This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I bought a Mitsubishi Megaview, and while the BNC inputs work fine I can't get a signal from either composite input. Do these presentation monitors need anything special to get synced or is there likely just something wrong with it?

If you get a component to VGA box the Wii can hook up to the monitor as well as the PC. If you're only transcoding there's no lag, and you can play in glorious progressive scan rather than 480i. The only downside to this setup is if you're playing a game that doesn't support 480p there will be lag and artifacts from deinterlacing.

Did you change the input to one of the video channels? At least for mine, there are two video channels and two RGB channels, each with their own set of inputs(video 1 is a composite/s-video, video 2 is composite only).

Also make sure you don't have the termination switch set to High-Z; Unlike with the RGB inputs, it seems much less willing to accept an "improperly" termination signal.

>>3010727

>>3010732
You won't be able to play your SNES or PS1 on a PC monitor without some sort of upscaling/linedoubling going on.

>>3010749
That is a passive adapter and will do no sort of signal conversion what so ever. The only real use it would get is perhaps feeding an projector with DVI-I inputs that somehow takes Component over the RGB pins.

>>3010765
For the the Wii, so long as you're running it in 480p, a transcoder will work wonderfully with a PC monitor, but you want to try to avoid ones that also scale the image, and I believe the 1 pictured is one of them.
Anything stuck to 480i would have the same as the SNES/PS1 above.

My apologies, I thought those Chinese boxes only transcode if you set the output to 640x480.
>High-Z
This worked, I got an image! Thanks man. Unfortunately there is definitely something wrong with the unit... the image shakes and flicks on and off. It only does it on the composite inputs... I also hear a high pitched whine only when it's on these inputs... so there's got to be a separate circuit for these with something gone bad. Flyback transformer maybe? I don't really know much about this stuff.

Yeah, that's what they're starting to go for all right.

Also, if anyone sees a 20L5 go up on ebay in the next week from a company called "Hi-Tech Enterprises" in Florida, don't buy it. There's something wrong with the sync circuit (possibly needs recapping, but I don't know) and the tube is worn as shit

I bought it from them at a semi-reasonably offer of $400. They offered me a refund of $150 after I told them about the issues, but they wouldn't go any higher, so I just returned it. They may end up putting it back up for even lower, but be warned. The tube is VERY tired. Weak blacks, fuzzy edges, banding and ghosting like a motherfucker.

While messing around with the NES yesterday, I actually did notice a bit of a high whine that I don't believe had happened previously. Have you tried different consoles?

Think you could be a bit more specific about how it flickers? As in, is it the whole image? Jittery pixels? Does the monitor actually start to go back to its "Stand By" blue screen or what have you?

It can be done if your graphics card can send out a 240p or 480i signal. I don't know how you go about setting up custom modes on Windows or OSX, but on Linux you would add the following lines to xorg.conf:

Modeline "640x240_60" 12.312 640 662 719 784 240 244 247 262 -hsync -vsync

Modeline "640x480_60i" 12.336 640 662 720 784 480 488 494 525 interlace -hsync -vsync

You will also need something that can transcode RGB to something your TV can accept.

~100 feet of bubble wrap, and double boxed.
Also, the first box is also bubble wrapped

I'm not really joking either.

I've heard good things about having it taken somewhere to have it encased in expanding foam, but whether they'd actually be willing to do that is another question.

How large of a BVM is it?

>>3011106
Strange; Does it have an S-Video input as well? Does it behave the same way?

That honestly looks like a mixture of a sync problem my SNES was having with my Megaview at one point and a weird grounding+sync issue I was having with the second RGB input at one point.

If you don't mind me asking, which specific model is it? These are 20-30 year old monitors we're talking about, and with all the various PCBs inside, something starting to go sour wouldn't be too surprising..

This is a question for RGB/component aficionados:

How much do you think a 1-chip 03 NTSC SNES is worth? How much would you be willing to pay for one? I'm looking into a sale and I need a criteria to evaluate whether or not I should dish out the money. Also, how much would it cost me to get a good video signal out of it? Will it really look very good in a PVM in order to justify the effort and money? There's also a very cheap and easy component SNES mod that requires the oldest SNES model and it seems to yield great results, so I'm really torn between it.

