It's a metaphor for finding happiness aka the Emerald, through rings aka money. Sure it might be possible to get all the money you can, even if it seems impossible, but the point is you don't need all the money for happiness. So you shouldn't worry so much about it, as long you have enough.

But you DO need almost all of the rings for the Emerald.

The comic is commenting on the loop's literal impossibility: "Why's it set up so that I can't win?" It isn't, comicguy.

You can't base any sort of interpretation on a fallacy, which is something both the comic writer and you, anon, need to learn.

It's about the void that exists on the edge of the narrative in these games, and what it would be like if answerless questions had answers to them.

Like, exactly what is Robotnik even trying to accomplish? Why is he even doing it? What even are rings anyway? He's using animals to... like.... something something they're inside robots? Is that even necessary? The animals seem to be perfectly fine when you break the robot open, and Robotnik seems to be able to make perfectly functioning robots like metal sonic without putting woodland animals inside them, so like, what even is the purpose?

The comic takes the setting and motifs of the game and re-appropriates them into a relatable narrative, Robotnik is a brilliant scientist who has become crippled by his senility, but retains all the dangerous capabilities of his intellect, making it all the more absurd when Sonic has to confront him and clean up his mess.

However, even though Sonic puts an end to his chaos, by taking away his memento he also takes a piece of his identity, and the man can no longer remember who he was before or what he was so upset about, he just continues to engineer more machines as his mind is overrun with new ideas.

It's questionable whether the portrayal of violence as a necessity or foregone conclusion in the games is really necessary or that it is of any value to the experience of the game, but back in the 90s it seemed completely obvious that that is what we wanted to do?

Yet the question is, was it really, automatically something that interests us, and was it even the most interesting story that could be conveyed to the player through such an experience?

You can also ask other questions like, if the game has normal animals in it, and a human being like Robotnik in it, why then is Sonic an anthropomorphic hedgehog wearing running shoes? how does that even happen? it is roughly as absurd as having you ask "why is sonic the hedgehog's dad apparently a human?"

Robotnik is the villain, he's supposed to be unsettling in at least some sort of visceral way. It's a bit of the overall premise which motivates the player to defeat the bad guy in a climactic confrontation. But it is weird that you assign complex character motivations to a cartoon. Of all the things with complex characters and themes, Sonic seems to me intentionally absurd, in a childish way, if you get what I'm saying.

I assign complex character motivations to literally everything that has characters because any character that exists is born from someone's psyche, and no matter how hard they try those characters will always have a little more to them than meets the eye.

Also consider that as a 90s kid I had to put up with shit like looney tunes and ren and stimpy and rocko's modern life, and if I only went skin deep ever in my life I probably would have ended up retarded and a lot more disturbed and deranged than I already am as a result of the lack of consideration and self-awareness

it's perfectly fine for things to be simple, but it's a lot more fun when they aren't, because it gives them the opportunity to surprise you or catch you off guard, which is really the essence of comedy and wit

if you never bother to stop and think about things, you'll never catch the opportunity to laugh as hard as I do, and that seems sad to me

This one I don't get it. It doesn't even use any of the Sonic's actual plot, it's just this weird sad thing with Sonic characters.

It's funny that >>3125880 and >>3120368 have a small argument about this because deep down you're both saying the same thing.
>>3120368 carries a line of questioning that obviously goes outside the context of the sonic universe. >>3125880 says exactly that. Those questions are outside the fantasy constructions of these characters. So yeah, the comic goes outside the context of the game and it becomes weird, obviously. What I don't get is what exactly the comic is trying to say. If it's just that "Yeah if you break the fantasy it's broken!" then it's just shit. It's fucking obvious it will break. I'm hoping there will be more to the comic than that, but perhaps there isn't.

>>3125932
>I assign complex character motivations to literally everything that has characters because any character that exists is born from someone's psyche
Sure but they're also meant to exist in a given context, otherwise they won't work. If all this comic does is breaking the fantasy by asking questions outside the context of these characters, then it's just lazy.

An example of an excellent line of questioning taking into account the context the characters exist in is the Pokemon Cubone's origins theory. By not breaking the context, the line of questioning only enrich the Pokemon universe instead of breaking it to make an obvious point.

but the game itself doesn't really deserve that kind of deference, you act like the sanctity of it is being infringed upon or something but a videogame isn't anything that deserves to be worshiped or held pure. rather, the inclination to do so is itself something that should by dragged out and displayed for it's own absurdity.

>> No.3126027

>>3126018
All I'm saying is that it's lazy to choose to analyze a character without taking its contextualization into account. Plus it's not nearly as interesting as it becomes a pretty easy game isn't?

