Death Mountain, Zelda 1.

Nearly half the size of the total overworld.
Filled to the brim with tough bosses and monsters.
Contains two of the most powerful items in the game.
Demands you be absolutely decked out in items and supplies to get through it.

Now this, this is a dungeon!

What are some other awesome dungeons like this one? The kind that throw you through challenge after challenge, the kind that make you forget what the outdoors even looked like, the kind that perpetuates dread through every step?

I suppose you're right.

That pic was chosen because almost every other pic is spoilers of the map. Was hoping to find someone who would draw a stylized version of the dungeon, but people don't seem to do that much for Zelda 1.

Incidentally, I remember a guy on /vr/ here was making renders like this. I wonder if this one is by the same guy.

Link's Awakening dungeon 7, Eagle's Tower. This is the best Zelda dungeon. It's a difficult puzzle (at least it was when I was 12) but it's completely fair. You always have some idea what you're supposed to be doing and feel like you're making progress.

Basically every Wizardry or M&M dungeon ever.

i replay that game twice a year and i STILL forgot the master key last time.

although it's not a dungeon, i will refer to the culex battle from super mario rpg. we had to try that one more than a few times over a few days and when we finally won, my friends and i were jumping around the room

except for that part where you can fuck up and make the dungeon unwinnable

you should check this out

Just finished a playthrough that was pretty screwy but rather refreshing.

>>3078167
do later wizardry games have more of an overworld? I've played about 10 hours of Wiz1 and I've never seen anything that wasn't the dungeon or a menu screen at the tavern/trading post/chapel/etc.

cool, i will check that out
off topic: here's my favorite room from LOZ. can you guess the dungeon?

Yeah I like it too. Great one to get your teeth into.

I don't think that's ever happened to me.

just finished a runthrough, but that one randomized all the room layouts and dungeon colors. It's been too long since I played the vanilla game so I can't say, sorry. Which one is it?

me neither, but I only ever played DX and they fixed it there.

quote from tvtropes (yeah yeah I know)

>"You can also get stuck in Eagle's Tower in the original (non-DX) version. If you drop one of the orbs down a certain hole, then it won't respawn properly, preventing you from completing the dungeon."

>"It's also possible to drop the orb behind a pillar and on spikes, rendering it impossible to retrieve it."

There are a few more actually, I never realized myself but again never played the original. I'll link it since it's kind of neat and I don't see a reason to just repost the entire thing here.

Wizardry 6 has open air parts but they're practically dungeons themselves.
Wizardry 7 has more conventional overland with towns in with NPCs reside.

looks solid, if I ever figure out Wiz 1-3 then I'll probably hit 6-8 next.

Start with 5. It's more beginner friendly than 1 or 6 and is a transition between both gameplay styles.

>> No.3078324

>>3078293
I'm not really worried about beginner-friendliness desu, is it really that big a deal? I think I've been doing alright in Wiz1, only been losing thieves and it seems like dying is their job anyway.

>> No.3078351

>>3078324
Later on you can get surprised by encounters that wipe out most of your party before you even get a chance to act, or even worse get drained. You can get around that by resetting but it's a nuisance.
5 is by no means easy but the challenge is more straightforward.

I hated that dungeon, I was stuck in it forever. I was a kid too when I beat it. Worse, I didn't speak English at the time. Shit's difficult when you can't even read the clues.

I personally prefer turtle rock level (8th dungeon). The dungeon is huge and it has a lot of puzzles in it.

I hate that boxing cunt miniboss who sends you back to the start.

I'm not too intimidated by that, though I have to wonder now if it's not a matter of Wiz5 seeming boring by comparison after beating the trilogy.

2 and 3 are boring after beating 1.
5 has a lot to offer in comparison.

>> No.3078724

hmm, and I was looking forward to transferring my party to 2. Maybe I'll just do 1 and then do 5? kind of backwards but could be worse.

When you think about it Wizardry is kind of a screwy series, isn't it? It's like, 1-2-3 is sequential but then 5 is a good primer for 1-2-3 and 4 is fucking impossible until you've at least played the first one, and then 6-8 are separate entries.

Do they still make Wiz? I know 8 was on PS3, will there be a 9 someday?

>> No.3078750

>>3078724
You can actually transfer your party from 5 to 1 or 2 but it's limited the other way around, mainly useful to start with a lord or ninja.

Wizardry 8 was released in 2001 and is exclusive for Windows. There are still Japanese Wizardry games but the American main line ended then.

ah, I was looking at another wiz game on PS3 and thinking it was 8, my mistake

well it's good to know that the saga continues.

Legacy of the Wizard is another great dungeon game, that thing seems like a real labyrinth, looking forward to delving into it again at some point (it's in my big pile of NES games to beat).
