And yes, Shenmue is on DC which is definitely allowed here.

What's the best way to play a non-truncated version of the game on my actaul dreamcast?

I've heard that most dreamcast cdi/gdi/iso releases have compressed shit in order to fit on a standard 700mb CD.

However, I'm going to be reviewing Shenmue soon and I want the full non butchered experience. Is there anyway to get around this without emulating?

GDI is an untouched dump. If you must have that you can either:

1) Play the GDI on an emulator
2) Get an ODE like GDEMU or USB-GDROM
3) Buy the actual games.

AFAIK, Demul has made some decent progress in the past few years but is a bit power hungry whereas NullDC hasn't been touched in years and always had problems with the games, so if you go the emulator route it'll be far from perfect.

I don't think the trimmed CDI releases are as bad as people make out though. I think Shenmue only had a bunch of voices taken out? Probably obscure NPCs you'd never speak to anyway.

There are also a few hacked versions floating around that might be worth checking out. I know there is an undub for the first game where you get Japanese voices with the English subs, and a repack of the second game that has the English voices from the Xbox version.

They're not even deleted consistently. Some of those threads were getting pruned while other similar threads were left up. The generations thing started small but caught on for some reason and is almost uncontested now despite making absolutely no sense for consoles that aren't released at the same time. Occasionally you'll come across people who swear the generation thing makes perfect sense, but when you press them they come up with all kinds of nonsense on the spot to try and justify it. You could start saying N64 is 6th gen and the only recourse you'd hear would be that it's 5th gen. Generations are just groups made up by some random guy on Gamestop years ago.

It would be much harder to misinterpret the rules if generations were taken out altogether, only sticking to the year thing. That probably wouldn't stop that janitor with the DC vendetta though.
