Resident Evil is 20 today, Any no Resident evil memories thread? Or is it because we're always talking about Resident Evil on here?

The knife in RE1 is actually the second-strongest knife in the series, first being Code Veronica. A knife in RE1 does damage roughly equal to the handgun, and does more damage than it when used against the dogs, hunters, or the plant.

It got nerfed to dust in RE2.

So, explain your stance logically... do you think RE4 should have had pseudo-3D 2D environments and tank controls?

>or does RE4 represent the most REish 3D game we'll ever have

I don't have time to go through the list, but to say 4 didn't carry over a ton of elements from 1-3 is simply very incorrect. You're simply confusing the reality of 3D vs 1-3s painfully time had passed 2D tank controlled parameters.

If you e.g. took 1-3 and remade it exactly as a 3D game... It just wouldn't work. The changes in 4 were necessary and nearly perfect.

No, 4 is the least resident evil in the series (Giant stone statue chasing you? weird midget who looks old?) where as 5 finally shows us why Wesker is how he is, it expands upon umbrella's end and origins, it made the plagas feel relevant instead of completely out of place, it does an unbelievably great job at tying together all the loose plot threads for Chris, Jill, and wesker, it takes us to africa and ergo ties in dead aim. Plus the stuff with Spencer is great too.

What more did you want from an RE5? it basicaly fixed the series, just a shame that since then, all they've done is make more RE4's, as in, bullshit standalone stories which don't progress the plot, and have basically put us back to where we werre before re5, but worse. Why are you so offended? I said I like the game a lot, it's one of my favorite games. "It's not like other Resident Evil games" isn't an insult.

The older RE games were about undead zombies and focused on puzzle solving and item collecting. They were survival horror games. RE4 used basically human enemies and was mainly about killing hordes of them while walking forward towards the end of the game. It's even divided into chapters that recorded and display your number of kills.

All I'm saying is if you called the game "Battle Zone: Madrid" we'd never suspect it was supposed to be Resident Evil.

It might be because it got me early but I loved the premise. Zombies, mutants.

Anyone here actually played RE1 without knowing it was a game with zombies? The game doesn't really spoil it, so unless you heard word of mouth or read a review, you wouldn't know back in the day. There are no screenshots of the monsters on the cover or back cover, and the manual also doesn't specify at any point what you should expect in the mansion. I still can't claim to actually LIKE the first Resident Evil, even though it's arguably one of my favourite series and probably one of those things that played a huge role in shaping me as I grew up.

It's just way too slow, spartan, and wooden. All the elements are there, but it never really sucks you in the same way 2 did- It's a puzzle game with added zombies, really, it only manages to keep the horror vibe up for the first couple of hours, and then you realise it's just going to be another two hours of backtracking and inventory management.

That first time you meet a licker in RE2 though... I can still remember how pants shittingly terrified I was watching the FMV. I was playing it one morning before school in my pyjamas and I remember shaking while I tried to eat my cereal. Fuck knows why my parents allowed me to play that shit.

Lol at this shit throughout this thread.

This place is wall to wall reddit know nothing casuals now.

>but but RE4 is too differnet from the previous

>but but it should've been more modern

I swear to god.

The 2D pseudo 3D style was outdated as hell by the time 4 was being planned.

They kept the tank controls to be true to its roots. Obviously the game was going to be easier shooting-wise after moving on from the originals awkward view and controls into a 3D world. Hence they added more enemies and had to tweak other aspects.

NOT BEING ABLE TO RUN AND SHOOT WAS AN INHERENT PART OF THE GAME AND WAS BUILT AROUND IT PERFECTLY. IT MADE IT TENSE AND YOU HAD TO BE STRATEGIC IN YOUR ACTIONS AND USE OF WEAPONS.

IT WAS NOT A REMAKE OF AN OUTDATED STYLE AND IT WAS NOT A RUN OF THE MILL ACTION GAME LIKE THE SERIES TENEDED TO TREND TOWARDS LATER IN THE SERIES.

It was done exactly right and is why many consider it the last legit RE game and why many hold it above Ocarina and others as the GOAT.

You contrarian fedora douche bags.

I'd like that. As much as I love 4, it has nothing of the atmosphere or exploring from the older titles.

>>3087446
>that wouldn't work
No reason it can't, the gameplay would just be slightly different.
You'd aim and steer like in 4, and you'd have a camera over the shoulder, but you have to explore and find your way around, solving puzzles, like in the old games.
Monsters can be more vicious to make up for you being easier to move, zombies can become redheads if not killed right.
Since you don't see the entire room, enemies can hide outside of your view.

Inventory can be classic style, with a special item in a side slot for each character, knife is a quick button now instead of an inventory item, and there should be an option to unload a weapon for a simple convenience.

I love RE4s atmosphere, but it's decidedly different from the previous games.

1 & 2 are more like creepy mysteries, while 4 is like an action adventure with horror tones.

What I'm saying is that a game styled like the old one's slower puzzles, exploring and mystery solving, with their atmosphere, but with the controls, camera and aiming from 4 would be a really cool game.

I'd want something both kinds of games had, and respectively lacked.

