What is the consensus on Pinball simulation games?

simulation never feels like the real deal

i can smash funhouse in pinball arcade, but i suck balls on the real table

Pinball is great. Pinball video games rarely do it justice though. A few that try different things with the idea have been neat though. Sonic Spinball is an imperfect but quite fun game.

I like both real and videogame pinballs. My favorites are Timeshock, Medieval Madness (Future Pinball), Devil Crush (MegaDrive) and Space Cadet.
I am not uptodate. Are there other free pinsims like VirtualPinball or Future Pinball?

Spinball is underrated to the point of hatred. It wasn't a traditional sonic game and the physics were a lil wonky when you changed from being a ball to running/jumping, but it was a good game none the less.

But yea, fake pinball feels nothing like playing pinball. It's the difference between having sex and playing an ero-game. Sure, you may have similar visuals, but nothing else is there and it's a full experience.

Pinball Arcade is fucking fun even if it can't simulate the real thing desu

Most important thing is replacing (or tumbling until they're smooth again) the pinballs as soon as they show significant signs of wear. It doesn't matter how hard your playfield is, rough steel will quickly wear it away.

Other than that, keep everything clean, and apply a layer of hard carnauba wax to act as a sacrificial layer to wear away instead of the playfield (also speeds up the game and makes it more fun).

>Spinball is underrated to the point of hatred
It's overrated if anything. It's a Sonic game that runs at a very low framerate, and not even a consistent framerate, it varies unpredictably. For a game based around fast action this is completely unacceptable.

It has a few fanboys, sure, but overall I think hating it is almost as common as hating FF7/8/9 (pick your personal hatred). When it comes up in convo, I just assume that speaking of it positively will get a torrent of hate because its what I've seen.

As for technical problems, oh yea. Tons of them. But I will say I put in far more hours of my life playing Spinball than I did Sonic 1.

It's the best video pinball game I've ever played. John Petrucci even contributed some music to the game.

I think a major point that is lost on most people is that Spinball is vertical, of course it doesn't feel anything like a pinball table. Sonic isn't rolling around on a playfield, he's being propelled through the air and bouncing off of and destroying stuff that is floating in and moving through the air, not on flat surfaces.
With exception to the bonus stages which are arguably better than the main stages.

You must be new here?

I really like pinball so I really dislike simulations. That being said, I enjoy games that don't try too hard and just aim to be a video game that looks/plays like pinball. Alien/Devils Crush are good examples of those.

This is true. But ultimately, the simulation (especially when it's real tables, like how Pinball Arcade does it) is pretty much the only way I can enjoy anything remotely like a good pinball these days. The cost to own (nevermind upkeep) a table is too high for me to justify, and if I want more than one, hooo, that's just trouble.

So while not ideal, a thing like Pinball Arcade introducing me to a fun game I'd never spend think to spend the quarters on (or even see!) like Monster Bash or the like, I'm thankful for that.
