What I really like about Metal Gear Solid is all the stealth elements it introduced. We had stealth games before it, but in MGS, you would lean your body against walls to peak around corners. Guards would be alerted and jam your radar equipment. You tapped on walls to create noise and lure enemies away. It was brilliant.

Metal Gear Solid also became the industry standard for cinematics, voice acting, character development, etc. It was a second-to-none experience for its time.

To give a counter example, Jak & Daxter's cam that is constantly the exact same distance from the character and follows the characters rotational movement gives me motion sickness so bad that I can't even play it.

My senpai. I purchased a blue gameboy pocket and was planning on picking up Pokemon blue. Wound up getting Link's Awakening and was not disappointed. Got Pokemon blue the next week.

Link's Awakening is arguably the best videogame of all time, when you take into account the limitations of the platform it was produced on.

This is a game with platform jumping, shooting, puzzle solving, RPG elements, minigames, exploration, subquests, optional areas, non-linear gameplay, 2 game modes (top down and side scrolling), and a powerfully emotionally evocative storyline, all presented on a 160x144 monochrome screen with 8k RAM and 2-channel sound. For me, no game ever made has achieved so much with so little and still remain compelling and enjoyable even to "modern" gamers. It's perfection.

Well, the combat system was quite good in my opinion, quite realistic actually.

You have your stamina/fatigue bar, which affects everything you do.
Then you have your skill level, which affects how well you perform at doing something.

So if you run around in the wildernes, with a low skill level and an empty fatigue bar, what will the end result be? You'll be someone who's out of breath, probably with aching muscles, who doesn't know how to swing a sword/axe/choice of weapon efficiently, so you're bound to miss and make glancing blows.
If you happen to have a high skill level and an empty fatigue bar, then you're again out of breath and have sore muscles, but this time you know how to wield your weapon so you're bound to hit your target more often.
And in the last case you have a high skill level and an unempty fatigue bar. You'll be well rested and proficient at using your weapon, so you'll propably not miss when you strike at the enemy.

For spells, it's pretty much the same, but instead of missing your hits, you're propably misspelling the wording or making the wrong signs for the spell and making them fail.

I actually just think RPGs have terrible combat and movement mechanics in general, but to be fair that isn't their primary focus.

But I disagree that stat progression and technical execution based combat can't co-exist. There's no reason such a system would necessitate gear being the only type of upgrade.

Except there is. You lean your body on walls, and when you reach the edge of a wall, the camera peeks around the corner to show you what lies down the corridor. Snake does not make a proper animation for the peek like in MGS2, but the player still peeks around the corner.

This Mario has my favorite physics from any 3D platformer. It's incredible that they got it right from their first try, and it's also sad that they have simplified it so much in newer tittles.

A flaw of SM64 is that many of its levels and missions are hit or miss. Some are great, while others are a real chore to get through.

Now, I don't know if OP is still here, but I played Metal Gear 2 very recently and I actually ended up considering it to be a better game than MGS.
There are more guards; the camera is more far away from the player, so you can have more awareness of your surroundings; the way in which Snake moves is incredibly smooth; and I don't know, but Zanzibar Land feels lke a better location than Shadow Moses.
As cons to MG2 I can say that it drops the ball once it reaches the second half of the game, it relies too much in backtracking and most of the boss battles are underwhelming.

In comparison, the pros that I see in MGS is that it has the "wow factor" of being in 3D, and has a better story, which was also quite innovative back in the day, and while feeling cheesy, it still holds up.
I still like it a lot though.

You don't have an unpopular opinion, mostly everyone who played that game ended up having good memories of it. It's a great game and honestly one of my contenders for best games of 5th gen. MNsG manages to be a fun game with solid 3D adventure gameplay, and it predates both OOT and Mega Man Legends.

It might just be a mario game (though they are short on story)

If I had to pick a candidate, I think I'd pick half-life. Despite being a linear FPS, it did things I still don't see other games doing to this day, and there was really nothing bad about it. I can't say that for any other game. MGS was very, very good, and was a bit better in one way: it was more of an RPG and really did require more thought, but it was chock full of bland coloring and wasn't really "fun" for the most part.
