Not sure I'd call RoH a Doom-like, isn't it more advanced and puzzle focused? It had FMV sequences too I think.

>>3101462
Pretty rad, as far as I can remember, though I haven't played it since I was 5 or 6, I'd probably be able to appreciate it better as an adult, but I don't quite know where to find it, or how it runs on modern systems, probably needs a DosBox

Best Doom-like. Great flow in all the levels, and fucks with the player on occasion.

It's good, and kind of unique. The AI is super dumb, though.

Yeah... my thoughts exactly. Sure it has first person shooter element, but it's more like a hybrid action-adventure game overall, with survival horror and FPS elements, and a huge focus on story with its FMV cutscenes.
It was a rather innovative game with big goals, and calling Doom-like is a little reducing.

This being said I recommend Powerslave/Exhumed (PC DOS version) and Redneck Rampage Rides Again in Arkansas, the sequel to the first Redneck Rampage, which imo are two of the most underrated Doom-era FPS.

No. It would walk directly towards you in a straight line while shooting bursts. Doesn't matter if a wall is in the way, it'll walk with it's face pressed up against it. Most enemies are like this in Future Shock and Skynet.
In addition, you receive damage while in physical contact with enemies. So if you are right up in the grill of a T800, your health drops really quickly.

>Map is a 4-8 way symmetrical affair, no one has managed to map it out, so you're on your own.
>Have to collect 16 brains before you can carry on
>have 14 of the brains
>Every time I fire up ROTH I wander around for half an hour, get frustrated and give up

I dont mind a good maze, but this is ridiculous. I'll never finish the game like this.

I really hate shit like that, in any game. Mazes are fine, but to make them that fucking big and tedious is just sadistic.

Then there's shit like the Green Dam in Phantasy Star 2.

Shadow Warrior could've been up there, but its balanced pretty poorly.

Which is why I'm talking about Rides Again, the sequel to the first Redneck Rampage.

Rides Again in Arkansas fixes most of the flaws of the original game, and on top of that has new enemies, driveable vehicules, some excellent level design, and I mean some of the best the engine ever got from official releases, technically speaking.
Look at the factory level, it mixes sector based and sprite based structures to give a feel of true 3D, and at the same time mixes the engine's shading with lighting/shading directly applied on textures and sprites to give a feel of dynamic lights.

It's hard to get a good picture of it because that room is very y-axis oriented but you get the idea.

Sadly most people stopped at the first one and don't even know it got a sequel.

The add-on by Sunstorm Int., Route 66, is also pretty good in that regard. it does not "fix" the games' flaws, but it does a great job at hiding them.

I just started playing it and I have to say its amazing. really captures the feeling of being a tiny human against endless robots, and running for your life. Pretty difficult too, until you realize its no doom, and you'll need to use your head to survive, instead of running in guns blazing.
Great atmosphere, and the briefings are cool as fuck.
