fucked up my save files and after that i wasn't with that drive to play it.
The one i finished recently was mother 3.
Godamn, what a fuckin masterpiece!

I'm going to play mother 0 before earthbound so i can keep some linear development.
Shame that mother 3 gave me the Porky spoiler

i wish i could get my self attached to mother 3, but i just couldn't. i'm a huge fan of the SNES system so i could play earthbound because i liked it. but because of how the GBA looks and me not really being a huge fan of it, i can't really get my self playing mother 3. i haven't even finished the first chapter. i am not trying to make bait or anything.

Both mother 1 and 2 had official novels written by Saori Kumi, a Japanese writer known for her noveks based on videogames. They're quite dark and are very different from the games, for example in the mother 1 novel it is from ana's perspective and starts at when ninten and loid arrive in snowman. Sadly there exists little info on them online.

Something weird just happened to me while playing my japanese Mother 2 cart.
On the file select screen I got this message, it says "What? I'm sorry but the adventure file 1 has been deleted" and it said the same for files 2 and 3 (even though they're unused).
Nevertheless, it let me continue my file normally, I saved, reseted the console, and the file is still there... whew.

I was left weirded out and in fear of it getting deleted for real.
Anyone else got this?

Had it happen to me with my US Earthbound cart twice. First time it wiped slots 1 and 2 (don't know how exactly) and the second it wiped all the slots but that happened because I didn't fully put the cart in the system and turned it on to a black screen. Happened before with a FF2us/4j

But did it always delete your saves? Ever happened to you that you get the message but the file isn't deleted?

Anyway I suspect this cart might have maybe battery issues because I bought it used, but all 3 file saves were empty when I first played it. It's normal with batteries that are like 20+ years old, but what weirded me out was that it didn't actually delete my file, despite getting the message.

Because the people who developed Mother 1 became Game Freak, Mewtwo is probably based on Gyiyg.

There's also a bunch of Mother series references and hints on Pokemon games.

Gotta admit, I teared up a little when I first beat Earthbound. That ending theme is full of feels.

Has anyone here played the translated mod of the Mother 1+2 GBA port? How much of Mother 2 is translated? Is it worth it just for Mother 1?

The mother 1 section has been fully translated and offers a much better translation then the nes prototype. As for mother 2 only item names have been translated as it would take the same effort needed to translate mother 3 to translate 2. Luckily earthbound is a very good and pretty accurate translation so this is unnecessary, there does exist a patch that adds back in stuff mother 2 had that was censored. If playing the mother 1 side I recommended getting the color restoration patch that removes the brightness seen in gba ports.

As someone who has never played this series, and currently has nothing better to do, where do I start?

Which version should I get, and what order are the games supposed to be played in? (I ask, because Nintendo likes to pull non-linear shit, and some posts here suggest as much)

There's also a patch for the NES version of Mother 1 where Tomato's translation was restored (for the most part, there's character limitations) as well as any censored sprites restored. Playing that is a much better experience. The GBA port has mangled music and lower resolution graphics.

You're supposed to play EB Beginnings first, then Earthbound, and then Mother 3.

The first game I played was Earthnound because I had a big CD full of SNES roms, so my order was EB, M3 and then Beginnings. The order doesnt really matter anon, my favorite game is Earthbound and that's what I'd say you should play first.

My time to shine. I would say it depends on you which to start with. If you are used to nes/famicom jrpg gameplay and ready tp grind try mother 1 first, if not try mother 2 where other then 5 minutes at the beginning you never grind.

For mother 1 I recommend the nes version with the patch in this post >>3138081 the nes prototype has a below average translation and the gba version has terrible color and sound.

For mother 2 earthbound is your only option, earthbound has a very accurate and well written translation so this version is completely fine. If you want a patch does exist that adds back some things censored from the Japanese version but nothing that important in my opinion.

Mother 3 is only playable through a fan translation, this is extremely high quality and probably better then what Nintendo would give us.

I also want to say they're all kinda different so even if you don't like one look into the others. Talk to people, experiment, have fun. Hope you enjoy them and that this was helpful.

Even with all its flaws i really really like Mother 1

So basically
Giygas wanted to become powerful enough to resist feels, but such a thing was impossible, and in his pursuit he destroyed his own mind?

Also when Queen Mary raised Giygas, was it on the spaceship that abducted them, or on Earth. How'd she have Ninten's grandfather/grandmother if she disappeared?

Giygas was scared of Ness and decided he must do whatever to kill him and the others. I imagine he took that form later on during the events of earthbound.

As for your second question that is really left unsolved and never really given anything close to an answer. I assume either had a child before they were abducted or George remarried and had a kid.

Here's something to think about, how did you find out abut the series and got into it?

When I was little, the first time I saw something about Earthbound was in a gaming magazine and they were giving a preview of it. I thought the idea of "the runaway dog" was funny, but that's it. Many years later, I heard about it again on another video game forum, and decided to play it.

Find out about the series, probably Mother 3 previews for N64 on magazines, for some reason I don't remember EarthBound at all from back in the day, so it was either Mother 3 N64 previews, or Ness on Smash.

My story is nothing special. A friend of mine lended me a CD full of SNES roms, kinda like a MAME type of thing. That's how I found EB, The 7th Saga, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Chrono Trigger,etc.

I haven't beaten Mother 3 yet (I'm up to the part where you start playing as Lucas) but the first 2 chapters had some decent feels moments.

I just finished Mother 2 for the third time (first on emulators years ago, english version, then on GBA in japanese, and now on the Super Famicom in japanese).

I honestly think mother 3 is the perfect game in terms of quality. It's not that any particular aspect of it excels over others (except for the soundtrack, best music you'll ever hear out of a ganevoy), but it's just so well made that it's very memorable

Never been a fan of Mother but was never against it. Even though I haven't played I see the charm of the series that everyone likes and that Catherine Warwick Album is amazing.

The NES proto translation is totally fine, I don't understand why everyone shits on it. It's pretty exceptional for an NES RPG, and fuck those easy-mode patches too. Play the game how it's meant to be played.
