What retro Japanese style ARPGs (meaning basically that they use a controller and aren't mouse-based hack-and-slash games a la Diablo) can you recommend for me?

I've already played all the Seiken Densetsu games that are available in English (including SD3's English fanslation hack) and Secret of Evermore.

Beyond Oasis and Legend of Oasis are my two favorite retro ARPGs. Similar to the mana games with elemental spirits, but more puzzle oriented.

I also have always really liked Light Crusader, though it's even more of a puzzle game so may or may not be what you're looking for.

Brain Lord is pretty fun if you enjoy puzzles.

Also the Heaven and Earth trio are all this kind of game.

He is looking for action-RPGs and not action-adventures.

I can't find anything about Xanadu. Everything seems to be about some upcoming game called Tokyo Xanadu.

It's one of the earliest action RPGs and a lot better than the likes of Hydlide or Dragon Slayer

All versions except the new mode on the Saturn are in English.

Play Legend of Xanadu instead of Xanadu

There's also a Legend of Xanadu II, which is much easier to play with a guide (both games are still in Japanese)

Wow that's some poor graphic design.
