I would recommend finding a mod to disable vertical mouse movement (when you move the mouse forward doomguy runs forward and its fucking annoying). I tried to get novert but I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist anymore

I think the best mod to experience the game with though is Smooth Doom which just adds more frames of animation to everything. Adds something nice without changing the core gameplay at all.

Personally aside from the main games, I like Final Doom and No Rest for the Living
Master Levels is a mess though, it was poorly handled on ids part and just contains 20 pwads. Some of which are gimmicky and aged poorly.

I mean, nowadays, I always play with mouselook and autoaim disabled BUT I remember the old days of playing doom with just the keyboard. (Wish I had known you could play with mouseaim back then, but then again, I came from a console background, so playing pc games was an adventure in itself. Dont know if I could have wrapped my mind around using TWO WHOLE peripherals to navigate)

Doom had mouselook since day one, though you seem to distinguish mouselook and mouseaim, for some reason.
There's no autoaim. It's just that despite the visuals suggesting elevation, all computations for the game are planar.
As such, any "sourceport" with mouselook or autoaim is a good indicator that it's not a sourceport.

FreeLook is when you can look up and down.

Quake 2 has this, Quake 1 does not (You have to type+mlook in the console to simulate freelook) Open up a build engine setup.exe or Quake 1's options menu and you will see that the definition of mouselook I am using is the one used in the games themselves.
