I found some Quake prototypes the other day. Not Qtest1, they're versions that are much closer to release but they have some big differences. Several map differences and an entirely different END map which is impossible to finish as far as I can tell.

Exactly like that beta. It's already a heavily modified Quake engine. Saying that engine is 'running on the Quake engine' but that the full Half-Life is not is ridiculous.

Most interesting beta in my opinion. Really wonder if what we got was bettet then what could've been. Most people look at the art alone and say gba was better but I would've dealed with aged graphics if the game was more polished.

I'm a big fan of the N64's unrefined low-poly so I agree with you there.
The developers said 'The GBA game is more or less the same story as the N64 version with minor changes' but looking at what little screens there are of the N64 version, I can't recognize a single scene that made the transition.

From the footage I've seen it looks like they moved around Flint and Claus' appearances, made kumatora more important and cut some stuff from the desert. The intro scenes, osohe castle, thunder tower and club all seemed pretty intact.

I think the game releasing on the GBA, going 2D and having a few years to polish its story ultimately worked to the games advantage and would never trade what we got for the N64 game, though I would be lying if I said I didn't want to see more of that beta. It's more of a curiosity for me though.
