I found a PlayStation 1 at a Goodwill yesterday, but for some reason the boot screen on it is different from any other PS1 I have ever seen. I looked around online a bit hoping to find a bit of info on why that is, but all I could find that has this same boot screen is the Net Yaroze (according to a YouTube video showing the boot screens of all PS1 models). The thing is, a proper Net Yaroze model would be black, but this one is clearly the "default" gray, so now I'm wondering if someone changed its BIOS to a version that's not region-locked or I have some rare anomaly in somewhat poor condition.

Also, it came with a CD of an NTSC game, however, the game refuses to run. I initially thought that it was a problem with the console's lens, however, when trying to play a music CD it was playing it just fine. When trying to run the game, it just hangs on pic related. I've never owned a PS1 before, so I don't know if I'm supposed to expect an error message or if it just hangs like this when trying to read a scratched disc (the game disc has some scratches on it, but they don't look severe enough to where a disc would become fully unplayable because of them).

Basically, my questions are: why is its boot screen different, why does it hang, and how can I fix it?

That's just a fucked uped splash screen. Someone probably modded the bios to be region free and fucked it in the process.

Probably this.
Open it up and see if there's shitty soldering inside

Would that be something that would affect the console's ability to read PS1 discs? I mean, obviously it's intended to increase the amount of discs it can read by removing region locking, but could it screw it up to where it can't read anything except music CD's?

Yes.

Same thing happens in emulators.

Here are the guts. What am I supposed to be looking for here?

Also, it had a sticker on the bottom that said it was refurbished, so that might be a solution to all this already

I'm not sure where the chip is. Google it.

Hmm... looks normal to me, although I only own and know the PSOne well (the tiny one).

Let's see if anyone else in the read has anything to say.

I've got a 5501 PS1 and I've had it boot to that weird screen 3-4 times in the time that I've owned it. You're not alone OP!

Its modded granted, but I'm thinking it's something with the BIOS not initializing properly. It wouldn't be surprising if there was unfinished graphics in the BIOS for other planned boot options like through the memory card slot or the parallel port and mabey thats showing up for some reason.

>> No.3046565

OP, you're misremembering one thing.
The black splash screen is encoded in the CD itself, not in the console. So, you can actually see different screens depending on what game you have on the drive. In original games, you won't really see anything out of ordinary, just "SCEE" or "SCEJ" in place of "SCEA".

It was a common practice from pirates back then (specially in multi-game CDs) to make a different splash screen (sometimes even with animations, like Paradox did).
That said, the black splash screen is actually in the PSX BIOS as well, but it won't show up if you're not using a game CD... however, if you're using a defective CD (or even a computer CD, depends on the CD), you can see a defective splash screen, like yours, or one where the top right part is zoomed and the rest disappears.

tl;dr That's a defective game.

I heard that the very first wave of PS1s didn't have API calls that showed up in 150x and later, thus causing some late PSX games to have issues.

Any validity on this?

It's a data seek problem. If you put in a computer CD in the drive, like >>3046565 said, a few things can happen. One of them is the console seeking data that doesn't exist, and this causes the BIOS to lag and displaying stuff out of order or really slow.

The guy in the video said he got it with a Ubuntu 9.01 CD. I got it to happen with an old "multimedia kit" CD.

OP here, guess I'll try looking for a different PS1 game then, thanks for this info.

Anyone got tips for what I should stick on the button that tricks the PS1 into thinking that the lid is shut? All I have around the house is magic tape and it's shit