I got mine for just short of 100 aus dollars from japan. Was easy to mod if you have half decent soldering skills. The general picture is streets ahead of standard and really tightens up the signal although I can still see some faint interference and the vert. line effect but If I was using a consumer tv I wouldn't see it. there is apparently a more complex mod to remove this as well although it requires building/buying a circuit board. Haven't tried it but I would guess the component mod you're talking about fundamentally wouldn't change the signal quality.

Pic is something I took of the jr. running RGB on a BVM-2010P

The component mod requires a very specific chip so it only works with there two models: SNS-CPU-GPM-01
SNS-CPU-GPM-02

The 1-Chip 03 SNES I have my eyes on is going for 15 dollars, but it has the "black screen of death" and sometimes it gives a red screen, however, it turns on. For the price, I figure it may be worth it to try fixing it, because otherwise it's almost mint: no yellowing, the PCB is impeccable and there's no sign of any damage on it. The thing is, I only have a standard consumer set, but where I live I can get a 14' PVM for about 80 dollars. Would you be able to tell me if there's a difference in the composite video quality of the 1 chip and the other models? Or is it only really noticeable with high grade signals (rgb or component)?

Sorry thought it was more clear

It lets me take the 480p linedoubled image with scanlines and the extron upscales it to 1200p with little additional lag.

The xrgb 3 could do the same but it would result in no scanlines and a bit more lag

The xrgb mini could upscale to 1080p but the scanlines look like crap at that res.

So tldr it lets me get take the 240p rgb signal and display it on an hdmi/dvi monitor/tv upscaled to just about any res with nearly perfect scanlines with little lag to boot

I posted a pic of the xrgb 3 in b0 mode with an slg on the fw900 in the last thread and the scanlines were too thin and not nearly dark enough to look authentic, with this setup I get something similar but it looks much better.

Every tube is different, even fresh from the factory. The most accurate setting is dependent on the characteristics of your particular set and the lighting conditions it is used in. You will at the very least need test patterns in order to properly calibrate a monitor, and ideally you would have a good colorimeter as well.

>>3017435
>How do you guys take pictures of your monitors?
Take a look at the settings and see if you have any adjustments for white balance, shutter speed, and ISO. If you can't do that, then you might want to invest in a point and shoot. The better ones will let you adjust all of the afore mentioned settings in addition to f-stop and having optical zoom.

Discharge the tube every time - you'll hear a spark pop at very least the first time after it's had power, but do it a few times. Keep your other hand right away, like in your pocket, so that you can't act as a conductor, and wear rubber sole shoes and don't stand on metal. In short, DON'T provide a path for the current to jump through. Be aware that if the monitor is ancient, more charge can come out of the glass dielectric over time, so discharge every ten/fifteen minutes if you're still working on it. Also, if the tube is dusty and dirty, charge can leak out around the anode cap, so don't presume touching anything anywhere near the anode cup is safe until the tube is discharged.

I'm not sure the screwdriver method as seen on instructables is totally safe. I'd at least solder the wire to the screwdriver, and make sure my hand was nowhere near anything metal. I made a discharge lead from a screwdriver shaft in like 15 layers of heatshrink surmounted by 1/3" thick industrial rubber hose sheathing the whole thing and the first 4 inches of the lead.

Or use a high-voltage probe, but those are expensive.

The powersupply capacitors can also hold charge. Safest to use a light-bulb discharger with those, so there's some load across them.

>> No.3018441

>>3018438
Next, you'd do better diagnosing any problems with the tube first, rather than just thinking a cap kit will fix it. Pore over the chassis and neckboard - any obvious problems? Blown caps, rust, broken traces? Clean everything with isopropyl, and reconnect any broken traces with heavy, well-insulated wire. Cooked resistors are a problem, especially is surrounded by burnt patches, as that means there's a short maybe that lead to them blowing. After that, if all looks good, try turning it on, note what happens in detail and ask around about it, or even quicker use google.

Do you have a 15kHz source to test it with? If not, get one first, remembering that anything but an arcade board might need a video amp to show up. It probably won't be that bad, and you can turn the brightness and gain up and at least see something. Work out where those controls are on the boards, and how you're going to get to them safely while things are running. The focus pot may need adjusting, it's on the HV flyback that has the anode lead coming out and heading for the tube.

That might mean the bias/brightness is too high, or that the "screen" pot is on the flyback.

It's a technical measurement, not an internet joke.
TVL refers to the maximum number of vertical lines visible before they squish together, in a 1:1 square covering the full height of the display.

