Wanted to play this so bad as a kid, none of the hack recreations out there ever really felt right.

Based Taxman was going to rework it as a new level for the Sonic CD Remaster, but it just ended up scrapped again.

It was most definitely a mock up. Maybe done on a computer, maybe a one screener dummied out in the final game. The zone and assets were never made where never made though beyond that little screen.

I liked the version in Sonic Extended 2 romhack that recreates the aesthetic with yellow desert/white snow sections interchangeably, and a second at the end of the second act where you climb sand as it pours like a hourglass. But it's also kinda shit because both acts are maze-like and the second forces you up a long linear path to activate a switch so you can progress to the hourglass section. Also the Genocide City Zone has two exactly the same acts except for a boss in the second one. Why even have two acts ffs.

Except Dust Hill was ever only a Sonic 2 zone. It was a fitting replacement for Oil Ocean, this doesn't deny its theme was originally Casino Night 2P.

Emerald Hill 2P was also intended to be the contrasting Winter theme.

>bgm #10 was meant for a cutscene

At least the early-to-late designs, if the demo track is anything to come by, but this cutscene was never willingly implemented because the zone was soon to be scrapped after they assigned BGM #10 to HPZ (and programming the title card). There's no data for the ending part of song, it just infinitely loops, which means that if there even was a cutscene the song wouldn't have probably played out like the demo track.

My opinion is that BGM #10 eventually became the equivalent of Lava Reef 2 before the zone itself was eventually erased from the ROM, even if virtually no change was made to the layout.

Well there's a fangames called Before the Sequel that has a Lost Levels Zone consisting of a Hidden Palace for Act 1, Wood Zone for Act 2 and Dust Hill for Act 3. The Wood Zone is interesting full of trees getting sawn as you progress, kinda neat. Hidden Palace Zone has crystals that reduce gravity and make you bounce. But the Dusr Hill Zone is the real standout for me, simply for the music - it's got a tune inspired by the 2P Mystic Mine music that changes into a more snowy sound when the level changes from desert to ice. Then again the whole soundtrack is amazing.

>Oil ocean is very clearly in Saudi arabia.

Oil Ocean is on West Side Island you moron. And the middle eastern vibes you get from the song (mainly the square part) while superficially fitting don't match with the heavy guitar part which play off a more "dangerous" vibe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyPePmuWZ8o

Enter Dust Hill, which is entirely set in a desert, one of the most dangerous places there are, full of venomous animals, and with harsh survival conditions such as lack of water and the sun constantly hitting you. It's clear as day this music was intended for Dust Hill, and Saudi Arabia is certainly not unknown to having desert areas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNclH-WGMJY

Casino Night 2P, while more western sounding, does not clash at all with Oil Ocean, portraying a sort of nasty, resigned, displeased vibe (note the main synth's constant bends, telling you that place is nauseating stuff, this aspect of the song was entirely removed once it was rehashed as Casino Night 2P), and it makes sense since Oil is one of the icons of global pollution and people fight over it in a sad never ending cycle.

>> No.3076062

>>3075759
I'm not the guy you replied to, but how the fuck can you not realize that Oil Ocean Zone's music was never meant for another level? It's VERY clearly Middle-Eastern-sounding, and isn't fitting for a Western level in the slightest. Also, Casino Night's 2P music fits Casino Night perfectly as well. It's jazzy, slow, and conveys a sense of contemplation like a gambler at a casino. I don't see how it's "Western" at all.

>> No.3076128

>>3076062
>Dust HIll

And before you say it, nips don't give a crap about stereotypical cactii belonging in Colorado, Texas or whatever. The stage was meant to be a desert zone, not mentioning whichever desert. The only input Nakamura was given being basically "SABAKU ZONE" or something like that.

I'm not saying that the final choices for the tracks weren't made thoughtfully, I'm just pointing out they were very likely to be the intended zones behind those tracks.
