Exactly who thought Platoon would make a good video game? I mean, really. For one thing, it was a serious movie, not a cheesefest like Ghostbusters or something, secondly kids are the primary market for video games and how many of them were interested in a drama about the Vietnam War anyway.

Movie tie-ins had instant recognition and pre-established fans.
American "Action" films were huge money and foreign devs saw dollar signs even if they didn't understand the source material properly they understood the gullibility of the American consumer.

Platoon is a terrible game anyway, especially surprising that it came from the usually excellent Sunsoft. It seems more likely to me that the devs just had some generic run-and-gun put together and decided to slap a movie license on it.

It wasn't originally Sunsoft's game, it was some crap made in Yurop by Ocean which was one of the shittiest devs of the 80s-early 90s, notorious for scooping up as many licenses as they could and churning out low-quality games like Tasty Kakes.

The original computer versions were made for the C64 and Spectrum, then a DOS version was made by a US dev, and Sunsoft ported it to the NES a year later, but all of them were terrible. Except the C64 version because the in-game music is fucking awesome.

I didn't know NoA was NoJ. Any US Nintendo ad from this period was very clearly targeting kids. In fact they even rejected bringing over accessories like Family BASIC that were not seen as interesting to the target audience.

It's true. Computer gamers were generally adult neckbeards rather than kids. Even in Europe where home computer culture was much stronger than US, this was true.

Nintendo were the guys who censored blood, nudity, profanity, religious references and anything not 100% family friendly. Do you not know the almost legendary story of how they had to censor Maniac Mansion for the NES?

Kek.

On top of that, though... I think you're grossly underestimating how many kids saw the movie.

Pic related: A kid's toy based on an R-Rated movie.

Toymakers knew what kids were into. They knew the kids were seeing these movies and they knew their parents were letting them.

When I was a kid I remember some kids had seen platoon. I hadn't. You know how kids do those role play games in the playground and proclaim themselves to be some fictional character like Skeletor or Optimus Prime - this one kid once "was" Platoon, for the purpose of one such activity.

Who knows, maybe he hadn't seen it - he just saw the video sleeve and thought it was Commando-style film about a guy called Platoon.

We all liked Robocop and The Lost Boys and stuff back then though.

There's side-scrolling jungle sequence, which includes blowing up a bridge and searching a village.

First person turret sequence
Then finally a vertical shooting sequence.

There aren't a lot of Vietnam War games and the only other /vr/ one I can name off the top of my head is Microprose's Conflict In Vietnam.

The Vietnam War never translated well into strategy games because the mostly irregular fighting doesn't work so good in terms of "click X division, attack Y division". It's better suited for an FPS.