A television is expected to display 480i/576i, which would imply a TVL lower than those numbers would look soft, while something like 320x240p should be good enough vertically, but with limited headroom for horizontal resolutions. Presumably about 466 horizontal maximum (350TVL x 4/3 width), so not particularly sharp if you desire pixely graphics and lower than wider res consoles like the Playstation and Saturn.

Do you want a sharp display where you can make out all the pixels, or is a natural analog softness what you desire? It's your choice.

It's similar to the "screen door effect" that low-res LCDs have.
If each pixel on the screen is represented by a small number of dots, the pixels will not look like solid blocks. They will look like like a collection of subpixels. The bigger the CRT, or the closer you sit to it, the more TVL you will want.

I still think high TVL is overrated.

Also it takes a shit ton of time and experience to get it perfect, I need like 2-4 hours to adjust the convergence, purity and geometry.

Anyway, it's not nearly, nowhere near, as big as the jump from composite to S-Vid, but the difference is there. No, RGsB is RGB with sync sent on green. YPbPr is Component video, Y is sent along the green line and happens to have the sync information, but the color spaces used are completely different.

>480p+ though is RGsB exclusive on a vanilla console, that's out of the question.

Okay, you caught me off guard, will you please explain the difference? Maybe that's why YPbPr (as in interlaced component) looks bogus as hell on any TV I've tried. It's literally missing some pixel columns giving the screen a non-integer scaling look. I realize this is not a CRT question (didn't ever have a CRT with component inputs), but do you think that different color space has to do with how the screen on an interlaced PS1/PS2 looks worse with component than RGBs? While RGsB is alright?

RGB is RGB. as simple as that: Red, Green, and Blue.

YPbPr is Component Video; Y is Luma or the overall brightness of the picture. Hooking it up alone results in a black and white picture.
Pb and Pr are the difference between the original Red and original Blue signals and brightness; A bit of math against Y will give you the green information. It uses considerably less information to transmit than pure RGB(which has a lot of redundant information) and done well will give a picture of the exact same quality(under decent circumstances).

>as in interlaced component
YPbPr can be either interlaced or progressive.

I'm assuming you're talking about an LCD/flat panel? I know some LCDs outright refuse 240p sent over Component, so perhaps there are ones that don't like 480i either?

It's objectively worse than emulating. Emulating gives you higher quality scaling at lower latency, and lets you use BFI to simulate CRT flicker for higher motion quality. The only reason to use one would be for systems like the Saturn which don't emulate well, and only if you're using it as a line doubler for a 31kHz CRT, which avoids the latency and motion quality problems (but maybe you can get a cheaper line doubler).

Some of those older presentation PVM's came with speakers. Sometimes they go missing. Anon is right to warn you - make sure the speakers you use don't distort the picture and permanently magnetise the tube. Place them nearby while watching the closest parts of the screen carefully.

You can get shielded speakers, but without spending a packet, the shielding isn't total, so it's not automatically safe to use them next to a CRT.

As a tip, if you're hunting for speakers to buy, if your phone has a compass you can get a magnetic sensor app and use that to test the speakers. Anything under about 60microtesla should be fine to place next to the tube, but i'd still be careful.

Bullshit.
The actual color signals are 0.7Vpp (Volt peak to peak) and normally don't have a fixed voltage offset (except for VGA which defines 0V as black), the black level voltage here is defined by the voltage during blanking (the circuit that restores the voltage offset is referred as video clamp).
The sync tips are 0.3Vpp if available, means that RGB, R-Y, B-Y are 0.7Vpp and Y and Green with Sync are 1Vpp.

>What then if a signal that doesn't use 0 as black connects to a VGA display?
Then it's AC coupled with a 220µF capacitor before the 75 ohms termination in the display and doesn't have a fixed black voltage, it will actually vary with the brightness of the signal as the capacitor absorbs the DC/black offset.
A video clamp circuit is used which will restore the black level and such a circuit is used in every 15Khz TV/monitor for this purpose by using the voltage in or around the synctips as reference.
This whole effort actually has it's benefits, as the big capacitors could protect the device video output circuits and it may can filter very low frequencies such as the 50/60hz mains hum which might found it's way into the signal.

