DBZ Hyper Dimension uses a really unique "energy" concept in that damage to your character, and using your characters special moves both drain it, and it can be recharged at will.

It doesn't quite fit your criteria, but Budokan is pretty damn weird. It has a really complex but hard to get used to controls. A really fun game if you take the time to learn it.