You keep saying this but you're not really talking about a style so much as a genre. You're treating the older games like you expected them to be shooters, and in that way they don't work as well as RE4. They aren't shooters though, and they work great for the type of game they are.

The logical solution wouldn't be more enemies, it'd be less ammunition. RE4 gave you lots of ammo, enemies even dropped ammo when you kill them, and even the weakest guns had the ability to stun so you could perform roundhouse kicks on a crowd or suplex an enemy.

>> No.3089620

There are plenty of games that kept the action tense without turning your character into a paraplegic. Either adjust your enemy AI to be better or like >>3089567 said keep ammo low to focus more on avoidance and evasion. But they set RE4 up in such a way you HAD to clear each room to move onto the next in many cases. They wrote themselves into a corner with that one, so they had to dump loads of ammo on you so you couldn't get stuck. But keeping tank controls in a fully 3D world with fast enemies wasn't the way to build tension. It just came off as clunky and badly thought out. The least they could've done if they insisted on paralyzing Leon would be to give him a dodge command like RE3 had.

love love love the orignal resi trilogy (and CV, & 4). im actually playing umbrella chronicles at the moment, which whilst fairly repetitive, its quite cool the watch the events from a new perspective (Even if they do fuck with the storylines massively.) I do also enjoy going through the mansion in first person mode. (they did a good job of recreating it).

i find with the original three, it is very hard to rank them. they are all different, but equally as good.
if i had the choose at gunpoint though, it'd be no.1. i think they absolutely nailed the atmosphere, it is pretty challenging, and the first time i played it (pre-2000), seemed very lengthy and a great journey. i love how there are tiny little things you wont realize the first time such as small cutscenes you can unlock, different cutscenes through the various routes you take. i could go on and on. one of the best games ever made. this was a pretty crappy post but whatever.

anyone ever notice how the FMV that plays when u try to open the front doors of the mansion shows you closing the door straight through the dogs head.

also, was anyone else in awe when they discvoered you could go back to the very start and get all that gunpowder, after reaching the train. as well as the secret stash u need to use the crank on near the start. when i found out about that as a kid i was so excited haha

Because frankly, it just isn't very good. It's cool, especially given the hardware, but it isn't actually good as a game.

It does some really neat things with graphics and sound, and the music, on top of being awesome, has a kickass dynamic feature (the more enemies on screen, the more intense the music gets, and this happens seamlessly), from a design standpoint, it's gorgeous (graphics are really good, and characters will actually blend into the shadows, so you can legit be ambushed by a zombie slouching in a dark alcove), but it runs kind of poorly on original hardware, the gameplay is a pretty resounding *bleh*, and the story has some flaws.

The "Golf" slider in combat is nothing short of terrible, you can get the hang of it but it'll never feel good, items you have to pick up are invisible, the game will simply tell you if you're standing on/at an item, which is incredibly tedious, it's like every other item is hidden from you and you have to go on a blind scavenger hunt constantly, with the exception that the game will tell you if one of the nearby monsters are holding something (which may or may not be important). The plot isn't actually too shoddy from the get go, you get to play as Barry, which kicks ass, but the ending just shits on you.

I think that if someone did an extensive romhack of it, or took it's assets to remake the game from the ground up (this is for emulators of course), you could be looking at a really good game.

Because we've had the conversation a hundred times and it usually goes the same every time.

Although to humor you, I'll point out that the game is interesting if you try and do things out of sequence, although it reveals one of the major failings of the game in that items seemingly pop up at random based on story progression. For example, the grenade launcher. If you head to the room where you find it immediately, it isn't there. It doesn't show up until after a few story scenes, and there's no explanation as to why. Its not like a crate gets knocked over or anything. There isn't an item there, and suddenly there is.

The twist ending is also particularly weak.

The woman>The man holding twins>The man with the teacup

>This is where it gets tricky and you have to use your surroundings to figure it out.
The man with the earthenware plate>The man with the earthenware vase

Oh, this too, items will only appear when the plot calls for it. And not just plot items or keys either.

If you reach some areas too early, the game simply won't spawn any items at all, not even enemies, until you pass a certain point in the story, in which case the area will instantly fill up, despite having been barren a minute ago, as if the zombies were all hiding until the time was right.

It's really ambitious, but falls flat.
If the game had been shelved and later reworked to be put on the GBA, it could maybe have made use of the stronger hardware, larger storage, and extra buttobs, to make a game that plays much better (though on a sidenote, the unique visuals would probably change a lot with better graphics being available, which I'd have mixed feelings about.

There was also an unfinished port of the first game to the GBC, and while it was about 80% done, I can't imagine it would have been much better than playing RE2 on the Game.com

Yeah, its a great puzzle, I just made a shitty assumption in that
1. The letter was written for the current butler
2. The butler would have ANYTHING to do with family succession.

I am guessing they intended you to use the context clue that the candlestick would be last since it is still preserved AND the man in the picture is the only one who looked remotely like Alfred. After that you can figure out where the vase goes by omission.

I wish more puzzles in the game were that good. Sure I didn't really solve it myself, but at least it was better than "remember where things go".
