Right now I'm taking a bunch of professional-grade fanmade Falcom MIDI arranges and making playback exports so you don't have to own a later Roland Sound Canvas module to enjoy them. About half of the material's fit for /vr/. I'm just glad they were archived when the original site, Falcom Music Room, shut down several years ago.

>>2944301
Site's awesome. I learned about Eiichi Goto and his innovative computer tech, parametrons, half a year back. Transistors obviously superceded parametron circuits, but it's neat how domestic engineers were finding unique ways to speed up processing in the post-war years.

I've seen uploads of Wizardry Chronicles and New Age of Llylgamyn on Tokugawa, but not the Empire games, so I'll ask if anyone's got a dump available.

Someone on Tokugawa is looking into getting a copy of TGL's Dark Solid, another real-time strategy game of theirs alongside Saint Eyes in the late-1990s. They really wanted to push their envelope in a period where even RTSes were radical and risky compared to simple old eroge and train games.

Power DoLLS 3 and 4 IIRC are top-down real-time-with-pause wargames (Frozen Synapse is a recent example). Kogado's Rasetsu games maybe are closer to real-time tactics (like Saint Eyes, or Commandos/Desperados/Syndicate). Dark Solid seems closest to traditional post-Dune Western RTSes.

True. Best solution is to record audio, then make VGM packs you can set up as playlists in foobar using the VGMplay component. And that hasn't been done for a whole lot of stuff besides Umemoto, Falcom, &c.

Not sure about NPIIfmgen MIDI compatibility myself, but here's a list of MIDI-compatible PC-98 games: http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1436

You could probably get something working via a virtual MIDI I/O (loopMIDI works best) and either a replica soundfont or genuine sound module. I wonder if you could hack in support for Roland's Sound Canvas VA (VSTi plug-in that others have gotten working for DOSBox).

Does anyone know what the current state of X68000 emulation is at? Are the different sound modules emulated well or do you need to have hardware for them? Is there a decent emulator on Linux for X68000?

I have a sweet little laptop and I wanna set it up with plenty of oldschool J-PC emulators and the like! Preferebly with all their OSes and stuff intact, but I'm new to these systems and emulating them so I'm going slow and starting with X68000 first cause it's my favorite.

Chitty Chitty Train (accessible puzzler)
Totsugeki Mix (companion platformer to Rusty)
Dante's Odyssey (platformer adventure based on the Divine Comedy)
Any of System Sacom's mid-1980s/non-Novelware games (Mark Flint series, Marchen Veil, Power Singer if you can find it)
CRW/2 + Power DoLLS series (mecha-based wargames)
A-Train III (localized for DOS/Amiga/Mac by Maxis)
Tokyo Twilight Busters (has a DS remake, no translations for either but this one's your Japanese point-and-click adventure)
Night Slave
Metal Force and Flame Zapper Kotsujin (STG action in space!)
Falcom in general (Revival Xanadu and Brandish are great choices, as would be Advanced Lord Monarch)
Compile Disc Station games (Project EGG has these)
Bio_100%/Onion Soft doujin stuff (former started during the PC-98 era, latter's from the PC-6001 age but made newer games)
Farland Story series
GAGE (Koshiro-scored isometric dungeon crawler, no translation but you don't need one to get far playing it)
Michiaki Tsubaki's JRPGs (Insiders duo, Sword of Kumdor, The Stellar Sign; these games are obscure, and hard to beat without the guidebooks they were packaged in, but very interesting)
Burning Dragon Plus

>>2956257
XM6 typeG's latest English version is very good for most commercial and doujin games. You can even make machine-state files if you're playing a game that for some reason isn't storing custom settings/configuration. MIDI support is good, at least for Sound Canvas modules and soundfonts, and there's MT-32 emulation but I wouldn't recommend it based on low accuracy of sound (not sure about old Yamaha MIDI). XEIJ, a recent Java-based X68k emulator, should run on Linux distros as well: http://mada.la.coocan.jp/xeij/

Sharp of today's not the Sharp of yesterday, with or without merger. Also, I'm surprised Falcom never put out any X68k games of their own besides the Ys III port. That Sorcerian port in pic related is unofficial and more or less faithful to the PC-88/X1 versions. Nothing as forward-thinking and varied as KidPix. IIRC KidPix was localized for J-PCs early on, so maybe there just wasn't incentive (or developers skilled enough and willing) to outdo what already worked.

Degica, let alone Artdink, never sends C&Ds. There was a mostly-full fan translation of A-Train 9 V3.0 a while back, based on the German/Japanese releases, which most fans use at the moment (assuming they aren't playing V4.0 on Steam with a scant few extra trains). I don't think Degica's Artdink team, if there even is one, is likely to integrate Helly/Elegnaim/MrRichard's work into the releases themselves. That's more likely Artidnk's call to make.

I suspect these games' style of dithering and resolution means, if you do a half-assed collection of PC-98 games for TV/large monitor display in full-screen, most games would look beyond awful. Compile really should have done a compilation of their unique Disc Station games, but they ballooned into bankruptcy instead moving off of PC and shutting down Disc Station in order to make a console release viable.

Still not sure when Olteus came out exactly. I mentioned it being from 1987 once before, but I was under the assumption this was a PC-88VA launch title. Thing is, the game was distributed via mail order and had a 1991 X68k version (Olteus II, a la After Burner/Galaxy Force II) with changes pertaining to that system. 3DS version is broken. Framerate drops whenever there's too many transparencies on screen (SOMEHOW), and it's crippled by the very fact of being on the 3DS itself. You have a choice between buttons which retract too slowly to be mashed, or autofire so fast it breaks the game. The analog slider is incredibly inaccurate, and the d-pad is a piece of shit.

