Nintendo invented the handheld, so were first to market
Thus, Game Boy had more games
Nintendo also had strict quality guidelines
Also, Game Boy runs for a long time on 4 AAs
Game Gear eats 6 AAs in 2.5 hours
Game Boy was cheaper
Tetris

Game Gear is great, but Game Boy was more accessible.

Sega released a single portable console before dying.
Nintendo began with the classic Game Boy and hasn't stopped since then.

Luck? It follows the basic Nintendo formula of briliant design and cutting edge innovation. Bringing new hardware (in a link cable this time) and weaving it into the design philosophy of the game and aetting itself (by allowing the trade of monsters)

You're overlooking things and overreacting.
Most of the time things aren't the way you look at them, they're what they are and nothing else.
On this board we discuss about retro games, so it's obvious that the historical part of gaming comes out every now and then, and if someone states something wrong as if it was a very well known historical fact just to bring grist to their mill, they'll be corrected.
Sure there are more polite ways to do so than just shove it in their face, but that's not the point, that's how people act in this shithole called 4chan...don't like it? leave it. Don't wanna leave? Deal with it and go on.

Battery life.
Exclusive titles.
Third party support.
Price.

The GG may have had technical superiority over the Gameboy, but it chewed through batteries like a mofo, and Nintendo was just beginning to loosen its grip on third party developers when it was released. The Gameboy was a better value for consumers because it sold at a lower price, it had excellent battery life, and it had a better overall library.

Also, not everyone's going to agree with this, but the GB sound chip > SMS sound chip, and Tetris > Columns.
