Can we just have a chill thread about recommending games in general? Anything goes, just post games that you would really want other people to try out and maybe play the whole way through. If this thread is successful we will have a whole huge list of good /vr/ games to try out. You can be obscure as possible or recommend something maybe everyone has already played.

i doubt this is what you were expecting OP, but here comes an almost not retro, well known and recently remastered PC game.

Homeworld (the first)

if anyone is even a little into RTS, try homeworld1 single player campaign, i consider synopsis counter productive, so just try it.

dont worry, its not an interactive movie, theres only a dozen minute short engine cutscenes between missions

you can safely play the non remaster for its superior voice acting and background music that set its immerseful atmosphere

Anyway, Vanguard Bandits I think is good. I'm shit at strategy games but it has nice graphics, super awesome music, and 3 branching story paths. And mecha, of course.

Get it on PSN for 9.99, much simpler than hunting down a physical copy.

Zillion (Sega Master System)

It was Sega's answer to Metroid but not really. You're a dude named JJ and you have to sneak into an enemy robot drone idkwtf base and find this cute girl Apple and your homie Champ. Along the way you have to find out floppy disks for a destruct sequence to blow up the base. It's fucking awesome, and when you find your homies they become playable characters you can switch between.

its a 3d engine, i didnt even remember any locked resolution, and even being early 3d, blocky spaceships doesnt suffer a single bit, so younger spoiled gamers also dont have an issue the main reason why the lazy new "devs" pratically just added new more colourful galactic backgrounds and called it remaster?

Was picking NES/Famciom ROMs by random one night and stumbled upon this little gem. It's essentially Tetris where the pieces come from all four cardinal directions, and you control the board as opposed to the pieces. Very cool, but can be much harder to recover as opposed to normal Tetris. That just makes it all the more sweeter when you do, though.

Gameplay video I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8HpGK_vb_I

I'm surprised this game isn't more well-known, even if it Japan-only. Or maybe everyone already knows about it and I'm just late.

doesnt work
and YEAH, they changed fleet command Karan Sjet's voice

but i forgot the most important reasons to NOT PLAY REMASTER

>>3017243
homeworld remastered is actually just homeworld 2 engine with slightly improved polycount, and max texture sizes, the most visible things are galactic backgrounds and some lighting effects.

THAT MEANS homeworld 1 remastered runs on homeworld 2 engine REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

- that means tactical posture is gone (evasive, neutral agrersive...)

- repair frigates and its multi selection repair beam while it follows the shipS you told it to repair and keeps repairing THEM eternally if they reach full health and get damage again.

and some other things i dont recall, and also seems ppl were finding lots of errors in hw1 campaign (including dumb enemy AI) but im sure (hope) its all patched, but those 2 design decisions (or incapabilities of hw2 engine) pretty much break hw1.

kushan bomber fighters, a couple squads in evasive tactics against a heavy weapon big&slow ship, quite the damage until the enemy can send machinegun corvettes ur way and you just run home slightly slower than them and loose minimal forces while your frigates are half way to the scene to finish those corvettes and the sitting duck heavy ships

all in all, theres really no reason not to play the retro hw1 campaign.

you can then have fun multiplaying hw2 in remaster, with h2complex mod if those guys have updated it to the remaster engine already

I liked Guerrilla War for the NES.

It's like Ikari warriors, but much less frustrating overall.

I'm a complete scrub and it made me feel good because I got to the ending with no save-states even though I got a bunch of game overs, since you can continue from the point of death instead of immediately going back to the beginning.

Don't let my total ineptitude fool you though, it's a fun little game.

I have two recommendations, Viewpoint and Silent Bomber, both for the PS1.
My brother and I played these games to death as children.
Viewpoint is a 2.5D scrolling shooter with some really great visuals, tight gameplay, and some of my favourite music of that generation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGqrwQ2M6T0

Silent Bomber felt like a grown up Bomberman in the style of a top down shooter, I really enjoyed the futuristic aesthetic and soundtrack but the gameplay is what kept me and my brother hooked. Some of the powerups you can get are a lot of fun, especially when you upgrade how many bombs you can place at once. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmijj6duhwA

I see these threads all the time.

Do you think if I made a channel dedicated almost exclusively to recommendation lists on Youtube that I could be successful?

I mean there would be the obvious click baity stuff like

>recommended SNES games
With the obvious shit like Super Mario World

but then I could make a lot more specific stuff like

>Recommended Beginner JRPG's
>Recommended Shoot em ups on the TG-16

Think it would be good? I see tons of these threads and I think it would be nice to have a lot of condensed stuff with enough information to justify why a game is worth playing.

Thoughts? What would you want to see in a channel like that?

This would be pretty cool if done by a knowledgeable, non-tryhard person (by which I mean no let's player yelling/memes/failed attempts at humor). I'd like to see two things in particular:
1) Recommended beginner games. A lot of retro genres can be hard to get intounless you started playing them as a kid, because the most famous games are pretty difficult. Shmups for example.
2) Videos about specific developers.