Of course the character will break in many parts. Context is something relevant to the character as much as his personality and motives. I'm not idolizing anything, I'm just telling you it's lazy and I'm sure you know it too.

the comic doesn't actually have anything to do with sonic anon, the artist's goal was not "make a videogame comic" he was not struggling with "how do I make art" or how to be creative. laziness has no application here because he didn't draw that comic for you or anyone else to enjoy, it was a selfish means of exploring his own identity as an artist and expressing himself through the art that he had been doing already for several years. Sonic the Hedgehog is just a back drop for the nagging questions of something like "why is the question of any deeper meaning or substance considered to be so discomforting in modern culture? why does it always have to be presented on the face or fed to us through coherent little explanations and plot links? why is meaning always buried or displaced by absurdity? what is the value of escapism?"

it's a selfish little story he wrote while depressed, thats mostly about writing a story exactly like it is. The reason that it's a Sonic comic is that Sonic the Hedgehog has a completely meaningless and asinine narrative with no message whatsoever. It's a story about something that has no meaning, and he's used it as the back drop for a story that has no agenda, only meaning.

Your mind only views things in the sense of punishment and reward, and to you you think he's doing a lazy job, but the thing here is that he's not even doing any job, and if that bothers you you should seriously ask yourself why you think someone needs to work to deserve to be alive.

I think you're right. It was unfair to call him lazy and hope a comic to be what I want it to be. Fair enough.
Just for the record I'm not bothered by it, I think I was just caught up in the argument. I actually really like the last two panels of Robotinik scratching his head and going away.

This whole line of inquiry has really made me consider the whole matter more deeply, and even consider the role of story and message in games.

The only thing I'd argue is that he choose Sonic completely arbitrarily. I think he started with Sonic, considered how importance Rings are considered in the context of the game, and was able to create the little story based on that. I mean it could have "Coin" and been about Mario, and a valuable coin instead, but that might change things too much.

I also like the final panels too. The way Robotnik is almost saying "I don't get it" is perfect as the reader's reaction.

>> No.3126067

>>3126053
It's about Robotnik trying to hold on to his fading memories of his father and "keep him alive" out of a partial awareness of his own insanity.

after losing the ring he forgets even the entire ordeal of trying not to forget. he just has a vague sensation that he forgot something but can't remember what. the scene at the end is him being confused because he's forgotten his own parents and only has a dim awareness that something important is missing, but he can't catch the thought.

the ring is symbolic of family and and the bond between two people. the entire reason we use a simple golden ring as as a wedding band is that it's circular shape supposed to symbolize eternity.

Robotnik, however, succumbs to nature itself and forgets even that.

We're not, but I didn't know how to continue the conversation without sounding spiteful so I left it (and I think analyzing Sonic like a classical text is just ridiculous, but whatever). We're in agreement that his and KC Green's interpretations are outside established Sonic canon, but what I was attempting to say (and where I think the other guy disagrees) is that the subtle themes or ideas they interpreted from the canon are more fan-fiction than anything intentional on the part of the authors of Sonic.

Here is the other guy's rebuttal.
>>3125932
>I assign complex character motivations to literally everything that has characters because any character that exists is born from someone's psyche, and no matter how hard they try those characters will always have a little more to them than meets the eye.
If you're familiar with Derrida's idea of deconstruction (lol), then you'll know that you can interpret a work of art in infinitely many ways when the author's intention isn't clear. We take it for granted from its context that Sonic is meant for children, because it's written like a game/show for children and features things which would be patently absurd if interpreted in an adult context. In the same way, we also interpret Crime and Punishment as a theme of Christian redemption because the author was a self-avowed Christian, and this is the most reasonable thing to conclude from available evidence in the story and from the author. It's not reasonable to assume that Sonic is an existentialist commentary on the motives of a mad-scientist and a talking hedgehog, partly because a) nearly everything the other guy said is manufactured (or not explicitly denoted in the games/show to the best of my knowledge) and b) this would imply the authors originally intended Sonic to be a nihilistic nightmare.

I'm not sure how you've gone so long without realizing that I was questioning and half-criticizing the creators of the game themselves and the culture that made it automatically acceptable without questioning for creating the game in such a fashion in the first place. Yes, there really is no deeper meaning to Sonic the Hedgehog, just a lot of handwaves and explanations with no further basis or characterizations, mainly a lot of empty space.

My point is that the empty space surrounding the game's narrative is more interesting than that narrative itself.

There's a reason for it being so common.

Carers cost a huge amount of money, money most people do not have. Also, people tend to be expected to take care of invalid relatives because "They raised you" or some sentimental BS like that. If you even DARE suggest not giving up your life, you are insulted, mocked, called selfish, and shunned for being a monster. Your life ends up being torn between freedom and a reputation for abandoning sick relatives, or giving it up for a completely thankless job nobody will help you on.

Over the years, that accumulates into anger and hatred towards the person who needs constant care. They can't help themselves for whatever reason, so you have to do it, and it's not what you want to do, and you will probably outlive this person.

Get a carer? Can't afford it.
Get a job? "How could you abandon him?"
Ask someone to help? "Umm I have somewhere to be."
Apply for carer benefits? Here, have some change out of the ashtray. Oh, and some bible-thumping types will admonish you because it's "its own reward" or some shit like that.

This eventually piles up and they abuse them as an outlet for their anger. That's why it's so common.