Those are 75ohm terminators. They terminate the line by matching the characteristic impedance, fooling it into thinking the line has no endpoint thus preventing signal reflection. This usually appears as slight ghosting to the right of the original image, on a per pixel basis. Video terminates at 75ohm, audio typically at 50ohm ( i think, though i don't know audio).

Most PVM's auto-terminate, but BVM's don't. For PVM's that do, you can add BNC adapters on the output side of the lines to remove the termination. Just don't plug anything into them.

The advantage of removing the termination is that it normally makes the signal brighter and more vibrant. Sometimes this helps older sets, and sometimes, for low formats like 240p, the ghosting isn't really visible. Depends on the source, the set, and the cables. When new, the sets would ahve looked nice and bright with the terminations in place.

I recently upgraded to a consumer grade Trinitron Wega 27 inch, and playing my NES through AV out, I noticed something I've never seen before.
My video output flickers slightly.
It only happens for certain backgrounds, and I haven't noticed it on sprites.
In particular, certain background tiles in Brinstar in Metroid flicker very subtly, and it's driving me up a wall. Particularly, the tiles in pic related, the rightmost tiles right above the extra black space - those dithered tiles.
Does this happen on anyone else's NES? Mine is relatively unmodded, it just has a Blinking Light Win and the NES 10 chip is disabled.
Is this my PPU or the AV format itself?

With the FD Trinitrons at least, the case of the CRT does in fact act as a cradle for the tube. Taking off the back of the case to get yourself a slight bit of wiggle room would be doable, but as the anon said, you then have to worry about snapping the neck.

If at all possible, try moving it without taking the case off.

>> No.3035808

>>3035772
Hmmm, given the neck sticks out the way it does, I'd guess that support is for it while it's in the case. It has to be there to stop the torsion against the plastic case from the front mounts, nothing more. The tube can't be *that* fragile or the air pressure outside would crush it. And if you took the naked tube and applied enough force to the body of it to snap the neck off, you'd be in trouble for a number of other reasons.

Hitting the neck itself is a problem no matter the other factors, of course.

>> No.3035814

hmm, it might also be there to protect the tube because it's larger, the case is larger, and anything coming lose inside might have a chance to gain momentum if the est was moved/dropped. Either way I doubt those structural supports are there to reinforce the tube itself.

It's not a matter of the tube actually being "*that* fragile" in and of itself as it is that it's not designed to support it's own weight outright; The case cradles it to prevent stress to be put on any one spot.
Taking off the back has no effect on this, and totally doable. Taking it off the base and off the chassis is another thing entirely and not something they should have to do anyway.

You are obviously single.

Tips from an old married guy:
>Only marry a girl that loves you way more than you love her.
>Choose your battles, happy wife: happy life.
>Little things mean a lot, even more so when done without being asked.
>Fuck whenever you can, especially after having kids when personal time is scarce.

That's it. That's all you need to know.

>"I have to walk on eggshells around my wife, so because you don't also think this, you are clearly single, hurr durr!"
You wish. My girlfriend just isn't a psycho who actually supports pretty much everything I do. I actually just realized I completely glossed over our 5-year anniversary together without saying a single thing to her, because I spent the weekend visiting some friends. She gave zero shits and just wanted me to be happy. Enjoy your ball and chain, gramps.

BigTV Narrow basement guy back.

I just moved my Trinitron 27fs120 into GF's basement to see how rough the move for my 36fs120 might be. The 27 went through with little trouble. Midmove I took a break to measure doorway with the TV in the most narrow point of the move.

I had a bit over 4.5inches of space in moving the 27incher left. 27incher's depth is 20.5 inches; 36incher's depth is 24.9 inches. So on paper it should fit...also thats what paying movers are for.

Marriage is really hard. The interpersonal dynamic and understanding your partners wants and needs is not as easy as it seems. Alot of girls dont have true "hobbies" so they may not get it.

All the woman may see is their husband pouring money into something that appears insignificant to them and time where the husband is spending away or separated from their wife.

Its not necessarily a psycho vs non psycho girl issue- its a communication & trust issue.

>>3036424
I agree with this. And really dont believe that this means "I have to walk on eggshells around my wife"...it just means treat your pretty much how you'd want her to treat you.

>>3036424
I dont know about "zero shits" but you should try to do something to make up for glossing over the anniversary. She may not have said anything but could possibly internalize it to avoid a fight. Doesn't have to be something huge, but bring her flowers and dinner from a place she likes. If a girl thinks shes being taken for granted she'll recognize and possibly use it as ammunition against you during a more difficult time in your relationship.