How? it's not like theres a 50hz version of it, plus they got much better after the launch of the 3DS & Wii U.

They don't censor the evergreen titles, just niche titles, and those don't even affect the game play, they're just outfits and petting (who you can still do but only if you get S-Ranks, the Lezing drugging is still in the game)

Exoa II: Warroid is a very accessible vs. fighting game that has decent AI, I'd give that a shot instead of the MSX version.

I have to go to work in an hour, so bullet-point list time:

-Thunder Force (1984 version, scrolls better than every other version, surprisingly interesting beyond historical reasons)
-Reviver (Japanese graphic text adventure with some point-and-click mechanics, plus a lot of realism/simulation detail that add to a straightforward fantasy story)
-Aspic Special (bit harder to get into because of language barrier, but a solid old-style CRPG with first-person dungeons and side-scrolling battle arenas)
-Euphory (two-player hack 'n' slash adventure, has catchy music, okay visuals, and a lot to explore)
-Buuma or Scarlett 7 (they have versions on PC-88, but these are the originals and they play much better; two of the more interesting shooters from the mid-'1980s on J-PCs)
-Sofia (early platformer that's a bit clunky but easy to get into, has a somewhat open world and doesn't bother with scrolling)
-Luxsor (hybrid shooter from Telenet that's got both shot/bomb top-down stages and unique rail-shooter portions that get a little slow but overally make for a varied experience)
-Kagirinaki Tatakai/Brain Breaker (really innovative and cool action/adventure games that came out early on)

There's also some cool doujin shooters like Dialide and Revolty-II.

The series found a lot of use as a workstation rather than being just for games and hobbies. Report and ignore.

The programmer/director of Glodia's Die Bahnwelt is updating that game's page on his site: http://www.quarter-dev.info/bw/bwmain.php

Pic related is probably the highlight of this new content (better size/quality at his site), but there's also a music gallery and other images up. Based on his tweets I think Kuwata's going to salvage a bunch of Glodia's digitally-scanned artwork which he no longer has access to. The X68k-ready scans will be just fine if that's the case.

Also, baka @ trashing Thunder Force X1. The channel I just linked put up footage of the PC-98 version and apparently people still think even the best version's crap. I will defend that game for what it is, an open-range Xevious/Time Pilot with more logic behind it than some think.

On another note, it's not like Heart Heat Girls and Marine Philt qualify as PNC to begin with. Tokyo Twilight Busters is the major non-Windows J-PC PNC adventure I know of, with Makyoden superficially resembling a Sierra game but lacking item puzzles and unique deaths. Compile's Applesauce series might qualify too since later games have progression beyond simply clicking things for reactions and playing mini-games.

Now that may not matter to you (and if so I feel sorry for you son), but I'm betting at least one other person reading this board would be interested in knowing that. I really wish I had known that there are better emulators than Anex86 when I first got into the pc98 a couple years ago.

I'm aware it has issues, this is just the only emulator a retard like me can use without headaches.

dude, just get the new lite emulator pack that's on Tokugawa. Everything is already configured. It has anex with all the plugins too if you want to use that.

Fun fact: "Anex" is how Japanese people refer to ANal sEX.

You can trust me because I'm from the Internet.

Middle click in NP2 to gain access to the mouse
click to start the game.

This game uses entirely mouse. (And is also bad, but kind of cool for existing nonetheless).

Thanks, just played it. It's pretty fun and I like the art. I wonder if there's more cuties if I beat it.

There's CGs between every stage if I remember correctly, but no nudity or anything.

In relentless search of new, unheard of games, what interesting non-game floppies/images have you found so far?

One I quite like is "Nekomimi Donburi," which is a cute little program which mimics a graphical OS, and has a bunch of well-drawn pictures of catgirls.

I love the old PC-8801 doujin music disks, like the Firecracker and NT-3 series. The music is cool, and some of them also have some neat artwork too. Look for the ones that say SB2, because those take advantage of the more powerful Sound Board II board with more FM synth channels and custom PCM sounds.

Yeah, the CGs between stages are just of you beating the boss. Honestly, for a "bad" game it's really technically impressive and pretty satisfying when you beat a stage.

I very much agree.

Honestly, my biggest problem with it is honestly that all the stages are copied straight from Steel Gunner. I realize it was intended to be a "do the impossible" kinda port, but wouldn't it have been even cooler if they made original stages to better suit the system/controls/etc? I would probably even consider it a favorite if it was completely original.

So i installed everything for yu-no and ran it to make sure it worked and everything. I chose the monochrome color option to see what it was like and went into settings a bit to see what the colored version looks like and there was no setting for that so i quit the game and started it up again to switch to the colored mode and i get this error.
Im just running it on my laptop to see if it would work and all so no emulator or anything like that.
Anyone know why this would pop up after it ran fine the first time?
Gonna re-install to see if it works first though

The PSU died and shat all over everything (not my fault, I got it that way from a junk auction). I bought it with the intention of repairing it, but it's going to take a ton of work. Right now it just sits on my desk as an objet d'art.

Ironically, I had a PC-98 in America but couldn't take it with me when I came to Japan. So I don't have one anymore.

I'm looking for a good PC-98 laptop in its stead, though. but the more I want one, the more I realize that I really don't need one.

>the more I want one, the more I realize that I really don't need one.
This is true. The main reasons I got a real PC-98 were (1) authentic sound and (2) CD-ROM games.

(1) is not really an issue anymore. With the latest versions of np2fmgen, I can't tell the difference in an A/B test. The only pratical difference is the latency.
(2) is still hit-and-miss, because CD-ROM emulation has never really been a priority for any of the emulator authors.

Some good 'ol Engrish for you guys.

I've got footage of the game itself too, not especially fun but a cool polygonal FM77AV game made by the guy who programmed Derby Stallion.
