GB has goat puzzles

Some others that are hit-or-miss

Heiankyo Alien
Faceball 2000

What mostly annoys me are the answers, which are mostly mainstream fucking shit. Pretty good shit and I too can recommend them. But I really don't think the guy needs a thread to hear that Zelda, Mario and Castlevania are good games.

The big three "PAL exclusives":
Hammerin Harry: Ghost Building Company (the best looking title on the DMG)
Trip World
Trax

PAL license games:
Lucky Luke
The Smurfs
The Smurfs 3/The Smurfs Nightmare
Asterix & Obelix (actually one of the best looking GB titles)

Shooters:
Sagaia
ZAS
Mercenary Force
Penta Dragon
Star Hawk
Parodius
TwinBee
Burai Fight Deluxe
Dropzone
Punisher

misc

God Medicine
Knight Quest
Fortified Zone
Fortress of Fury 2
Operation C
Contra: The Alien Wars
Prehistorik Man
Spanky Quest
Hugo - Crazy Castle 2
Donkey Kong Land 3
Bonk games
Alien 3 (a horror game on the GB)
Pang
Daedalian Opus
Max (Star Saver 2)
Ninja Taro
Battle of Kingdom (Japan exclusive, but mostly in English)

These threads usually get the same recommendations, so I'll try to be more original and post whatever "hidden gems" I can think of.

>Gargoyle's Quest
It's a spin-off of Ghosts 'n Goblins. The game puts you in the role of a red arremer setting out to save the Ghoul Realm. You explore an overworld map interspersed with random battles and side-scrolling levels similar to Zelda II. The control / maneuvering during the action sequences feels vaguely similar to Mega Man.

>Nobunaga's Ambition
It's a grand strategy game, which is entirely menu-driven. You vie for control of all of Japan and have to prepare resources to mount attacks against other rulers. Combat sequences are tactical-style battles with grid-based movement.

>Bomberman
All 8 or 9 of them. There were quite a few for the GB. The gameplay is mostly identical from one sequel to another, but Pocket Bomberman and Bomberman Quest do something completely different. Bomberman GB3 is import only.

>Dragon Warrior I & II
The original NES classics with updated graphics (sort of) and rebalanced experience and gold drops, which makes grinding a lot quicker.

>Kirby's Block Ball, Kirby's Star Stacker
Both are criminally underrated spin-offs. Kirby's Block Ball is basically a Breakout clone, while Star Stacker is HAL's answer to Tetris.

>Tetris 2, Tetris Blast
Overlooked Tetris spin-offs. Tetris 2's gameplay is closer to the Flash mode found in Sega's Columns, where you line up three or more same-colored blocks to remove them from the screen. Tetris Blast is Tetris with bombs. (Also known as Bombliss, which is a whole other series in Japan)

>Dig Dug
It's not just a port of the arcade game, but includes a "New Dig Dug" mode where you have to gather keys to advance through each stage, which has new obstacles like rolling boulders and solid granite blocks. Kind of hit or miss, but I liked it.

>Ninja Boy
Basically a port of the NES game "Kung-Fu Heroes," but with a feudal Japanese theme. The game really isn't as enjoyable unless you can do co-op with a second player.

>Tamagotchi
If you were a fan of the virtual pet craze, this is a pretty accurate recreation for Game Boy. There was a whole series based on it, but the sequels never left Japan.

>Pac-Man: Special Color Edition
Dual-mode, so it's compatible with both DMG and Color. Includes the original Pac-Man and Pac-Attack, which is a Tetris clone. If you have access to a GBA, Pac-Man Collection is a far better investment.

>Ultima: Runes of Virtue
Really has nothing in common with the mainline Ultima series, aside from some characters. Runes of Virtue is an action RPG where you control a single character of your choice. The dungeons are littered with traps and puzzles akin to Zelda.

>Wizards & Warriors X: Fortress of Fear
Only if you're a die-hard fan of the series, as Fortress of Fear has some seriously regressive gameplay compared to its predecessors. The game is notoriously difficult, and may be right up your alley if you like Ghosts 'n Goblin's style of gameplay.

On the contrary, there are some complexities there with even what seems easy. Like people might not know that final fantasy adventure and final fantasy legend are not at all final fantasy and were just renamed for marketing purposes. Or that castlevania adventure 1 and castlevania legends are not nearly as good as belmont's revenge.

While I'm thinking of konami, OP should check out TMNT 3: Radical Rescue. It's SotN 4 years before the fact. Not exactly as grandiose but still pretty swell.

I like Columns, but it seemed to rely too much chance. You'd clear something, and then a totally unintentional x10 chain would happen. Tetris is entirely non-chancy (ignoring pieces dropped). Tetris Attack managed to strike a quality balance between the two; it's possible to get low chains like x3 or x4, but takes skill to get x12 and x?. However I wouldn't suggest TA on the GB, despite it being one of my favorite games ever. SNES is the way to go (or Pokemon Puzzle League for just the AI).

You play the AI a shit ton and learn how to skill chain (set up chains in real time). You will hit wall after wall thinking you won't be able to advance any further, but eventually you'll pick up on patterns and moves that net you chains, and you'll get better at preventing accidental clears.

My biggest tip is not to 'babysit' chains. What I mean by this is that if you set up a chain that requires you to precisely time a swap to connect, that prevents you from setting up the next chain.