I suppose people just suck at communication, then. I like to include her in most of my stuff. She came with me to pick up my PVM last year. She comes retro game hunting with me at flea markets and stuff, and we go out for dinner afterward. There usually ends up being stuff she likes to look at, too. She doesn't play much, but she'll destroy me at a game of Tetris or Dr. Mario every now and again. And she loves Picross for some reason. Go fig. She's a PC gamer, so every now and again, she'll stick her nose in Borderlands or Dragon Age and Steam chat with her friends, and I'm okay with that. Alternatively, she's okay with me plunking down and playing Super Metroid for a few hours. She might leave me be, or come watch while she browses the web on her tablet. I really don't understand why having a hobby seems like such an insurmountable wall to some folks.

I feel like someone who can't understand your interests, or at the very least abide by them is someone who probably just doesn't love you, or doesn't understand what's important in a relationship. I guess there's a lot of that going around, though.

I suppose the old saying is true. Never make a pretty woman your wife...

Nah. We're getting off-topic here, but I screencapped the text from this morning. Turns out she actually forgot, too. Pic related.

Negative. In 5 years, the most serious argument we've had was because she plays video games for the story, and I think stories are part of the cancer killing modern games. She's not perfect, but I love her.

As much as I hate to be off topic in this thread...

Not having any sort of argument in 5 years is pretty bad. There's something going on and it won't come out until it's far too late. Post here when it does

How does a CRT adjust its line thickness for different resolutions? Even these 240p displays have only very thin black lines, what if you did 2048x1536 and then 640x480 on a high end Trinitron?

>> No.3037107

>>3037071
>adjust its line thickness
This is focus.
Which is set by a high voltage around 7kV (color CRTs) applied to the focus grid on the electron guns, changing this voltage changes the focus.
Also VGA monitors usually offer adjustment of this in the OSD settings, others (like TV sets) can be adjusted either at the neckboard or flyback transformer.
Oscilloscopes and old monitors may have a knob for that.

>> No.3037305

The quicker the beam scans, the thinner the lines because of less exposure over time per screen area.

So... the signal fed to the monitor leads to it self-adjusting the focus grid?

new thread where?

asking here just in case anyone manages to reply before thread dies

my university has some PVMs around, they don't use them anymore so I'm thinking of asking them to give/sell me one of those, if they do, I have these ideas:

>buy an RGB cable for my Wii, connect it to PVM and play emulators with it (wii has homebrew installed)
>buy a raspberry pi and an HDMI to RGB converter, connect it to PVM and play emulators with it (dunno how good/bad the video quality will be tho)

are any of these ideas worth trying? or are they both shit? if so, pls tell me why, I just wanna play SNES games on a PVM properly like pic related

>> No.3037772

>>3037652
The Wii idea is better. There are add-ons for the Pi that will get some 240p modes out, but they're not great modes.

A lot of the Wii emulators are pretty much flawless. SNES9X GX works well, will output native 240p. You could also use component, if the PVM's will accept it. Component cables are easy to find, and you won't need a breakout.

RGB might be slightly better, as it can also do component with the same cables, in case of video region problems with GC. But it's also going to be more screwing around, making or buying more gear. I made a cable that can do both from boot, just toggle a switch connecting pins 8 & 10.

ntsc wii can only do component

theres a region changer mod but im not sure how well it works

im not sure how well the pi can do 240p but im really interested if anyone else knows

Oh yer, i totally forgot the NTSC Wii won't do RGB on boot. The region changer works really well, but using component would probably be simpler.

I tried the Xbox 360 tonight and also the laptop just in case but both return the same Out of Range error.

I'm messaging the dude I bought it off to ask how he got HD content on the monitor, and if the SDI card is HD capable (pretty sure it would be).

If absolutely nothing can work, it still takes S-Vid and PS2 looks really nice on it, as does anything else S-Vid capable. But I feel I'm not getting anywhere near the best out of it that way.

Anyone know if the XBR100 comes with inputs on the back of the actual monitor? Some dude on Craigslist has an XBR model, but won't say which one and showed a pic of the back where there are inputs. The extra feature box isn't included.

Resolution is tied to frequency, including both signal and sync.
It obviously computes both the V and H frequencies into a value that is used correct the focus voltage to the currently displayed resolution.
